MN-06: Way-Back Machine

Do you remember where you were and what you were doing on September 20th? It was a Wednesday, much like any other. However, for those of us who keep track of and participate in politics, there were some events of note that day.
more inside
- Michele Bachmann, Republican candidate for Congress in Minnesota’s sixth district, received a donation of $1,000 from the campaign committee of Ken Calvert, Republican Congressman from California.
- Ken Calvert, Republican Congressman from California, is named one of America’s 20 most corrupt politicians by Citizens for Responsibility and Ethics in Washington.
Analysis of these facts shall be left to the reader, with tongue firmly planted in cheek.
Update: We now know that Ms. Bachmann believes God called her to serve in Congress, but did God also call her to accept donations from officials who have had run-ins with the law….over prostitution? In 1993 Congressman Calvert was stopped by police, and…well…have a look at the police report. The website on which that image lives is a bit loony, but coverage of the actual event involving Calvert is confirmed by the AP.
Other details of Calvert’s personal problems at that time are well-documented - his father had recently committed suicide and his marriage was coming to an end. But for Bachmann, whose commitment to morality and “traditional values” to accept contributions from someone who’s obviously had problems with those values in the past…this seems to be a recurring theme among Republican candidates these days.
