Barney Frank blasts Bachmann on Tea Party anti-gay slurs
Monday, March 22, 2010 at 8:00 am
On two days over the weekend, Tea Party Patriots hurled anti-gay epithets at Rep. Barney Frank, D-Mass., the openly gay chair of the House Financial Services Committee. The insults came as several black members of Congress had racial slurs shouted at them as they headed into the Capitol and one Tea Partier spit on Rep. Emanuel Cleaver, D-Mo. Frank said that Republicans should distance themselves from the Tea Party activists and he laid much of the blame with Rep. Michele Bachmann.
On Saturday, Frank told TPM:
I do think the leaders of the movement, and this was true of some of the Republicans last year, that they think they are benefiting from this rancor. I mean there are a couple who–you know, Michele Bachmann’s rhetoric is inflamatory as well as wholly baseless. And I think there are people there, a few that encourage it.
“If this was my cause, and I saw this angry group yelling and shouting and being so abusive to people, I would ask them to please stop it,” Frank added. “I think they do more harm than good.”
Among the epithets shouted at Frank were “faggot” and “Homo Communist,” and one protester told him to “go homo to Massachusetts.”
Frank told the Hill this weekend, “Any movement in which the intellectual leader is Michele Bachmann is obviously going to be problematic.”

The comments made by some of the “tea party patriots” tell me more about THEM than about the targets of those comments. It simply shows the level of ignorance (a sad lack of knowledge) in America. This health care reform bill may not be perfect or even the best possible outcome in 2010, but it does show that Americans do care about human rights. I, like most folks I know, believe that health care is a human right. Just like education. I wonder what some of the “tea party patriots” would think if they had to write a check each morning at the start of their kids school day. (Actually, they may think that would be fine. Education does not seem like a priority for this bunch. I would give you a million dollars for every college degree held by one of them, if I could! Actually, Make that an associate’s degree.)

Funny how there are so many very small (and pointless) articles this morning about these racist “tea party” attendees. I watched hours of coverage and heard none of these slurs….except from the dems saying it happened (they don’t ever lie, do they?). And who exactly took role call and determined everyone protesting was a tea party activist?? From what I saw there were Democrats, Republicans, independents and a variety of other intelligent individuals amassed to protest this unconstitutional “legislation”. Perhaps one should report on WHY thousands of Americans from all political arenas came together to demand that the government not pass this bill.

The Tea Bagger’s Conundrum: It’s not racist or homophobic or sexist if they hate everyone (who isn’t a straight white male) equally. I’m wondering when these people will start suggesting that the superior race is blonde hair and blue eyed….they don’t seem too far off at this point.

The Tea Party people are showing their true colors-racist, homophobic people who would rather see our country ripped to shreds than pay their fair share of taxes.

Although I do not live within Rep. Bachmann’s district, I will definitely be deeply involved in the effort to oust her this fall. All of us are entitled to our opinions and beliefs, but Ms. Bachmann’s actions — on the census and the irrational promotion of the fear mongering Tea Party — that’s she’s not worthy of the office she holds.

It’s unfortunate that it is believed that the Tea Party is a legitimate movement. There were more votes in favor of the bill last night than the number of people that showed up to the Tea Bag convention. These agitators have not offered one worthwhile solution of any kind. Fact: the Tea Party will have to realize America is going to move forward with or without them. They can spit and sneer and foam at the mouth all they want….no one is really listening to them. I’m in Michele Bachmann’s district and would like to thank her for keeping the seat warm for our upcoming Representative -Tarryl Clark.

