Pawlenty not popular with Southern Republicans

The Southern Republican Leadership Conference, held in New Orleans this weekend, conducted a straw poll to gauge support among Republican activists for various potential candidates for president in 2012. Gov. Tim Pawlenty’s name was among those polled, but didn’t rank very high on the list. He ranked 6th out of nine for activists’ first choice and 7th among activists’ second choice. Mitt Romney and Ron Paul were essentially tied for the top spot.

Nate Silver did a Borda count to determine the strength of support, and in that measure Pawlenty ranked 7th. Pawlenty did not attend the conference.

Here are the full results:

Initial Choice
(If the primary election for president were held today, for whom would you vote?)
Newt Gingrich 18% (321)
Mike Huckabee 4% (80)
Gary Johnson 1% (3)
Sarah Palin 18% (330)
Ron Paul 24% (438)
Tim Pawlenty 3% (54)
Mike Pence 3% (58)
Mitt Romney 24% (439)
Rick Santorum 2% (41)

Second Choice
(Who would be your second choice in the Republican Primary Election for president?)
Newt Gingrich 20% (339)
Mike Huckabee 11% (178)
Gary Johnson 6% (104)
Sarah Palin 20% (332)
Ron Paul 6% (98)
Tim Pawlenty 7% (114)
Mike Pence 8% (141)
Mitt Romney 14% (242)
Rick Santorum 7% (125)

Timmy is just not pandering enough. Perhaps he could give the Confederate battle flag won by the Minnesota Volunteers during the Civil War back to Virginia to help celebrate April as Confederate History month. That should do it for his complete shameful sucking up to the GOP.

Pawlenty barely beat out Rick “Man-on-Dog” Santorum and tied with Santorum for second choice. With a little luck, maybe the name “Pawlenty” will achieve the same level of notoriety that “Santorum” has when you Google it.

Ya gotta love it when Timmy gets beat by Ron Paul by almost a 10-1 margin after months of months of non-stop pandering combined with nearly complete ignorance of his current job. It almost gives me a dose of respect for Sarah Palin. At least she had the decency to quit collecting a check from Alaska when she went on the full-time hustle.
