Poll: Majority of Minnesotans ‘embarrassed’ by Bachmann
Friday, February 12, 2010 at 6:00 am
A new survey of Minnesotans shows that a majority of residents — 56 percent — are embarrassed by Rep. Michele Bachmann. The release of the survey, commissioned by the Progressive Change Campaign Committee, Democracy for America and Credo Action, follows recent high-profile statements by Bachmann that she believes President Barack Obama wants to “annihilate” conservatives, that the U.S. faces a “curse” – and extinction — if it fails to support Israel, and that government must “wean” Americans off of social safety net programs like Medicare and Social Security.
The Bachmann survey results, released exclusively to the Minnesota Independent, measure responses to the question, “Do you think Congresswoman Michele Bachmann does Minnesota proud in Congress or embarrasses Minnesota?” While 56 percent of respondents statewide said they were embarrassed by Bachmann, 29 percent answered that they were “proud” of the Sixth Congressional District Republican, and 15 percent were “not sure.”
Predictably, 87 percent of Democrats polled said they were embarrassed, while only 12 percent of Republicans agreed (58 pecent of Republican respondents said they were proud of Bachmann).
The survey of 600 Minnesotans gauged feedback based on gender (by four percentage points, more women favored Bachmann than men), race (55 percent of whites are embarrassed by the congresswoman, while 80 percent of people of other races held that sentiment) and congressional district.
Some surprises: While the Minneapolis-area district represented by Democratic Rep. Keith Ellison led the state in finding Bachmann an embarrassment, the relatively conservative District 8, the northern Minnesota area represented by Rep. James Oberstar, came in second, with 69 percent of respondents responding negatively to Bachmann. In Bachmann’s own district, only 39 percent found her embarrassing. However, a majority of surveyed independents — a population likely to tilt the scales in Bachmann’s November election against either DFL Sen. Tarryl Clark or Dr. Maureen Reed — responded negatively to Bachmann, with 62 percent answering that she was embarrassing.
The full survey, which will feature public opinions on Sens. Al Franken and Amy Klobuchar, health care reform and the public option, will be released next week.
Bachmann’s recent proclamations — which have generated sharp reactions from candidates hoping to unseat her, as well as a rebuttal by Bachmann, who decried what she characterizes as “political grandstanding” — haven’t affected the outcome of this survey: It was conducted by phone by Research 2000 on Jan. 31 and Feb. 1.

That is not true at all, look at who took the survey… one sided anyone? The media should find something better to do than slam Plain and Bachmann.

Bachmann wants to “wean” everyone else off of government programs while her family collects over $250K a year in government farm subsidies for not growing anything.
Embarrassing.

Why in the world didn’t they vote that backward religious extremist nutbar out a year ago? She barely made it then. Now she’s comfortable again and thinks she can get away with her insane rants about death panels, weaning people off of Social Security (that would go over well with Grandma) which is Republican extremist ideology. She’s seriously crazy. Our nation needs that woman like a hole in the head. Come on Minnesota wake up and oppose her now and dump her next election. Call her out on her lies and stupidity people.

I have long wondered if Minnesotans, generally a leve-headed breed, found her embarrassing. I live in Maine and have two women representing me in the Senate with whom I disagree, but of whom I am proud. I’d be embarrassed to be represented by an airhead, even in the unlikely case I agreed with her.
Comment posted February 12, 2010 @ 10:04 am
Bachman needs a little white padded cell, after the voters throw her out of office – the things that come out of this woman’s mouth are deranged and dangerous.
There are many intelligent, well-educated, serious quality women in the Republican party. Can we PLEASE see more of them being put forward as spokeswomen by party leaders, and less of the nutjobs like Palin, Bachman & Malkin? They are an embarrasment to all women in politics. Look at the role Hillary Clinton plays as Secretary of State? Whatever your party affiliation, you have to admit, it is difficult (and dangerous to national security) to imagine loose canons like Sarah Palin or Michelle Bachman in the role of US Secretary of State??? Yet, such a position should be possible for Republican women in politics.
It’s time the old goat men in the GOP leadership woke up. They thrust these women into the forefront of current GOP because they believe they’ll win extreme right evangelical and Tea Party activist votes and win back the WH. I’m not convinced.

