Televangelist Pat Robertson, who holds sway with many conservative politicians, said on Wednesday that the earthquake that may have killed “more than 100,000″ in Haiti on Tuesday was the result of a pact he says the country made with the devil. The country’s problems would cease if they “turned to God,” he said. Over 90 percent of Haitians are Christian, and Catholicism is the state religion.
And you know Kristi, something happened a long time ago in Haiti and people might not want to talk about it. They were under the heel of the French, uh, you know, Napoleon the third and whatever. And they got together and swore a pact to the Devil. They said we will serve you if you’ll get us free from the French. True Story. And so the Devil said, “OK, it’s a deal.” And they kicked the French out. You know, the Haitians revolted and got themselves free. But ever since they have been cursed by one thing after the other, desperately poor. That island is — Hispaniola is one island. It’s cut down the middle. On one side is Haiti, on the other side is the Dominican Republic. Dominican Republic is prosperous, healthy, full of resorts, etc. Haiti is in desperate poverty. Same island. Uh, they need to have, and we need to pray for them, a great turning to God and out of this tragedy. I’m optimistic something good may come.
Among the politicians courting Robertson’s favor in recent weeks is Rep. Michele Bachmann. Bachmann recently did an extensive interview with Robertson’s CBN news about her faith and policies. She also did an interview with Robertson himself.
Bachmann and Rep. John Kline joined Robertson in a lawsuit challenging the validity of a Washington, D.C., ordinance to allow same-sex marriage.
And just last week, Robertson heaped praise on Bachmann:

Harry Reid who? For those wondering why Democrats didn’t get all worked up about Reid, it’s because there are plenty of real racists still running around. Conservatives, if yo don’t like being associated with racism, stop associating with racists.
Did Napoleon the third run things directly, or did whatever wield real authority? Though I guess if he wasn’t such an idiot, he wouldn’t be such a bigot.

And I suppose you people think that their pact with the devil has nothing to do with them being the poorest country in our hemisphere, either.
Voodoo and all that fun stuff is what all prosperous countries do, right?

Of course Pat Robertson knows all about that pact — he was one of the original signers. Indeed, perhaps the most important one.

Of course I would try to make my story sound convincing by talking about some historical figure, but the moment I mention another imaginary being, well, that’s just more proof I’m off my rocker.”
That’s what I heard, anyway. If he can fabricate pacts with the devil, then I should damn well be able to fabricate words out of his mouth.

Hope he doesn’t get any disease that kills him, cause we’ll wonder if he made a pact with the devil, and God is destroying him. Such words that come out of his mouth! The God I know is a loving and caring God! My soon to be adopted nephew is there and I know God would not want to destroy him because of something that happened almost 200 years ago!

Pat, you’re a heretic.
In this era of grace, God does not mete out judgment, Old-Testament-Wrath-like. If God punished people for their sin in this way, which one of us would be spared? God took out His judgment and wrath on sin on Christ, when He was crucified on the cross, and bore a penalty we would could not endure, and pay a penalty we could not pay for ourselves. Get in touch with the grace of God in Christ, Pat….
His ignorance of scripture is almost as appalling and coldness toward the suffering of the quake victims.
And for those of you who want to use his pathetic take on Haiti to paint others with the brush, whether Michelle Bachmann or any other person of faith, you would do well to get in touch yourselves with the grace of God in Christ.

I would love to have this pimp{Robertson} sit down and explain to survivors of Nazi Germany, or Stalins and Lennin’s Russia why didn’t their friends and family make a deal with the devil, since it is estimated that over 30 Million people were killed by these murders. I love the irony in life. These religious zealots, and corporate CEO’s hate socialism, but yet they are the biggest socialist on the plannet..Need a car? take the money from the basket, need a house take the money from the basket, need health-care? take the money from the basket..CEO’s corporate jets, houses, Countryclub memberships,Boats, Drivers, Meals..your running out of answers and when it all hits the fan, your gonna want to live in Haiti!

What shocks me is how Pat seems to equate the prosperity of the Dominican Republic and their “resorts”, etc. with godliness. He says that Haiti is so poor, and it is because of the devil. Isn’t God a great supporter of the poor? Why would those who have vacation resorts, and a lot of money be more godly than those who have nothing? Pat has never had any respect in my eyes, and if I had anything to say about it he wouldn’t have any respect in God’s eyes either. But that’s just me. SHame on you Pat Robertson. Shame, shame shame.

Why does God kill innocent babies and children like this? I thought God was pro-life, at least that is what the fundamentalists say…………..Since God is all powerful, couldn’t he pick out the guilty from the innocent instead of killing them all wholesale? But he doesn’t, does he……..because he apparently is so full of love and so righteous he just kills anyone. Sounds like a temper problem to me. Or, maybe, God doesn’t do this stuff? Maybe it just happens due to the physics of this planet?

