Rep. Keith Ellison took to the podium at a May Day immigrants’ rights rally in Minneapolis’ Loring Park Saturday to call for “humane immigration reform,” the Star Tribune reports. Promising that “this year we will have comprehensive immigration reform that unites families,” he said, “We need to stop these fascist, racist laws.”

On Friday, Minneapolis Mayor R.T. Rybak urged city employees to consider canceling planned trips to Arizona, echoing a move made earlier by St. Paul Mayor Chris Coleman, who announced a city boycott of the state.

“This is a terrible law, and I do not want any public dollars to be spent there,” Rybak said. “Furthermore, I am deeply concerned that this terrible policy could put our city employees who might be traveling there on official business at risk of being unlawfully racially profiled, detained or harmed.”

It gives one a ray of hope knowing that Keith Ellison is not playing word games but speaking up directly and with boldness…saying the words without hesitation in a nation that too often remains silent in the face of injustice and a radical, creeping conservatism that threatens to destroy us from within. We are too often, our own worst enemy.

…and the Bachmans and the Pawlentys and the Palins…their warped ideas thrive and survive as we nurture them in our passive acceptance or by our failure to condemn their bigotry.

Excuse me Mr. Ellison, are you saying your city employees will be breaking the law when they travel? Becuase if you actually sit down and read the law it is quite clear that the only reason a person can be asked to provide proof of residency, (which has been a federal requirement since 1940), is if they are being detained for some other crime, AND if they give a reasonable suspicion that they are not legal. So which of your employees are being discrimated, the criminals? Get real and get a clue.
