A reader in St. Paul’s Highland neighborhood, situated along a possible route for motorcades bearing dignitaries to the Republican National Convention next week, says he and his neighbors received notices from the city about code violations — mainly about landscaping — that had to be resolved by today. If they aren’t, residents will be charged $160/hour for city crews to perform the work.

Saint Paul sent out code violations to homeowners along Cretin Ave. in Highland Park last week that had to be fixed by today. They seemed to be simple landscaping issues: weeds on the boulevards where street chemicals and salt from winter killed the grass. The thing is, they had to be fixed by today, Aug. 25, or the city threatened to send out crews to do the work and charge homeowners $160 an hour. The homeowners who got them are upset that the city came down on them with threats like that. Usually, these notices give homeowners more time to fix things. This is, of course, Highland Park, and most homes and yards are very well maintained. So folks are thinking that this is the route Republican motorcades with McCain, Bush, Cheney, etc., will take and the city wants it to be perfect.