I’m a 55 yr old woman born in Cincinnati, Ohio. I’m ashamed to be from Ohio thanks to Orange Boehner and that notjob in my hometown Cincy, Jean Schmidt. She’s a wack job just like this DISGRACEFUL wingnut Bachmann (and a long list of other nutjobs on the right).
Thanks to the Republican party and 8 yrs of Bush, I’m completely ashamed to be an American. Bush INTENTIONALLY lied us into a war with Cheney’s urging. It was an illegal war that killed over 4,000 Americans and approx 600,000 innocent Iraqis.
No wonder the world hates us, thinks we are fringe idiots.
When a party has something to hide and nothing to offer, all they can do is lie and spin, and that’s what the Republican party is all about these days. It’s a disgrace their behavior, all of them. Party of “no”.
Are cons aware that Fox News (the fake news channel) went to court and fought for the right to intentionally lie on air… and won ?
Fox, Limbaugh, right wing radio, Rove, etc, right wing fringe nuts in congress, they are DESTROYING this country.
BTW, for those who don’t know, the Tea Party from day 1 was financed and backed by the Republican machine. Sadly those people are too ignorant to know that. They are not their own entity. Dumbed down Americans brainwashed zombies following like puppets to the spin and bullsh’t.
Cons, whiners, Tea Partiers, they have NO IDEA what’s even in the bill. They don’t read it, they get their fake-info from Fox who tries to scare them into hating Dems and believing everything Fox/Republicans say.
We are pretty close to being destroyed as a nation by the dumbed down who follow the right wing spin machine.
The Republicans in office have always put party before country.
BTW, I’m not a Dem. Never have been. I’m an independent who voted for Nixon and Reagan (whom wasn’t as great a president as the myth that remains of him).
The reason I posted here is because I think the mass majority have never read ANY of the bill and have no idea what’s in it. Most also don’t know how to really find the info.
I have a few links I’ll share that you can skim over to see what this bill entails.
This is a summary of the bill and the timeline:

Summary of key details:

Immediate benefits:

Cost of INACTION:

Why we need reform:

Hope that helps some of you glance over what is actually involved with this bill.
BTW, 147 Republican ammendments were included in this bill. They were NOT shut out as they claim. From the day Obama took ofc (and NO I didn’t support him, I supported Hillary), the Republicans intended to be obstructionist. They had the intent to stop this president and this congress from accomplishing anything, no matter what, as long as they were in office. Again, for Republicans, it’s party power before country and its people.
One more thing I must add. Come on Minnesota! Michelle is a real dingbat, a real fringe nutjob dangerous disgraceful-to-women dingbat. GET RID OF HER!

Well, I think it’s nice that all the seriously crazy people have their own party now. It will be interesting to see who they crown as official Mad Hatter. I’m waiting with bated breath for the moment when they reach tha critical point; when they become so bloated and glutted with their own fear, hatred and loathing that their heads all explode simultaneously.
It’s almost amusing to watch interviews with them as they’re utterly incapable of iterating anything but the mindless gibberish they’ve been spoon-fed, and when asked to elaborate, can only regurgitate what they’ve heard on Fox un-News.
It would, perhaps, be more amusing if not for the sad fact that the level of ignorance displayed is a commentary on the abysmal lack of educational basics in this country. These are not people who are capable of intelligent, cogent, reasoned thought.
My mother used to say, “It’s useless to engage in a battle of wits with an unarmed opponent”. The teabaggers are a perfect illustration of her point.

Mind you, the geography of the district shows clear gerrymandering, however, I can’t find one neighbor or anyone who lives in her district that likes her or admits to voting for her. It’s mind-boggling that Ms. Bachman is as popular as she is. Family and friends from other parts of the country are constantly emailing about her bizarre behavior….it is truly embarrassing.

Saying that all tea partiers are “racist” and “homophobic” just because a couple of them are idiots and use slurs… well… that’s just ridiculous. A few loudmouths now define the movement?
Two can play that game. I might as well start calling all liberals “corrupt,” “sex addicts,” and “Chicago thugs” due to ACORN, Charlie Rangel’s bribes, William Jefferson down in Louisiana, Elliot Spitzer’s womanizing, and Rahm Emanuel calling Dems “retarded.”
Then we can all sit back and point fingers and not get anything accomplished.

For those unsure, Tarryl Clark, the woman in the ‘moneybomb’ ads you are probably seeing as you read the comments, is the person taking on Bachmann (her DFL endorsement is likely this weekend). If you want to get rid of Bachmann, consider a donation to Clark’s campaign. For those more fervent, give money and then come out to the endorsing convention this Saturday and offer to volunteer. I am sure Clark’s website has all the info you’ll need. Peace.

