Sen. Marty hits back against NOM anti-gay marriage ad

Sen. John Marty, DFL-Roseville, criticized ads hitting metro area media outlets by the National Organization for Marriage, a group that opposes homosexuality. The ads use video clips of Marty speaking in committee hearings about his efforts to legalize same-sex marriage. Calling the ads “outrageous,” Marty told The UpTake that those behind NOM “are the ones that want to impose their will on others.”

“They are not about respecting families and marriage. They are out preventing other marriages,” he said. “They are the ones that want to impose their will on others. I don’t want to impose gay marriage on anybody. I want people to choose their own partners in life.”

He said that groups like NOM are on the wrong side of history. “They can’t stop loving couples from falling in love. If two women fall in love they can’t stop that,” he said. “They can’t stop them from making a lifelong commitment to each other. They can’t stop them from raising children.”

He added, “They only thing they can do is prevent them from getting the legal recognition that everybody else gets and discriminate against them. And that’s wrong.”

On Friday, WCCO evaluated the ads by NOM and found them to be mostly true, although the group exaggerated some claims and intentionally left out pertinent information, WCCO’s Pat Kessler said.

Here’s Marty’s response to the ads:

Yet another reason why John Marty should have been the DFL nominee for governor. Where’s the gutless wonder MAK on these ads?

I agree, George. I supported Sen. Marty for Governor as well, even though I knew the party wouldn’t likely support him. He was much too pure for those goons.

But I hope Matt Entenza makes a response… As much as I love MAK, I have to support Matt.

50% of marriages end in divorce. And yet the National Organization for “Marriage” doesn’t spend a DIME on preventing divorce. Instead they want to keep others from getting married.

Shouldn’t they be called the “National Organization AGAINST Marriage”? (NOAM)

good video that addresses what NOM is all about (using the Bible to discriminate): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0wdQ1LkRi0s

I’m glad to see that Marty has composed himself. He was quite distraught while T-Paw was correcting the children during the legislative session.

Somebody must have found his binky for him.

ZooksGad!

Is GadZooks nothing more than a troll who thinks they’re being clever using sarcasm, when all they’re doing is committing ad hominem fallacies? I think so!

Methinks gadzooks is a Freudian slip on the gadfly’s part … unlike a true gadfly, his observations are not necessarily in the service of truth.

These accents sleigh me. I thought the actors in the movie FARGO were mocking the native minnesota accent, but they weren’t. Regardless of accents, senator Marty is absolutely correct, and kudos to him for standing up the the religious money laundering NOM. They’re nothing more than a bunch of homophobic hounds of hell, bent on the private lives of the gays.

We’re about to annihilate proposition 8 too! Closing arguments will be held in San Francisco on June 16. We may resume our practice of marriage equality, in California, very soon.

Peace.

I find it fascinating that truth becomes secondary and emotion primary in all this discussions.
1. Sen. Marty’s equating gay “marriage” with interracial marriage is nonsense. My sexual preference is not the same thing as my genetic makeup.
2. Since before most of our forefathers or mothers came to this country, marriage in most cultures and societies has been by definition as a life-long, monogamous commitment between a man and a woman, in large part for procreation.
3. Why should the mess people make of marriage be a reason for redefining it? Just because people get divorced is a reason for us get rid of marriage? It is like saying that because people speed and have horrendous accidents, we should redefine and get rid of our traffic regulations.
I resent being considered “anti gay marriage” I am pro marriage, and if opposed to anything, I am opposed to those who by “force” want to redefine marriage, without letting the people make the decision!
