Bachmann backs off BP defense, as GOPers distance from Barton

Rep. Michele Bachmann on Wednesday appeared to back off her criticisms of the Obama administration’s plans to have BP pay for the oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico, as other Republicans weighed in the plan: Rep. Joe Barton apologized to BP for the escrow fund, while Republican Rep. Jeff Miller called for Barton to step down from his leadership post on the House energy committee. Meanwhile, Bachmann’s opponent this fall, DFL Sen. Tarry Clark, pounced on Bachmann’s earlier criticisms, stating unequivocally, “I stand with taxpayers” — not BP.

On Tuesday, Bachmann said that a $20 billion victims escrow amounted to “wealth redistribution,” urged BP executives not to be “chumps,” and said the Obama administration was “fleecing” BP. But on Wednesday, she told CNN, “I’m not here to shill for BP. That’s not the goal. BP clearly is at fault here. They need to pay every last dime of damage and that’s what needs to be done. But at the same time, we don’t want these payouts to become political.”

Sen. Clark seized on Bachmann’s earlier statements.

“Let me be clear: I stand with the victims of this tragedy and the American taxpayers. They are the ones who deserve to be defended,” Clark said in a statement. “But instead, Congresswoman Bachmann has risen to the defense of BP. Holding BP accountable for this disaster is not ‘fleecing’ it. It’s making sure they do what’s right by the citizens of the Gulf whose livelihoods are threatened and by all Americans who want the Gulf cleaned up.”

She added, “Michele Bachmann refuses to hold BP accountable — but I will. Make no mistake, I stand with taxpayers, not BP.”

Bachmann isn’t the only Republican seeming to defend BP.

On Thursday afternoon, Texas Rep. Barton,  the ranking Republican on the Energy Committee, apologized to BP for the White House’s creation of the victims’ escrow, calling it a “shakedown” and a “slush fund.”

Barton’s comments prompted fellow Republican Rep. Jeff Miller to call for Barton’s resignation from the committee.

I condemn Mr. Barton’s statement. Mr. Barton’s remarks are out of touch with this tragedy and I feel his comments call into question his judgment and ability to serve in a leadership on the Energy and Commerce Committee. He should step down as Ranking Member of the Committee.

And Minority Leader John Boehner said on Thursday that Barton was wrong.

“I have said since the beginning that BP ought to be responsible for all of this cleanup,” Boehner told Fox News. “The fact is that they’ve agreed to put this $20 billion in escrow. I don’t know what context Mr. Barton was making that remark, but I’m glad that BP has accepted responsibility for their actions.”

Bachmann, Barton and others in the GOP are showing their true colors. They talk a pretty good game about patriotism and America coming first, but when push comes to shove, they’ll go to the mat for a foreign-owned oil megacorp that’s despoiled our natural resources.

One MORE reason why I am now an independent and no longer lean to an R.
Barton is a bought & paid for hack or daft if he can’t see that an escrow fund allows damages to be paid much quicker than would be paid AFTER the endless legal wrangling. And it ensures that money for damages is in hand – not promised. We need to stop all the anti-BP posturing and spend the effort on constructively stopping the flow and cleaning up with the help of the BP fund (assuming PB actually ponies up the 20B.) D’s & R’s It’s my hope that you see a November to Remember.

How did this woman get elected in the first place? She makes good press, but for all the wrong reasons….This country is under seige and these nitwits (Bachmann, Barton et all) come out and show support for the folks who are stuffing their pockets. And Bachmann is so stuck on complaining about anything the Obama Admin and democrats do that she doesn’t stop for a nanosecond to think about what she is going to say. So ultimately she puts her foot in her mouth and spends the next few days pulling it out after realizing that she has chosen the wrong stance.
We need someone who knows instinctively what to say and do, not someone that speaks before she thinks….
This is a country issue, but instead of pulling together both parties spend more time critizing each other instead of fixing the darn issue.
WE HAVE GOT TO OUTLAW ALL MONEY FROM OUR POLITICAL SYSTEM!!!!!

Besides their hatred of President Obama to keep them alive, one has to wonder just what mind altering drugs people like these are on. Bachmann now cowardly backs away from her statements, and apparently, Barton has just “retracted” his apology to BP. Well, how kind and generous of them. It’s obvious that Barton, Bachmann and other cheerleaders of BP feel no genuine sympathy for the real victims of this tragedy – the people and animals now suffering in the Gulf region.

Apology? Not Good Enough, Dems Say
Here’s an idea: We’ll get Barton together with Congressman Bob Etheridge. Bob can manhandle a better apology out of him.

It seems Bachmann has made it clear that her loyalty lies with big business and not with her constituents or the rest of working class America. I can only hope the voters in the 6th Congressional District see how toxic and divisive Bachmann is and vote her out in November.

But can Bob “Bully” Etheridge manhandle fully grown adults? He’s proof positive that Republicans don’t have a monopoly on idiots.

Michelle Bachmann is a disgrace to this nation. Send her to Texas and then let Texas secede from the Union as they wish.

The hapless voters in Minnesota’s 6th district will elect this pathetic excuse for a public servant once again. The good people of Washington, Anoka and especially Stearns county in Minnesota are living somewhere in the past. Who else would vote for a woman like Michele with her 60s flip hair doo, her June Cleaver pearl necklace and her vapid remarks that sound like excerpts from an I Love Lucy episode–Oh, Lucyyyy, you got some ‘splainin’ to do.” Who else would fall for such a ditzhead besides the voters in Minnesota’s 6th Congressional district?

Looks like a shill, sounds like a shill, speaks like a shill, smells like a shill. You ARE a shill, and a total idiot and you showed your true face. All of you big independent republicans and Tea Baggers are nothing but shills for big oil, pharmaceuticals, insurance and financial corporations. Bought and sold. Thanks for making that even more clear instead by giving us your truthful take on things instead of the usual BS lies.

Why critise Bachmann, she’s only being herself. She does not have the ability to ratiocinate.

The worst thing that ever happened to the GOP is Fox news. People like Hannity and company are making TV stars out of every single republican who makes idiotic statements. Palin, Bachmann and Brewer are much too stupid to be regulars on their network. The less media attention these nit-wits get the less their stupidly gets exposed.

I live in Bachman’s district. I have written to her a half dozen emails with legitimate concerns regarding our district. Never heard back from her once except for requests for money and canned propaganda media statements. I hope no one votes for her. She is an embarassment to Minnesota.
