Teresa Collett, the Republican-endorsed candidate running against Rep. Betty McCollum, has signed on to represent the state of Oklahoma in a battle over a new restrictive abortion ultrasound law. A native of Oklahoma, Collett currently teaches law at the University of St. Thomas.

Enacted when the legislature overturned a veto by Gov. Brad Henry, the new law would require doctors to conduct a vaginal ultrasound prior to an abortion, and patients would be required to view the ultrasound images.

“It is extremely disappointing that the Oklahoma legislature insists on passing a law that is so clearly unconstitutional and so detrimental to women in the state,” said Stephanie Toti, staff attorney in the U.S. Legal Program of the Center for Reproductive Rights, in a statement when the law passed in late April.

According to the Associated Press, Collett will be the attorney representing Oklahoma in district court.

She said the vaginal ultrasound would be just like any other medical information.

“It would be remarkable if a women would undergo a medical procedure and a doctor would not have an obligation to describe the procedure and the results of that procedure to the patient,” Collett said.

Collett is a staunch opponent of legalized abortion and has a long career of working to make all abortions illegal.

It would be remarkable if the government would stay out of my uterus, lady. Work on that, why don’t ya?

It may be good news that Collett is taking on this case. I saw her testify as a “marriage expert” in a MN legislative hearing about banning gay marriage. It would have been hard to find a less credible witness. Perhaps she will perform as poorly on this Oklahoma case – although in Oklahoma maybe that won’t matter.

It would be remarkable if you for one second thought that your uterus and the unique DNA of another living being inside of it are distinct.

How about radical mastectomy?
Hysterectomy?
Cardiac bypass surgery?
Gall bladder surgery?
Organ transplant?
Removing warts or tattoos?

How many other procedures would get called off if patients were terrorized with the minute, squeamish details of all medical procedures? How negatively would that affect the health of Americans?

Or will they focus on this one procedure and admit that this is all about bad politics rather than good medicine.