While Michelle sticks her neck out and keeps getting challenged, very few of our Representative or Senators will state openly state their true beliefs, which get all of us in trouble. At least people in her District KNOW what she believes and feels. What you see is what you get, instead of a mealy-mouthed, constantly contradicting themselves, liberal Democrat, who still believe in ‘tooth fairies’.

I have lived in Minnesota all of my life. Now we’ve had our share of bad politicians in our great state. Certainly Jesse Ventura comes to mind. But never in my long life have I been so embarassed by a representative from my state. It’s not just that she is such an extremist, it is in addition to saying such crazy things. I have a bumper sticker on my car that states: “Are the people in the sixth district that crazy?” When I drive through the area from time to time some people have let me know what they think about my sticker in a rather direct fashion.
I like those folks in that district. Fairly conservative (most of the state leans slightly to the left)and hard working. I’ve talked to a few people up there (I’m from the Cities)and they are embarassed as well. I’m certain that she’ll be elected out this year, so we shouldn’t hear much from her anymore. I know that I’ll be supporting her opposition.

The only thing Minnesotans have to be embarrassed about is voting a dishonest clown like Alan Stuart “Al” Franken into office. I would much rather have Michelle Bachmann who stands up for the people, who is intelligent, speaks the truth and is not afraid of expressing her true values. Many of the people here who have posted are hateful and frankly I think are afraid of her just like they are of Sara Palin. Lighten up and cherish this diverse country we live in. And…I am a Minnesotan and proud to have Michelle represent our state!

People are embarrassed by Bachmann?? Puhleeeze, I’m more embarassed that our state elected Al “Im a satirist” Franken. He is the joke! The man only moved here to run for office, now he’s living in Wash. D.C. His previous political experience… ummmm he wrote for SNL…. He refuses to allow a senior senator to finish his comments because “I’m in charge”….Wait for the fireworks to start once the Nov election occurs and his party is no longer in control. Your nice warm Al will go off like a roman candle. Sorry but I don’t like my policitians to cram things down my throat….. I prefer to have a discussion about it, rather than name calling which seems to be the focus for Democrats. They never can reason or use facts, they just name call and leave it at that…Can’t wait for November!

Did anyone read what she said in it’s entirety? NO I doubt any of you did. Try reading what she said “all of it” and then make a decision. Good grief.. anyone can take a 5 second sound bite out of a discussion and make them look like a loony. She is not for stopping social security for those on it now. What she said is that we CANNOT continue to have social security in its present form. We need to find an alternative to what we have because it will be bankrupt in the very near future. How is the government going to fix it? How are WE the people going to fix it. But then again, it’s just the way of the Democrats, whine whine whine and give me more, take care of me from the cradle to the grave… who cares how much it costs.. just print more money..
Comment posted February 12, 2010 @ 11:20 am
Wake up, people! She’ll probably win again, because, as in the last two elections, an “independence” party candidate will file, and enough people who don’t want to vote for her will vote for that candidate, since given the option, they feel like that’s a happy compromise rather than voting for the Democrat. Even though you still end up with Bachmann!
The Dems are running elections like it’s the 20 years ago and have not woken up to how to run a 3-way race. Dems still act like it’s a 2-person race and ignore the 3rd party. That’s why Bachmann won (never got 50%), same with Pawlenty, Paulson, and it almost happened in the Senate race. We will keep losing these races until the party, the candidates and the activists wake up to this.

