bachmannpawlentyMinnesota’s two rising conservative stars announced big fundraising numbers for the last quarter of 2009. Gov. Tim Pawlenty’s Freedom First PAC pulled in $1,279,906, and Rep. Michele Bachmann hauled in $591,600, giving her more than $1 million cash on hand.

Pawlenty spent $395,831.17 during the quarter.

Bachmann’s campaign says she has raised $1,552,864 this cycle.

Her opponents, Dr. Maureen Reed and Sen. Tarryl Clark have raised less than half as much as Bachmann. Clark of St. Cloud raised $293,953 and Reed raised $207,000. Both have almost $390,000 cash on hand.

These two are part of the reason we need 100% public funding on campaigns. There is no reason they should even be allowed to go out and collect that kind of cash. Who knows what scoundrels like this would do with the money. They are both crooked enough that they probably skim off a percentage to line their pockets like the rest of the right wing nut jobs.

It’s too bad Bachmann’s and Pawlenty’s campaign money gravy train named Frank Vennes Jr. came to a screeching halt when Vennes’ assets were seized in the Tom Petters Ponzi scheme prosecutions. Their take would have been even higher.

As for what these candidates do with this money–in 2006 Bachmann “reimbursed” her husband for alleged mileage from campaign work to the tune of over $6230:

Nice work if you can get it.