Hey, I.B.Wright, have you ever actually taken the time to READ a little history? You know, the REAL stuff? I know this doesn’t coincide with your tiny little world, but Haiti is a Christian country. When the Spanish invaded, they killed off the native population and brought in African slaves. Catholicism was forced on everyone and it is to this day a predominantly Christian nation. You are as big an idiot as Robertson. This whole “pact with the devil” thing has been proven as a LEGEND. “True story” my arse.

I went to Haiti on a missions trip in 2003. Yes, many profess to be Christians, but they also still visit the local witch doctor. Believe whatever you want to believe. No where else in this entire hemisphere is as poor as that country. I feel terrible about what they go through, generation after generation, and I have actually been there and given out food and supplies and loved on babies in orphanages. I believe in God’s love, and I have shown that love. God has called His people not just to pray, but to act. Personal beliefs aside about the why’s and how’s, we need to band together and help these people who most certainly have no way of helping themselves.

Below is the statement from Robertson’s web site. I do know that the portion about his “Operation Blessing” outreach sending aid to Haiti is accurate so perhaps his poor choice of words is not indicative of the bigoted fool that the media is playing him to be.
CBN.com – VIRGINIA BEACH, Va., January 13, 2010 –On today’s The 700 Club, during a segment about the devastation, suffering and humanitarian effort that is needed in Haiti, Dr. Robertson also spoke about Haiti’s history. His comments were based on the widely-discussed 1791 slave rebellion led by Boukman Dutty at Bois Caiman, where the slaves allegedly made a famous pact with the devil in exchange for victory over the French. This history, combined with the horrible state of the country, has led countless scholars and religious figures over the centuries to believe the country is cursed. Dr. Robertson never stated that the earthquake was God’s wrath. If you watch the entire video segment, Dr. Robertson’s compassion for the people of Haiti is clear. He called for prayer for them. His humanitarian arm has been working to help thousands of people in Haiti over the last year, and they are currently launching a major relief and recovery effort to help the victims of this disaster. They have sent a shipment of millions of dollars worth of medications that is now in Haiti, and their disaster team leaders are expected to arrive tomorrow and begin operations to ease the suffering.

Mr. Roslan,
They were hit by an earthquake. Robertson was talking about them because they were hit by an earthquake. This is his quote:
“But ever since they have been cursed by one thing after the other, desperately poor. ”
So they have been cursed by one thing after another, but the earthquake was not part of “one thing after another”.
Do you lie for Christ? Or do you think everyone is as stupid as your viewers?
Comment posted January 14, 2010 @ 1:05 pm
Just because something is widely discussed by scholars and religious figures does not necessarily mean that it is historically accurate. The ‘compassionate’ Televangelist Robertson chose to comment on a baseless piece of folklore at an extremely inappropriate time. Additionally, Televangelist Robertson chose to color his comments according to his own biases (see “And so the devil said, “OK, its a deal”). The bias is also apparent when he compares Haiti and the Dominican Republic. It is a reach to suggest that he is presenting the views of others. It is hard any sound minded person to believe that Televangelist Robertson feels any compassion despite his organization’s relief efforts. Compassion is a feeling, not an action. Robertson’s actions are merely a vehicle for good publicity.

Chris Roslan, Spokesman for CBN, seems to want to have it both ways.
Truth is, Rev. Robertson is mean-spirited judgmental guy who makes this stuff up in his head about pacts with the devil.
What God of love would kill and injure all those innocents because of something that happened a couple of centuries ago? That Roonberts might actually believe that is really pathetic.
But then again, he called for assassinating Chavez of Venezuela too.

the kind of ‘Christian’ Pat Robertson is from Wikipedia,
“According to a 2 June 1999, article in The Virginian-Pilot,[18] Robertson had extensive business dealings with Liberian president Charles Taylor. According to the article, Taylor gave Robertson the rights to mine for diamonds in Liberia’s mineral-rich countryside. According to two Operation Blessing pilots who reported this incident to the state of Virginia for investigation in 1994, Robertson used his Operation Blessing planes to haul diamond-mining equipment to Robertson’s mines in Liberia, despite the fact that Robertson was telling his 700 Club viewers that the planes were sending relief supplies to the victims of the genocide in Rwanda. In response to Taylor’s alleged crimes against humanity the United States Congress passed a bill In November 2003 that offered two million dollars for his capture. Robertson accused President Bush of “undermining a Christian, Baptist president to bring in Muslim rebels to take over the country.” At the time Taylor was harboring Al Qaeda operatives who were funding their operations through the illegal diamond trade.[19]”
Really stellar ‘association’ ya got there Congresswoman Bachmann and Congressman Kline and the GOP and MN IR party continues to blame the ‘voter’ for it’s weak showing at the polls.

