Basel, O’Keefe plead guilty in Landrieu office caper

Minnesota native Joe Basel, along with conservative activist James O’Keefe and two others, pleaded guilty this morning in a New Orleans court to charges of entering federal property in January under false pretenses. O’Keefe, who’s best known for posing as a pimp in now infamous gotcha videos targeting ACORN, received the stiffest sentence for his role as leader of the group that used subterfuge to enter Democratic Sen. Mary Landrieu’s office. He received three years probation and must do 100 hours of community service and pay $1,500. The others — Basel, Stan Dai and Robert Flanagan — face two years probation, 75 hours of service and a $1,500 fine.
The four originally faced felony charges for their activity, but prosecutors later reduced the charges. As the AP reports:
The FBI has said O’Keefe used his cell phone to try to capture video of two others who posed as telephone repairmen and asked to see the phones at Landrieu’s office. The fourth allegedly waited outside in a car with a listening device.
O’Keefe has said the group was trying to investigate complaints that constituents calling Landrieu’s office couldn’t get through to criticize the Democrat’s support of a health care reform bill.
Basel is a 2008 graduate of the University of Minnesota – Morris, where he edited the conservative publication, The Counterweight.
Update: Here’s the FBI’s official release on the guilty pleas.

OK now what did the guy who guessed the Alaska Half-Governor’s email password get as a sentence… and what kind of sentence is handed out in that court for others who try to wiretap a sitting US Senator when your Daddy is NOT a Federal Prosecutor in the District?

A mere slap on the wrist. Now if they had been black, latino, or godforbid Middle Eastern they would be on their way to doing serious time.

They impaled ACORN so we know they are heroes. I’d like to know what mischief they were trying to uncover. Stay tuned, I guess.

My heroes don’t edit video to falsify what happened. My dad always said, if you have to fake something to make a point, maybe you don’t have much of a point.

Okeefe lied and tried to frame others with terrible crimes which they didnt commit. He used falisified video evidence (proven as such) to make it seem like people were talking about things which they were not. He tried to make a case that his targets were criminals, pedophiles, murderers etc…
But at the end of the day, he and his buddies are the only ones with a police record.
At the end of the day, it is only OKeefe, Basel, Dai and Falnnagan that stand as bona-fide, proven criminals. We can call them “convicts” now.
No matter what one thinks about them, James OKeefe, Joe Basel, and their pals are all convicted criminals. We can call them “convicts” now, because that is what they are… one cannot say the same for Katherine Conway Russel or Juan Carlos Vera.
And while it is now clear that Vera (hardly the mastermind of a “child prostitution ring” that O’keefe slandered him as) did the right thing in reporting OKeefe, (and that O”keefe edited down his statements into something they were not,) O’keefe, Basel, Dai and Flannagan have been charged with real crimes in a real court.
Joey Basel, thanks to the lead of your criminal buddy OKeefe, you are now a convicted crimnal, and that will be on your permanent record.

[...] For background purposes, it’s important to note that Andrew Breitbart is an attention-whore who is desperate to emulate his mentor, Matt Drudge, and this isn’t the first time he’s released misleading videotape “evidence” of African Americans behaving badly (or so he claims) in order to drive traffic to his various websites while augmenting his status as a player in the modern conservative movement. He previously engaged in the same chicanery when he released heavily edited and ultimately phony Jackass-style videos in which, he alleges, ACORN workers had given inappropriate advice to a (fake) pimp and a (fake) prostitute who were, among other things, seeking to engage in human trafficking. The videos turned out to be misleading at best, and the fake pimp character went on to plead guilty to charges of entering federal property under false pretense. [...]
