St. Cloud Times: ‘Bachmann’s health care claims falter’

The St. Cloud Times is the latest in a string of major local and national media outlets that have taken issue with Rep. Michele Bachmann’s public statements about health care reform. Each of the nonpartisan groups the newspaper contacted said that Bachmann’s claim that abortions will rise 30 percent because of health reform is not supported by evidence. Other media in recent weeks to call attention to Bachmann’s “misstatements” include CBS News, WCCO, the Star Tribune, the Pioneer Press and Minnesota Public Radio.

Bachmann said recently that, “Now for the first time in the history of the United States, all Americans will be forced to have to pay for federal funding of abortion,” and “We do have and will have federal funding of abortion for the first time, which means we’ll have 30 percent more abortions than we’ve had in the past.”

The Times ran those statements past academic experts who said those statement have little grounding in reality.

Over the last three weeks, Bachmann has said the new health care act will unleash a wave of new federal funding for abortion and increase the number of abortions performed in the U.S. by 30 percent.

Yet contrary to Bachmann’s claims, the law doesn’t fundamentally change federal policy on abortion funding, says a group of nonpartisan health care policy experts surveyed by the Times.

And a Bachmann spokesman has backed off her prediction last month that the act will boost abortions in the U.S. by 30 percent.

I could state that the level of warts taken off peoples noses are going to rise by 40% because of the health bill and have the same Merritt for it as Michelle.

Facts are facts and the fact is that abortion actually rose during the 8 years of Bush. That teen pregnancy is highest in bible belt areas, and that divorce is the highest amongst the Christians. That Abortion is highest amongst the religious sect.

Its a Fact that having all options, and having Facts given to you that are true, gives you choices and thought time. Which actually reduces the needs for abortions.

Comprehensive Birth Control, and Education of comprehensive sex education at young ages has proven to be the best testiment for reducing unwanted pregnancies.

Facts are Facts. You can say, that allowing abortions will rise the needs for abortions like its a fad, but it doesn’t make it true.

You can say that teaching our children comprehensive birth control, and practices (and the word is comprehensive so the choice of not having sex is a choice and should be added and is added to any comprehensive education) actually brings to light the true meaning of what the outcomes of sex can bring. Not teaches them how to have sex and that having sex is ok.

Knowing the truth does not cause morality. One can teach the truth and have what ever sense of morality they want, and have it for what ever reason they want, they are not inconclusive of each other!

There is a Seinfeld episode where Jerry has made a bet with a lady cop and has to take a lie-detector test so he naturally goes to George for advice. George tells him that he can’t help. As Jerry is leaving George says, “Just remember, if you believe it, it’s not a lie.”

I’m pretty sure that this is how Michelle runs her life – it doesn’t matter what the facts or the truth are – it’s what she chooses to believe that’s important.

One would think that as a member of the House of Representatives, Bachmann would know that the Hyde Amendment has been on the books for more than 30 years, and there is no way that taxpayer dollars can be used to subsidize abortion. I think the important question is whether the voters in her district and Americans who support her are paying attention to the fact that she bends the truth on a regular basis.

Thanks, Jill, for noting that the number of abortions increased during the administration of GWB. I made it my business last year to look at data from the CDC and the Guttmacher Institute to verify that this claim is true.

Its easy to debunk people like Michelle. Her lies are not just bended truths, but right out, wrongs.

I hope to see as a fact that 30% of her followers will see the lies and make the right choice in not voting for her again. But that is a hope based on an opinion which is my choice!

Minnesota she makes your state stand out for all the wrong reasons. She is a nut job. I am from Nebraska and believe my our pretty mainstream senators have made some dumb comments and votes of their own, but this woman along with King of Iowa and just are way out there. You know we are pretty conservative in Nebraska but this woman would not get elected in Nebraska.I hope someone legitimate is elected for you guys, I love your state.