People like him make me frustrated to call myself a Christian. I dislike the fact that he said this on television. So many people look up to him and he gave false information. God understands that no one is perfect we sin but he never turns his back on us. I am proud to be Haitian and he is false about voodoo pact unless he was actual there. In fact the primary religion is Catholicism. Yes there are people who worship voodoo but it’s like there some people who practice evil dark spirits in America. Does that mean we deserve to be punish. I see this earthquake as a blessing. A blessing where our country can come together just like 9/11 brought the United states together. Every tragic comes with a realm of hope. Why did this man ruin this for us. Maybe it would be okay if people actually found out if there love ones where okay. But honestly, I don’t think it would ever be okay for him to say that. He is not God and unless God told him this is the reason why he did that I suggest him to stop and think before he thinks.

Here’s why I fear religious conservatives…Christian, Jewish or Muslim.
They are not living on earth among the rest of society. They live with their heads in the clouds.
Like the Taliban and extremists Muslims they believe God speaks through them and for them.
They see themselves as right..and everyone else as wrong.
To blame the Haitians for the earthquake by accusing them of having made a pact with the devil is like attempting to blaming Americans for 9/11 or for Katrina.
Did God curse the Bush administration by causing the economic meltdown. Did he punish Republicans by handing them the worst economic recession on record during their watch.
Is God blessing Obama by bringing and end to the recession during his term?
Religious folks really need to have a serious talk with their therapist.

I read your post and I wouldn’t give nickel one to ‘Operation Blessing’ … first people need to be honest with how Robertson funds his lavish lifestyle and I am sure that some money will go to Haiti after PTL, 700 Club and CBN take their cut(s) next take a look at my previous post and see how he has a KNOWN history of utilizing supposed relief/aid logistics to benefit himself financially. For Robertson to ever cast an aspersion of ‘corruption’ or judgement upon anyone or any other people is manipulative hypocrisy at it’s finest.
Of course the CBN ’spokesperson’ is going to deny and claim his comments were out of context it’s not the first time he’s done something like this and by the way let us not forget that Tammy Faye and Jim Bakker came to light courtesy of Pat Robertson and CBN.

There is an historical precedent for Robertson’s statement. While I think it was wrong of him to tie a Vodou slave revolt 200 years ago to an earthquake today, he did indicate an intent to help through more than just prayer. One of the problems is that today’s secular environment condemns religious and spiritual connections out of hand, yet the foundation of America is religious not secular.

CHARLOTTE (AP) — A religious broadcaster is building a $4 million home in a gated, lakefront community in western South Carolina at the same time that the ministry has cut jobs and reset thermostats to save money in its new headquarters. Inspiration Networks’ CEO David Cerullo is building the 9,000-square-foot home on a lot that overlooks Lake Keowee, The Charlotte Observer reported Monday.
Inspiration Networks has drawn scrutiny for up to $26 million in incentives it won from South Carolina to move from Charlotte to Indian Land, S.C., in Lancaster County. The network’s revenues are expected to approach $100 million, largely donations from people who are told God favors those who donate. Cerullo has said 80 cents of each donated dollar is spent to spread the Gospel.
Life is SWEET!
In addition to laying off workers, the newspaper reported, the ministry froze wages and stopped making contributions to 401(k) retirement accounts. The thermostat on the network’s new building was cut to 65 degree during the winter.
A network spokesman did not respond to calls and e-mails requesting comment on the house. Cerullo defended his $1.5 million in compensation in a March interview and said he rejected recommendations that he be paid more.
“If they’ve got these kinds of assets, does the state really need to offer … tax breaks?” asked Don Weaver, president of the S.C. Association of Taxpayers. Employees told the newspaper the ministry began laying off some workers late last year. Sen. Charles Grassley, R-Iowa, is investigating the finances of six other televangelists and told the newspaper that leaders of religious nonprofits should be careful not to use viewers’ donations to adopt extravagant lifestyles. IRS rules bar nonprofits from paying “unreasonable compensation” to officials.
What was that about a fool and his money……….?

When I was growing up, I was taught to ask myself 3 questions about whatever I said:
Is it true?
Is it kind?
Is it helpful?
At a time when a country has experienced such devastation, it would have been far more beneficial if Pat Robertson had asked himself those three questions. Or he could have referred to Philippians 4:8:
“Whatever is true, whatever is honorable, whatever is just, whatever is pure, whatever is pleasing, whatever is commendable, if there is any excellence and if there is anything worthy of praise, think about these things.”
Or perhaps that was too obscure for him. How about “Love your neighbor as yourself.”!
I’m still wondering where he found the passage, “Kick your neighbor while they’re down.”

I don’t know if God sent the earthquake to punish Haitians for their unbelief. I do know God is loving but also just and jealous of our attention. God lists the blessings if you follow him and the curses if you don’t in the Bible. He says it is not a mystery. Ever see a 30 year old sex junkie with aids, a cigarette smoker dying of lung cancer, an alchoholic dying of liver disease? I know bad things can happen to Christians too, however any look at the sociological journals at your local community college library confirms living a life commited to Christ greatly improves the quality and longevity of that life.