Embarrassment isn’t a strong enough word to describe it. As someone who is a descendant of Bachmanns of Minnesota, I’m especially mortified by her. As an American, I’m stunned and ashamed that someone who skewers the truth so blatantly and is so utterly ridiculous in every way is actually in our government. I can only wonder if those people who do say they like her know anything at all about the world around them and could even recognize the truth if it hit them in the head.

I work quite hard a a volunteer for the sixth district. The question from possible voters that I find hardest to answer is when the voter says, “I think the voting procedures in Minnesota are rigged”. I do not know how to answer that because of representatives like Michelle Bachman, and the gentleman from Anoka county that beat up his wife.
The system is so broken, it is utterly hopeless.

I believe the recent medical mystery in Minn. has at last been solved. Unusual forms and shapes seen in MRI’s of the head have been discovered to be little tiny ice cubes. Of course, hypothermia explains the whole shootinkaboodle! Therapy includes pulling one’s head out of their “snowbank” and doing math puzzles to help stimulate brain activity at the cellular level.

Michelle and that little old grouch Virginia Foxx should crawl into a hole and bring their hateful rantings with them. Embarrassing their constituents is the least of their offences. Their bigoted and hate filled speech on almost every subject is exactly why they need to be replaced. If, in fact, they do represent the feelings and beliefs of the people in their districts then the United States has bigger problems than embarrassment. I believe the Pledge of Allegiance ends with “…liberty and justice for ALL.” not just for white, christian conservatives. Just for the record I am white and a christian.

All Catholics who vote for her turn a blind eye to her religion too. The Lutheran Wisconsin Synod believes the Pope is the antichrist. I know because I used to be a member.

Michelle Bachman is a radical extremist. The whole world understands that except for a group of Republican men. I don’t know exactly how it happened but I suspect that religious repression of sexual feelings has something to do with the current testosterone driven chasing after Palin and Bachman. The Republican party who has never welcomed women is suddenly chasing these two skirts. Susan Eisenhower was surely right. Her grandfather wouldn’t recognize the Republican party of today. Ike had dignity. You might not have agreed with everything he said but you could still respect him. Who could respect Boehner? Or the ravings of Bachman or Palin. If you took the sex drive out of it, the Republicans who think Palin would be a good presidential candidate would drop far lower than the 11% who were for her in this week’s polling.

I lived in the 6th district (Bachmann’s) for 15 years. I did not vote for her the first time she ran for state office, but have ever since. Why? because she speaks her mind and she is some what of a rouge in her own party. She says things that can make even a conservative like cringe, but at least it out there for debate. Most politician talk only party line stuff. They think they owe the party more than the people they represent. For all of you that hate her so much there might be good news. There a rumor that after the 2010 census Minnesota will lose a seat. Some people think it will be the 6th district. If that happens don’t think you are done with her, She could morph I to a Liberals worse nightmare.
To Nancy who pines for Hubert. I grew up three miles from his home. I saw and heard him at a distance of ten feet. He would say any thing to win a vote. He was also was a puppet of Richard Daley of Chicago. I’d personally don’t see him as a saint or a hero. He was a career politician, something I think this country would be better off without. Neither Republican or Democrats have real answers. DUMP THEM ALL IN THE FALL!

I grew up in Bachmann’s district and even though it’s right near the Twin Cities, it is chock full of hillbillies, or rednecks if you prefer. Although when I went to school there *redneck* meant someone who refused to smoke pot. Normal there was having an unquestioning belief that the Twin Cities were dangerous and filled with prostitutes; being high school educated; being a single issue voter; and being unoffended by someone using the N word because everyone understood that there were N kinds of blacks and good blacks…they weren’t all the same. Ya know?

Max,
She is a congresswoman. She ‘represents’ the 6th Dist. of MN.
–
MN is an odd state, politically. The Twin Cities are mostly liberal, as is the majority of “out state” — however there is a ring around the Cities — suburbs and exurbs — where there are a lot of conservatives/1-2 issue voters. Bachmann’s district is such an area. I live in a similar area (but different district) and I see a lot of the same type of mentality in my neighbors.
This poll does not surprise me, though. Her dist. may be very conservative, but the majority of the state is not.

