Conservative blogger ambushes Franken, Franken pushes back

Jason Mattera caught Sen. Al Franken in one of his “ambush” interviews last week, and conservatives are all atwitter over Franken’s demanding that Mattera “shut up” after Mattera repeatedly interrupted him. Franken correctly told Mattera the line of questioning about the new health care reform law was false: The health care reform bill did not contain “$7 billion to fund jungle gyms.”

Mattera has been looking to make a name by conducting conservative ambush interviews akin to those of James O’Keefe. (He’s also known for a CPAC speech last month that was filled with homophobic and racial allusions).  He is associated with Andrew Breitbart and Young America’s Foundation, two institutions that supported the four conservative activists in New Orleans who tampered with a U.S. Sen. Mary Landrieu’s phone.

Media Matters fact-checked the recent video interview of Franken and found it to be very misleading. Here’s a transcript of the exchange and the relevant bill language:

Mattera falsely claims health care bill contained “$7 billion to fund jungle gyms”

Mattera: “Why is that the job of the federal government to create an army of monkey bars?” In a March 29 blog post on BigGovernment.com, Mattera posted a video in which he confronted Sen. Al Franken and asked him about the health care bill. From the video:

MATTERA: Which portions of the health care bill lower costs? Is it the provision giving $7 billion to fund jungle gyms or the provision mandating that employers provide time off for breastfeeding?

FRANKEN: Uh, Give me –

MATTERA: You should know.

FRANKEN: Give me the jungle gyms.

MATTERA: Right here, the jungle gyms –

FRANKEN: yeah

MATTERA: — is on 1184.

FRANKEN: Yeah, show it to me right now.

MATTERA: Okay, 1184, to provide physical activity opportunities to promote healthy lifestyles. So why is that the job of the federal government?

FRANKEN: Okay, now. Let me –

MATTERA: Why is that the job of the federal government –

FRAKEN: If you won’t let me answer –

MATTERA: — to create an army of monkey bars? Go ahead, answer it.

In fact, there is no provision “giving $7 billion to fund jungle gyms”

The provision Mattera himself reads refers to giving grants to “provide physical activity opportunities” in order to reduce chronic disease. After falsely claiming that the bill contains a provision “giving $7 billion to fund jungle gyms,” Mattera reads the provision he’s referring to, which contains no mentions of “jungle gyms.” In the “Creating Healthier Communities” portion of the Senate version of the bill, under the section “Community Transformation Grants,” entities receiving grants may use them toward activities such as “creating healthier school environments, including increasing healthy food options, physical activity opportunities, promotion of healthy lifestyle, emotional wellness, and prevention curricula, and activities to prevent chronic diseases.”

Haha i love Al Franken!

Mattera just sounds like one of those tiny little yippy dogs that freak when they’re out of their owners’ purses. Kinda cute, but really annoying.

I don’t care what they call it…if the Republi-thugs have to pay more in taxes to cover it, I am all for it.

Mattera’s video is as condescending as the cover of his book. Not to mention his tactics of surprise questioning an obviously pre-occupied Senator – on his way somewhere.

If he really wants an honest answer to his questions, then he should legitimately submit them to Franken in a more suitable context – not while walking toward a meeting or while he’s thinking of other matters.

Ultimately it’s a childish, amateurish attempt at having a “gotcha” moment in order to publicize his ridiculous book.

I recently saw a t-shirt online that said, “If you’re not part of the solution, you’re a Republican.” Sounds about right.

Under Bush, the Left unfortunately was behaving just as badly as the Right is now. As a moderate, I’d love to see less highlighting from both sides of atrocious behavior (such as interviews like this), and more spotlight given to the liberals and conservatives who are engaging in thoughtful, respectful debate.

So… this article says what this portion of the bill doesn’t do – but what does it do exactly? Because this Washington jargon makes very little sense to me. Can anyone tell me what this is actually going to do?

lol cute intro. he fancies himself some sort of james bond? what a fool. is anyone supposed to look at him being an annoying little mosquito and think ‘he sure told him!’? if i were al franken, i’d tell him to shut up and listen too. man i deal with people like that every day. that want to ask questions they don’t really care to have answered. if they wanted to listen, they’d shut up for a second. no, instead it’s about being self important, ESPECIALLY when you have no clue what you’re talking about.

If there really were SEIU goons out there, wouldn’t this be where they earned their keep?

Notice Jason’s use of “rubric” in the video — a favorite of the Breitbart chihuahuas.

I’m thinking this Mattera dude… his mom must have dropped him on his head—repeatedly—when he was a child.

Mattera is all fluff, no content. He’s so scared of being on the wrong side of history, all he can do is bluster and look for boogeymen where there are none. He is so scared of not being smart enough to contribute to our society, all he can do is try to railroad those who do contribute. Please, Mattera, go away. If you hate our country, and our political system so much, please just move far away.

Jacob – it provides a pool of grant money for state and local governments, community groups, non-profits, or Indian tribes to apply for in order to prevent chronic disease through preventative health activities. This part of the bill defines those activities in a number of ways – things like creating a healthier school environment (the jungle gym comment), increasing healthy food options in schools, creating wellness programs, etc. These groups would still have to create the programs, write the grants, and apply for this money. You’d think that Republicans would be for this since it isn’t above the Federal Government mandating anything, but is instead the Feds providing a pool of money city and state goverments and non profits can use to create a number of programs tailored to their specific missions.

why is mattera running a simon & schuster logo that says “a viacom company”?

simon & schuster hasn’t been a viacom company for about 4 or 5 years.

And so, why is that the job of the federal government? To confiscate money from everywhere and then hand it out to whoever is favored to “create healthier communities?” What part of the Constitution covers that?

Or is the guiding political philosophy of our day that government should confiscate money and use it to fund anything that sounds nice?

I can’t believe this guy called Franken “Senator Smalley.” That’s proof he was just trying to yank Franken’s chain.

Center for Disease Control says preventable chronic disease accounts for 80% of health care burden – it’s proven that some can be prevented with lifestyle management…heart disease, obesity, diabetes, inflammatory diseases, some cancers. That’s money well spent if it can make a dent in the prevention of chronic disease.

Twila Brase, registered lobbyist & president of Michele Bachmann’s fav Citizens Council on Health Care is another big liar. CCHC is funded by right-wing individuals & industry $’s – we know that – but Brase has been dropping the GOP anti-reform, anti-Obama repeal manifesto & “freedom revolution call-to-action” all over town & on medical sites, as though it was the legit opinion of a legit group & that bugs me. Groups like hers should be forced to reveal their real identities. Listen to this – Brase & Bachmann are interchangeable:

“Today marks the first day of a new revolution for freedom in America. This is historic day, not because of the bill that the U.S. House passed, but because of what will arise out of the American people as a result of passing this unconstitutional bill.

“U.S. House voted for a federal government takeover of health care (IT ISN’T)…to socialize medicine (SOCIALIZED MEDICINE IT AN’T). They have voted to put the federal government in charge of medical decisions and patient care. They have voted to empower government to deny medical care (GARBAGE – THAT’S WHAT HAPPENS NOW), penalize doctors…and establish intrusiveness bureaucracies.”

“…This is not the end of the battle over health care. This is just the end of the beginning. The American people will not stand by while President Obama tries to destroy America and its foundation of freedom.” (THIS IS GOP WORD-FOR-WORD)

Time to fess up, Twila, you’re nothing but a GOP shill.
