Pawlenty lays groundwork for 2012 on Daily Show

It may have started when he lost the mullet two years ago, but Gov. Tim Pawlenty’s appearances on “The Daily Show” Thursday night and Good Morning America Friday may mark the start of a bid to raise his national profile in advance of a 2012 presidential run.
Pawlenty would not say whether he would run for the 2012 nomination, but admitted he is considering it. “I might, but I might not. I don’t know,” he told host Jon Stewart of “The Daily Show.” That didn’t stop him from taking subtle jabs at his potential opponents. “Mostly to run nationally you have to be rich, famous, or you have to have some kind of schtick or novelty,” he said.
Pawlenty got the special extended interview treatment from Stewart, with the first eight minutes of the interview airing last night, and the full interview posted online. The total conversation lasted almost half an hour, and barring a few divergences in the third segment (a presidential candidate has probably never been caught saying “bong water” that many times) the interview largely lacked typical “Daily Show” humor, instead focusing on a Pawlenty’s governing philosophy.
His message throughout the interview was making government smaller but more effective. One area he mentioned when asked for examples was reforming higher education, suggesting new technological possibilities such as “iColleges.” The second part of the interview was primarily spent discussing the importance of entitlement reform.
Pawlenty is a two-term governor and was a finalist for John McCain’s vice-presidential pick in 2008, but his national profile is still relatively low. In a poll released Friday from The Des Moines Register, 53 percent of likely voters in Iowa’s Republican caucus were “unsure” about Pawlenty, far behind bigger name possibilities such as Sarah Palin or Newt Gingrich. Pawlenty’s media blitz over the past day should help raise that profile, laying groundwork for his spot as the “Sam’s Club” Republican candidate.
Though Pawlenty appears to be angling for a national audience, he didn’t completely abandon his Minnesota base, bringing up the Stanley Cup finals near the end of the interview.

Pawlenty’s problem is that he’s a tweener. Like a 6’7″ power forward.
The republicans don’t think he’s conservative enough and the democrats think he’s a right-wing nut.

How can he cry out about the debt in one breath and in the next moan the loss of the Bush Tax Cuts. He merely puts a friendly face on The Dick Army talking points. They don’t have to make sense they just have to be sincere. Like the Republican Saint Ronnie Regan, a smile a hearty handshake and a perfectly sincere, “aw shucks,” while his associates shove a dildo the size of Rhode Island up the middle class and gang rape Labor Unions. I don’t trust anyone who talks out of both sides of their mouth. They don’t look sincere they look scary like Barack Obama.

It’s was interesting that he could not answer the common sense observation that Clinton raised taxes and it did not stifle growth and it did reduce the deficit. He wants to govern based on the faith based idea that tax cuts will cure the deficit, which makes no common sense whatsoever, and is also contrary to history.

His pandering to the audience was nothing short of pathetic. “Hey, guys! Doesn’t it suck to have to get up at 9 am just so you can listen to some boring old professor in a classroom? Enroll at Pawlenty University, and for $199 you can download your class to your iPhone!”

That’s just nuts to suggest an iPad is going to replace classrooms. If he wasn’t looking forward rather than back, it would be the equivalent of Sue Lowden’s comment about paying medical bills with chickens and house painting.

How’s Pawlenty’s “gummint so small you could drown it in a bath-tub” workin’ out for those Gulf Coast Republican governors?

No, no, you misunderstand G.O. Republicans want a government small enough you could drown in a bathtub, not a gargantuan one that has the effect of one so small you could drown in a bath tub.
The Obama administration’s no-show in the gulf is making the republicans’ point about the incompetence of big government.

Pawlenty’s been laying groundwork ever since he decided to run for Governor. He’s not making any outright overtures because his numbers are so low even among conservatives in spite of all his efforts.
The game has changed radically since he began his quest for power. It is not that he missed his window, it is that someone is burning down the building.

All of his decisions lately that have harmed our state have been made to make him look more conservative for his presidential running. He is absolutely one of the worse governors I can remember in my lifetime.

We’ve all seen the spending graphs for previous administrations. Would have liked the governor to be more honest about the spending during the final years of george w.’s administration. There was nothing conservative about it. The bush family has always been quite liberal when spending our money. Where exactly did that money go, and why would we hire a new president (read vote for) who supported bush in his great military debacle?
When the governor said – it’s just math, what I heard was, “So sorry. We gave away all your hard earned tax dollars to the big cats during the previous republican administration. There’s nothing left for Obama to spend, so you common folk will have to take the hit.” Feels pretty crummy.