Gahnzo,
You should do a little more research on your junior senator, Al Franken. While Al Franken was born in NY, he was raised in Minn. He is a carpetbagger like Norm Coleman who grew up in NY and moved to Minn to get into politics. Franken is a member of the Minnesota Democratic-Farmer-Labor Party, which is affiliated with the Democratic Party. He’s also a Harvard grad. Satirist or not, the guy is smart. He’s also been actively involved in the USO for more than a decade. So you don’t like his politics but you would do well to know more about the man other than the “facts” brought to you by Faux News.

gahnzo: Why is it only wrong when a Democratic Senator enforces a fair rule in the Senate, to cut off a long winded Senator, when the very same thing has often been done by the Republicans, in fact, by John McCain, himself? The discussion was already in danger of going on for too long, and yes, Franken was in charge. When Republicans are and utilize this, I don’t see you criticizing them. Oh, no, it’s only when it’s our side. More of the old double standard thing that we see every day.

Obviously even a great Representative will policy positions that are the opposite of many of their constituents. How historians determine whether is successful and worthy of being defined as great is larged based on how they serviced their entire district, not merely those who share their policy positions. Rep. Bachmann not only distinguishes herself by not working on behalf of her districts’ citizens, but is also vigorously engaged in denying them even their equal liberty rights and our avoiding the two biggest looming challenges we face, climate change and the national debt – largely due to increasing health care costs.
I would hope this district will elect someone capable and focused on putting America and its citizens’ interests first rather than serving a political movement which has already demonstrated its incapability of both governing and taking on fundamental challenges we continue to procrastinate about.

While I think she’s a nut, I have some very rational friends who think highly of her, for some odd reason. Also, just because she’s used to be from Stillwater does not mean she is a carbon copy of every citizen here. Many do love her here but there is a strong minority (if there ever was one) who can’t stand her, me included. On the plus side, she does make me laugh quite a bit.

Perhaps Palin will choose her as her running mate. Now that is a ticket you can believe it.
Wow. I am a woman and long to see a woman president but these two are way way out there. I am hoping before my life ends (65), I can see a smart, world wise, and loving person assume the Commander in Chief job. She can be Dem or Rep. but she must be sane, and must know the issues and be able to converse on them with heads of state. She must be the president of both parties and must have respect for issues on all sides. Know any woman out there that fit the profile.I sure would like to see one.

Oh come on–we need her! Without Mrs. Bachmann we wouldn’t have the “Lightbulb Freedom Act” (really–she proposed this on the floor of the House because she loves our freedoms and apparently has zero respect for the sanctity of the job she’s supposed to be doing) or the ‘Dimbulb Congressperson Act.’ How would Minnesota’s gays fare without Mr. Bachmann’s ‘Pray away the Gay’ Mental Health Counseling and Homophobic Ministry Jamboree? What would the Bachmann’s do if their truly juvenile spying services (at public, open events) were no longer needed? I’m guessing the Dems and Independents who AREN’T embarrassed by her don’t actually know who she is. As for 56% of Republicans approving of her, well they will have to explain that for themselves come Judgment Day. It is inexplicable to rational, adult human beings. Political viewpoint aside, she is a loose cannon with an incredibly childish and petty grasp of the real world. She’s not an asset to either side and certainly not to the country. We have produced amazing politicians–both parties–in this state. Mrs. Bachmann’s ridiculous behavior tarnishes that history.

