Rep. Loon: GOP immigration poll language ‘regrettable, inappropriate’
Tuesday, April 27, 2010 at 1:19 pm
Rep. Jenifer Loon, the Republican House member representing District 42B, has responded to the Minnesota Independent’s questions about a poll on the SD42 GOP website that appeared to joke about Arizona’s controversial new immigration law. She called the wording of the question and its possible answers — “Si, señor!” and “No way, José!” — “regrettable” and “inappropriate.” Based on MnIndy’s query, she contacted the site administrator to ask that the poll be removed. As reported earlier, the wording was changed within the past 24 hours: Now the answers are written in straightforward language — presenting two “yes” options about support for immigration enforcement.
The text of Rep. Loon’s email:
Thank you for your inquiry, and I appreciate the opportunity to respond. After receiving your email, I went to the SD42 GOP website to review the content in question as I was not aware of the poll. I believe the wording of the question and response selections regarding Arizona’s new immigration law is regrettable, and inappropriate. While the website is not mine, and its content is not under my control, I contacted the website administrator and asked that it be removed. As a Republican elected official representing a portion of SD42, my photo and contact information appears on the website as a matter of constituent information, not an endorsement of all of the material presented.
Nick Espinosa of the Minnesota Immigrant Rights Action coalition (MIRAc) responded to the SD42 poll, “The continued stereotyping of Latino immigrants in the wake of the signing of SB1070, a bill which legalizes racial profiling, is both shocking and disgusting. Our communities have had enough of this kind of dehumanizing rhetoric.”
He says MIRAc and groups including SEIU Local 26, La Asamblea de Derechos Civiles, Mujeres en Liderazgo and the Worker’s Interfaith Network are planning a march at Minneapolis’ Martin Luther King Park on May 1 “to demand an end to discrimination and just immigration reform for all human beings.”
Update: The SD42 GOP was removed Tuesday evening.

My name is Gavin Sullivan–and as of 4/27/10–I’m the sole declared candidate seeking the Democratic-Farmer-Labor Party’s endorsement to oppose Rep. Jenifer Loon. Please consider linking to my posts.

Nah Jimmy, that nice lady just made sure that the embarrassing stupidity of a Republican webmaster was blunted. See what you don’t get is that to most Minnesotans that was insulting, demeaning and well just made Republicans look terrible. Americans prefer political groups to have some respect and level headiness… American citizens are just sort of fair that way and object to pointless ridicule that isn’t even funny to start.

The far right position of the republican party is regrettable and inappropriate.

The poll verbage was mildy amusing and only offensive if you choose to deem it so. Just more proof of mostly leftist PC nazis feigning indignation in pursuit of political advantage.

Troll Jimmy: And what is your strategy in calling those you disagree with “leftist PC nazis”? Political advantage? That’s what denigrating others to boost your political ideology seems like to me. (Really, those upset about the poll language are like Hitler’s crew who rounded up and murdered millions of Jews?)

Good question. When the nazi shingle was hung out they didn’t starting killing Jews immediately. Socialists are exemplified by stifling free speech, banning activities contrary to their beliefs, and generally using fear, intimidation, and psychological warfare to oppress rivals.
Only after they gain power and the poisonous fruit of their philosophy is ingested do the really ugly and violent acts become widespread. Hitler, Stalin, Mao, etc. We’ve seen it before, we’ll see it again.

Hmmm…sounds a lot like the moral majority (i.e. Repubs) to me.

I agree that the Republicans have at times been infested with socialism. But democrites are defined by it.

actually as a African American Democrat, I support the Arizona bill. people are dying over there, and I feel it is unconstitutional of any congressman who does not care about the American Citizens and the burden that illegals put on society and our quality of life. 57 % OF DEMOCRATS IN ARIZONA VOTED FOR THAT BILL. I may vote against the democrats who will not stand up for their fellow citizens on this one.
