Franken introduces bill to protect LGBT students from bullying
Thursday, May 20, 2010 at 1:48 pm
Sen. Al Franken introduced legislation on Thursday that would protect LGBT students from bullying in America’s public schools. The Student Non-Discrimination Act (SNDA) is in response to a series of incidents where students have been bullied to death — either murdered at the hands of their attackers or having committed suicide as a result of bullying.
“It’s time that we extend the protections of our nation’s civil right laws to lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender students across the country,” Franken said in a statement. “No student should be subjected to the ridicule and physical violence that LGBT students so often experience in school. It’s time we demanded equal treatment for all of our children under the law.”
Last month, Jaheem Herrera of DeKalb County was bullied so incessantly that at one point he physically collapsed in the classroom. He hung himself in his bedroom on April 16.
A year earlier, Carl Joseph Walker-Hoover of Massachusetts also hung himself after being taunted by classmates who said he was gay.
And in 2008, Lawrence King was murdered by one of his tormentors.
The Family Equality Council praised Franken’s bill, which would extend federal anti-bullying laws to sexual orientation and gender identity. Current law protects against bullying based on religion, race and ethnicity.
“We applaud Senator Franken for introducing this bill that would curb school bullying, which has absolutely no place in our schools,” said Jennifer Chrisler, executive director of the Family Equality Council. “The senator has shown real leadership on this issue. All children, including the two million children being raised by lesbian, gay, bisexual or transgender parents across the United States, must feel safe and have equal access to educational opportunities in school in order to learn.”
A companion to the bill has already been offered in the House and is sponsored by Reps. Keith Ellison, Betty McCollum and James Oberstar.

Now watch as the Republicans all but say gay kids deserve it… wonder how Dick Cheney stands on the issue.

Thank you to senator Franken for working to make the this country safer for those children who feel like they have no place in the world. He is doing a far better job than I would have thought when he was elected. I’m happy he proved me wrong and has my support.

Now if we could just get a law to protect Minnesota LGBT citizens from bullying at the hands of Governor Pawlenty.

So children with gender identification issues are protected by this legislation but no on else? Does that mean it’s OK to bully fat kids, ugly kids, poor kids, dumb kids, skinny kids, smart kids, and on and on? Singling out this special interest shows just how bought and paid for Al is.

This bill merely adds sexual orientation and gender identity to existing law. To answer Jimmy/Rudy/Raymond’s silly question, no. Bullying in any form is not acceptable.

Jimmy.. The way our kids live today is so much different then the way we lived when we were kids.. When I was a kid I was NEVER available because the technology wasn’t there to find me.. ~~ I miss those days~~ Today our kids are vulnerable by the same corporatist that want us to be enslaved for labor.. Jimmy !! I think you and I are thinking the same shyt when it comes to social hypocrisy..I think your value system and mine is not too different..Except for the fact I really hate Texas baggers..

But,
“Except for the fact I really hate Texas baggers..”
Yep, you’re a democrite.
I like you Marcus, but your value system is opposite of mine. I value liberty, freedom, honesty, hard work, and accomplishment. As a leftist you value thievery, extortion, deception, and pain.
>>> Bullying in any form is not acceptable
But bullying of gender compromised youth is MORE unacceptable than other types. Small brain legislation like Al’s doesn’t really help any kids, it just gives libs warm and fuzzies.

“gender compromised”?
No, no, no. As children grow up, they grapple with a multitude of issues as well as learn what is socially acceptable or not acceptable. Those kids with sexual orientation and/or gender identity issues are especially vulnerable given today’s heterosexist society. Kids (and adults, too) need to learn that bullying is NOT socially acceptable, and if it takes consequences to reinforce that message, so be it.
Besides, I don’t see Jimmy/Rudy/Raymond commenting on “bullying by race- i.e. black (religion- i.e. aethist) (ethnicity- i.e. Mexican) (ability- Down’s Syndrome) compromised is MORE unacceptable than other types.” Seems to me there’s some hypocrisy yet in them there bones …
Sheesh.

GadZooks!
Is today’s heterosexist society keeping these poor, confused kids from receiveing the mental health care they so desperately need? Shocking.
Well here you find one heterosexist that demands full access to psychiatric care for kids suffering with sexual orientation and/or gender identity issues….does Al’s bill address this issue?

Wow I agree with you Jimmy! I too value Liberty, Freedom, Hard Work and Honesty.. It’s too bad that we have to move to Europe in order to get it..

Existing law that this bill seeks to enhance does not address access to mental health services.
Like GadZooks, I firmly believe that effective quality mental health care should be available for anyone who needs it.
I am ambivalent about the phrase “psychiatric care” since sexual orientation and gender identity are morally neutral. As a society, we still are not at that point where questioning youth are allowed to discover themselves as they really are without having to deal with those in society who still do not understand or who hide their prejudices behind the Bible …
As evidence that our society is still heterosexist, LGBT youth are two-three times more likely to commit suicide compared to straight peers … Same sex couples still are not allowed to marry in most of the nation … and on and on …

I, too, agree with GadZooks that psychiatric care should be available to all. We could begin with those who are so desperately concerned with what others do in bed that they seem able to think of little else.

No, as a socialist you value the freedom to take the hard work of others.

Jimmy what you believe in is a distortion of freedom.. You believe in Corporate Anarchy and Social Destruction.. You drive on the roads, you drink the water and your turds are filtered from the Mississippi.. I don’t mind paying taxes if they make sure society is functional..

More correctly I believe in iS more like Individual Anarchy. That means property rights. Corporations and governments be damned; no one can take an individuals money nor can they force the individual to expend effort for the benefit of others.
You believe in institutionalized extortion, the basis of which is the threat of violence. Capitalism is devoid of violence, by definition.

don’t think anti-bullying restrictions ought be solely about sexual orientation, though that may be the biggest problem area
just being small can get you thumped by bigger students, and that’s not ok either

Actually, this does not need to be added. Otherwise, anti-gay bullying will need to be added and so on and so on.
No one should bully anyone, period.
With all of the economic strife, perhaps Frankin could work on something else.

No one should be afraid to go outside of their house whent they are gay and they don’t want to get killed…this bill should apply around the world not just in certain states