The right has used its Corporate power to take over all the important aspects of normal hardworking citizens by “manufacturing consent”, while the rest of us are working our tails off the rich amass wealth and spew slogans that use ‘words like freedom’. As these one issue voters what “freedom” means and you will get no answer, because they don’t get it. To me, the freedom they talk about is to have corporations exploit us by dictating policy and running our lives.
In protest to everything that is helpful, right wingers use their single issue stupidity to judge everything. For instance because of recent snow storms, global warming does not exist. Yet they rely on governmental systems to help them enrich themselves like Bachmann. Medicare and Social security are essential to everyone including these idiots, when the decry government involvement we should ask them to consider not enrolling in social security or participating or using any medicare services, maybe this would give them a clue.
Anyone on the right understand the phrase “knowledge is power”?
At this rate, in the hands of right wingers, this country will be deteriorate to the likes of Mexico within a few years.

A left wing organization produces a “survey” that 56% of people dislike a conservative. Wow, that is really shocking news!
As we move closer and closer to the old Soviet Union with our media becoming more and more like Obama cheerleaders, we are in danger of becoming a repressive dictatorship with Marxist destroy-the-wealth ideals.
And Minnesotans AREN’T embarrassed by Al Franken?

Socialism did in Mexico just like its doing in Venezuela. If was the LEFT wingers, not the right.
Social security and Medicare will bankrupt the country. These are socialist scams to attract voters to vote Democratic.
Why do you people hate personal freedom and liberties so much and bow down to “share the wealth” autocrats who want to steal your money, IRAs, etc “for the common good” which is usually just their friends?

This is news? No wonder Minnesotans had a foul mouthed wrestler and now a mentally ill comedian representing them. No doubt the author, Mr. Schmuckster is a socialist agitator who cannot attack Bachmann’s solid message so he is left to attack the messenger with boiler plate propaganda. I had to laugh out loud at the sources of the poll, the so called, “Progressive Change Campaign Committee”, “Democracy for America” and “Credo Action” who are no doubt Marxist front groups. They should all be alarmed and not embarrassed. America has awakened to non-democratic, socialist apparatchik moles posing as intellectuals. For too many years the ugly left has gone unchallenged but the information age and alternative media has unveiled the red menace in mass media and the people are taking back their republic. Bolsheviks beware, when your reign ends you will be no more than unemployable ideologues in the competitive real world of real issues and traditional mores. It can’t happen too soon. The might is in the right and we will have the last laugh putz.

Oh and im sorry Al Franken gave employees the right to sue corporations for sexual assault and assault and battery against fellow employees. I guess that doesn’t mean much to you since it doesn’t help you. And what about Bachmann’s 250k subsidies? I guess that’s okay since she held off the democratic hoard huh? Oh and your taxes are paying for that by the way.

Slamming the reporter and the group who commissioned the survey avoids the fact that the survey itself is statistically valid. A classic case of killing the messenger to avoid dealing with the fact that a large group of Minnesotans are embarrassed by Rep. Bachmann.
Regarding Mr. Franken vs. Ms. Bachman’s relative capability to govern: My benchmarking of the quality of their statements as they relate to what functional experts, e.g., economists, constitutional scholars, makes clear who is more qualified to serve in that one aspect. I’m confident any unbiased research into the same would yield the same outcome, they are not even close.
Ms. Bachmann has a particularly difficult time creating an honest framing of reality let alone being cognizant of both history and what functional experts understand. In fact its clear she currently couldn’t even pass a primary school science, civics, American History, or high school economics class. Lastly, Ms. Bachmann’s fealty to dishonesty can be easily validated as well. In fact, I have yet to see her speak even once for more than a couple of minutes where she didn’t lie.
Since I’m not a Minnesotan I do not know if Sen. Franken’s tenure to date has been successful, but it’s empirically clear that Ms. Bachmann is no way qualfied to be a professional in any field given her lack of honesty, integrity, ignorance, and her fierce opposition to functional excellence.

