Sen. Betzold: Pawlenty diverted veterans funding to faith-based office

pawlenty-careeningSen. Don Betzold, DFL-Fridley, told City Pages’ Matt Snyders on Thursday that Gov. Tim Pawlenty has diverted funds from the “Support Our Troops” license plate program to his Governor’s Office of Faith-Based Initiatives, an office that works to connect religious organizations with state funds.

Betzold says that $30,000 from the license plate program was supposed to go to the Department of Military Affairs and the Department of Veterans Affairs, but instead paid for a position at the faith-based office which is part of the Pawlenty’s office. The funds, writes Snyders, “by law, were supposed to go to the Department of Military Affairs and the Department of Veterans Affairs.”

“The money helped pay for someone’s salary in the governor’s office who coordinates faith-based initiatives,” Betzold told Snyders on Thursday. “When I bought my license plate, I was thinking I was helping veterans and servicemen. I certainly didn’t think it was going to that.”

We already know that Pawlenty considers himself above the law. Just like his hero, President “signing statement”.

To be fair to Pawlenty, God told him to do that.

That is seriously messed up. Diverted? Call it theft, like it really is.

Oh no, you’re empty gesture of “support” for the children you happily sent off to die in a desert half way around the world didn’t pan out and absolve your two votes for Cheney/Bush. Boo. Hoo.

Tim,

This is God. Give the money back to the people who paid with their life blood for the freedoms you take advantage of. Trust me, Tim, I don’t want or need this cash. I got billions.

Sounds like T-Paw broke the law. Time to impeach.

Maybe Timmy the Tool can explain this one to the troops next time he flies over to the Middle East for a photo op with them. And if the funds are required “by law” to be used for veterans, as Betzold claims, then it appears the law has been broken by Pawlenty. Does anyone in the DFL have the balls to charge him?

I am sick to my stomach reading this. How can anyone who claims to be a Christian steal money from the Veterans?
Pawlenty’s claim to direct contact with God makes me think he’s got a couple loose screws. Minnesota will be “blessed” to be rid of him but let’s pray we don’t have to put up with him on a national scale. Another Bush….
thinks he is above the law of the U.S. and God.

[...] This was a story that didn’t make the big media circuit outside of Minnesota, and didn’t even play large there. After all, this was the week in which allegations about same-sex sexual groping by Eric Massa were extended. What are a little fraud and violation of the separation of church and state, compared to that? [...]

Pisses me off. Their rhetorical hypocrisy. Great example of how their kind of people and politics pull themselves up by their bootstraps, now (and yet again) republicans stealing from veterans.

But for the actions of my brethren in arms, your faith based groups wouldn’t be christians, but Islamists. Get your loyalties, priorities, and honesty squared away Governor. Until then, you are carrying on your business like a dirtbag.
