Bachmann: Net neutrality is ‘censorship’

Rep. Michele Bachmann appeared on Sean Hannity’s show on Monday to defend herself from critiques lodged against her for her claim that President Obama and the Democrats are running a “gangster government.” She also took the opportunity to weigh in on net neutrality — she’s very much against it.

Bachmann dismissed claims by former President Bill Clinton, Rep. Betty McCollum and others that Republican and Tea Party rhetoric could incite violence. She said that when Democrats feel attacked, they cry “violence.”

“Well, one word that we’ve heard a lot just in this last week is the word “violence.” And that when people on the right are disagreeing with the Obama administration that we’re fomenting violence. Well, I think violence is when the Democrat-controlled base, whether it’s President Obama, Harry Reid or Speaker Pelosi — when they feel like their political position of power is being attacked, that’s what they equate violence with.”

And as CityPages pointed out, Bachmann seems to misunderstand the concept of net neutrality, calling it “censorship.”

“So whether they’re attacking conservative talk radio, or conservative TV or whether it’s Internet sites, I mean, let’s face it, what’s the Obama administration doing? They’re advocating net neutrality which is essentially censorship of the Internet. This is the Obama administration advocating censorship of the Internet. Why? They want to silence the voices that are opposing them. Despite the fact that they continue to have much of the mainstream media still providing cover for all of these dramatic efforts that the Obama administration is taking. So they’re very specifically and pointedly going after voices that they see are effectively telling the truth about what the Obama administration is trying to do.”

The altweekly notes that Obama has been pretty clear on net neutrality: “We’ve got to keep the Internet open,” he said on the issue in February.

Here’s video of Bachmann’s appearance on Hannity on Monday:

It shouldn’t be surprising she misstates the net neutrality issue. The industry has been deliberately doing the same thing by pretending net neutrality is an attempt to impose new regulations on something that works well as it is. The truth is net neutrality is what we have now, where customers buy access to the internet, and then visit what web site they want or upload and download as they need to. Advocates are trying to protect that from the ISP industry, especially Comcast. Comcast is trying to restrict connection speed according to which web sites have paid the ISP to allow those web sites to load more quickly, and they’re lying when they claim to be protecting the status quo.

They’re advocating net neutrality which is essentially censorship of the Internet.

Its like something out of Orwell. War is Peace. Freedom is Slavery. Ignorance is Strength. Non-censorship is Censorship.

If either of them said anything based in reality, I missed it completely.

Ann Coulter beat them to the civility=gag order argument by a couple of years. It is no less ridiculous now.

I’ve also heard the ‘net neutrality’=censorship argument from kool-aid drinkers before.

Net Neutrality prohibits bandwidth discrimination and protects competition, the smaller players and innovators on the internet, and all the businesses using the Internet as critical infrastructure. VoIP, Skype, online banking and shopping, net meetings, streaming anything.

Censorship can be looked at as a way to introduce inequality to access to ideas. In addition to the “1984″ quote above, Orwell pegged Bachmann’s point of view on equality when he wrote, “All animals are created equal, but some are more equal than others.” That is the sort of “non-censorship” which Bachmann wants, just like the sort of “equality” and “freedom” which she and Hannity advocate.

See, I told you, the first thing the Repugs will do when back in office is shut down their last source of facts (and non facts for that matter). Basically freedom of speech in all its good and bad. They want to control what you think.

Being from a gerrymandered district makes her untouchable in November. She can spew all manner of lies and extremist rhetoric.

Kansas has nothing on MN CD 6. Bachmann is laughing all the way to the bank.

Actually i don’t think she misunderstand Net Neutrality. The big push by conseratives is that business’s are naturally fair minded and if business standards support payng workers $0.05 an hour, then that’s the way it should be. It’s all about what’s fair and balanced from a Business Owner’s perspective. If you are a business owner you should be able to pick who you want as an employee (ie kick out all those pesky minorities, who want those special rights). It’s your god given right.

Why are you still quoting that wackjob? Okay, maybe she’s right up there with Jocelyn Wildenstein and Fred Phelps as far as sheer goofiness goes, but that doesn’t make her newsworthy.

It should be just as outrageous that other corporate whores in Congress will fight it, choosing corporate interests over “we the people”.

[...] His Tea Party mockery, the takeover of industries, the contortions of  Obamacare, the slow response to BP’s oil spill, the tens of thousands of new regulations, the aggressive deficit spending, the Fed’s printing sprees, bowing to and borrowing from anti-Americans — all are part of the blueprint.  Even his petulance, arrogance, constant golfing, and “let them eat cake” attitude are part of the plan.  Obama understands how grating such behavior is to any American who doesn’t worship strongmen.  His glaring at Netanyahu after throwing Israel under the bus, his browbeating the Supreme Court during the SOTU, and of course, his Mussolini-like poses with his chin touching the ceiling are all calculated to intimidate some into a cult of personality and alienate others.  And he has done so much more.