Zach Petitbone,
As was already established had you bothered reading the other posts, this is not a ‘left wing’ polling organization. For God sake Fox News uses them. It is this sort of knee-jerk “if they don’t see things my way, they must have a liberal bias because there’s no way I could be wrong” thinking that makes you guys such a joke. Stop denying facts because it suits your view of the world. Just because you really, really, really believe something doesn’t make it true. Time to face the real world like an adult instead of whining that it doesn’t conform to your liking.

I cautiously approached my elderly parents, ferocious right-wingers both of ‘em, and asked what they thought of Ms Bachmann. Mom said “I love her. As if no wife ever said that about her molesting husband or serial-killer son.
There is nothing kind or warm or wonderful about advocating destroying Social Security or Medicare without an improved replacement. People will die prematurely. More seniors will live shorter lives homeless, or without access to medicine.
But that’s okay, because all Real Americans know that government can’t do anything good, and anything resembling welfare is for lazy corporations, not lazy sinners. If something bad happens to someone, they just weren’t good enough for Jesus.

Maybe that majority of people surveyed (which is NOT the same as the majority of Minnesotans, much as you might want it to be so) claim to be embarrassed by Michelle Bachmann is because they’re embarrassed by their own discomfort when they’re faced with the truth, and someone like Michelle, who isn’t afraid to actually TELL the truth, just like it is. Would you liberal whiners kindly grow a spine and some semblance of a brain on top of it?
Comment posted February 23, 2010 @ 10:52 pm

She, and the vast majority of people who follow her closely but still somehow support her, would not know the truth if it punched her in the face.
And “liberal whiners” is usually used by people who won’t let facts confuse them.

The scariest thing about Michele Bachman is the hatred in her messages. If she is ‘telling it like it is’, why is she calling people really bad hate-filled names? Plus- she’s hasn’t gotten one fact to back her up- nothing of substance at all. She is like the rest of the GOP right now- panicky and pulling out all kinds of hats trying to add myths to what’s going on. Scare tactics.
Israel? Well- the thing is right now we have quite a few more issues to think about than Israel. I had no idea she was getting farm subsidies.. wow. It’s typical though.
She wouldn’t be so sensationalized if the media didnt’ allow it. I heard just a few days ago that Bachman and Palin (don’t EVEN get me started on Caribou Barbie) were charging $10k for headshot photos.. WTF!? Really?

Rep. Bachmann has often said things without thinking about the consequences of her words. This is no different. I think the 5th graders that I teach would be more responsible than Bachmann has been in the past few months when her mouth, which is quite large judging from the hugh yawn she took during the health reform debate, had a disconnect with her brain. It’s time that she considered serving on a less consequential board such as a small city council or township board.

I am sorry to read this. I did enjoy the pathetic number of people signed up to stop the repeal of health care. Why doesn’t Minnesota adopt and pay for its own health care. We in other parts of the country do not want it.
Re-elect Michele Bachmann. she is one of the few Minnesotans I have met, that actually has any political intelligence. Embarrassed. Well, if I voted for this Chicago Thug as President, and watched him make one speech, or decision, with his teleprompter unplugged, then the commentary of Michele Bachmann would be an embarrassment to me also. Most people do not like to have someone point out how their soft-headed decisions look so ignorant. Now if we want be embarrassed the rest of the country is embarrassed for you over your Senator Stewart Smalley, who has the intelligence somewhat rivaling a paramecium. She is one of the few in Minnesota, who really have a clue as to what is happening to you and me under this administration. Bachmann embarrasses the crap out of me as a MN resident. She’s nothing more than a button pushing, fear mongering woman who’s more concerned with staying in office than doing the right thing for her constituents. You only need to hear her talk once about the high levels of atmospheric CO2 (not to mention ocean acidification) and how “healthy and natural” it is for us (hint: YouTube). She’s a certified nut case to say what she says, not the least that she has NO credentials and NO expertise to even be discussing the science of it. But that’s the problem with the people that support her, they don’t need more than cheap words and empty promises to faithfully believe her half-truths and outright lies. Yes, she embarrasses me with her clear and evident ignorance.