“Saying that all tea partiers are “racist” and “homophobic” just because a couple of them are idiots and use slurs… well… that’s just ridiculous. A few loudmouths now define the movement?”
Absolutely. Especially when the one of the head cheerleaders is an elected memeber of Congress. Congresswoman Michelle Bachmann is a very vocally acclaimed champion of the Tea Baggers, both self professed on her own part as well as by the common, ordinary everyday nut cases that subscribe to their rabid right wing ideology and who, in Pavlovian fashion, rally to her school bell calls to action. Her history of anti-gay, homophobic words and deeds is quite well established: e.g. when serving in the Minnesota legislature she was caught hiding behind bushes at the State Capitol spying on a gay rally; and when attending a community forum in 2005, to discuss a bill that she was sponsering to ban same sex marriage, she accused two individuals that she presumed to be lesbians of holding her hostage in a rest room. Want to read some more of her wacko:
As an elected representative to the United States Congress it is reasonable hold Michelle to a higher standard of conduct – one that does not include fear mongering, and out right, bold faced lying as part of a mondus operandi. Unfortunately Michelle has little, actually no, compunction as to what she will say or do in pursuit of her smarmy, sexist and racist agenda.
Two hopes: 1) that the voters of her district finally wake up after four years of her inanity and send her packing in the next election, or 2) if Minnesota loses a congressional seat as a result of the census count, that it be her seat that gets redistricted out of existence. How ironic would that be since Michelle has publicly exhorted the population not to cooperate with the census. Why? Because in Michelle’s paranoid, always a conspiracy mentality, the census data could be used to put any or all of us in internmnent camps just like was done with Japanese Americans in WWII.
Wow! Now I ask you how just how idiotic is she? I mean with her mindset wouldn’t it be a truly good thing if they used that census data to round up all the homosexuals and other minorities that she’s so terrified of (e.g. non-Christians, Blacks, Latinos Martians, et al) and locked them up in gulags somewhere?
PS: Commentator BJ. Good on you. Your observations and comments are spot on.

Aside from your abysmal ignorance about history (yes, the Nazis called their party “socialist” but they in fact were anti-leftist fascists), I have to say it takes a certain pus-brained gall to call a gay Jew a Nazi – when the Nazis killed both Jews and gays (as well as liberal leftists). Bachman gives me the shivers. The hysterical rhetoric of Hitler and Joe McCarthy come to mind when I listen to her. Just as they played on the dissatisfaction of people and appealed to their anger and frustration, Bachman does the same. Without her semi-hysterical speeches she has nothing to offer. Unfortunately, the tyranny of the weak is sometimes attractive to those who find themselves on the losing end of life.

DRW, your census point is well taken. It will be interesting to see how many folks in her district “lose” their census forms due to the aspersions cast upon the process by Ms. Bachmann, and how many decline because they secretly feel that losing a congressional seat might be the best way to get rid of Michelle. The district she represents is, well, a really weird shape (see link: http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/c/c5/MN06_109.png
) apparently the result–or better put the lack of result–of the last redistricting effort, which ended up being done in the courts (darn activist judges!). It was probably fairly homogenous in the political sense 10 years ago, however as exurban areas have become suburban, and suburban transitioned to urban, many portions of that district now reflect a different polictical position–I know that’s the case in my area. The western sections of the NW blob are probably still reliably conservative, however these are likely to be absorped elsewhere in redistricting. With 13 seats in play nationwide it’s a wait and see situation…but Michelle did herself no favor in stirring up census suspicion with the crowd that ‘doesn’t trust government’. Sorry to ramble folks.

So why is OK for Rep Frank to call members of the Tea Party movement “Tea Baggers”. Here’s the definition of a tea bagger “a man who inserts his scrotum and testicles into another person’s mouth”. Is it proper for a man from the House of Representatives to use these words? If he can use the word “tea bagger”, is it OK for me to use the word “fag” in connection with Rep Frank? Many on this site seem to think it is acceptable and even funny to use the words. How about the word “nig***s”? Can I it use that in relation to the Congressional Black Caucus? You do not use the word to describe the Tea Party Movements actions. You use “Tea Bagger” as a way to denigrate them. If you think it is acceptable, come on and defend it?

Dave – If you’re such a tough guy, why can’t you defend your use of “tea bagger”? The subject is very relevant to the article. Use of the word “fag” and “tea bagger” are equally disgusting and are meant to denigrate the person. If you label someone or some idea, the label must properly describe the person or idea and must conform to societies mores. Use of the word “fag” or “nig***” should never be used because they violate both. Use of “Tea bagger” does not accurately describe the members of the Tea Pary Movement and therefore should not be used in civil discourse. If you have to use insults to support your arguments, you’ve lost the discussion.
