OutFront Minnesota Action, the political action committee of the state’s largest LGBT advocacy organization, endorsed DFLer Margaret Anderson Kelliher for governor on Friday. The group interviewed the DFL candidates for governor as well as Independence Party candidate Tom Horner. Republican candidate Tom Emmer declined to be interviewed for the endorsement.

“It is an honor to have the endorsement of OutFront Minnesota, and I am proud to stand with the GLBT community in this campaign for a better Minnesota,” Kelliher said in a statement. “As Governor, I will work to end injustice against all people in our state. And I will fight to deliver on the promise of equal rights for every Minnesotan.”

OutFront Minnesota Executive Director Amy Johnson said, “Margaret Anderson Kelliher has been a strong advocate for equality for our community, and will continue to be once she is elected governor.”

“The fact that four out of the five leading candidates for governor sought our endorsement, and had so much to contribute to a moving discussion of the role of basic equality for GLBT people plays in making Minnesota a better place for everybody, speaks volumes about Minnesota’s enduring commitment to fairness,” public policy director Monica Meyer added. “We sincerely thank each of the candidates who took part. Each is worthy of our respect and appreciation, but in the end, we believe that House Speaker Margaret Anderson Kelliher will bring the strongest combination of strengths to the governor’s office on January 1, 2011.”

What’s with all the gay stories on this site. Oh wait, never mind.

Yeah, Marge looks kinda butchy.

Congratulations for Margaret Anderson Kelliher. I think with this endorsement I’m going to have to say I support her as well. While I feel safe with any of the DFL candidates and will gladly vote for any of them, I support MAK.

Dennis, grow up.

Congratulations, MAK!

And thank you also to Dayton, Entenza and Horner for seeking out Outfront Minnesota Action’s endorsement as well!

Eric, I’m sorry to inform you, but it is quite literally impossible for Dennis to grow up. You see, growing up requires maturity, an asset Dennis sorely lacks. It would even be too much to ask him to shut his mouth. If it’s not gaping open in bewilderment, it’s issuing bibble-babble uncontrollably. Alas. What a disappointment.

What about Dano, PQ?

PQ –

I just think reading about all this gay stuff makes his private parts “nervous”

Sardonic mocking aside, yes, it IS exciting that four out of five major gubernatorial candidates support LGBT equality, isn’t it, Dano?

I don’t think that THAT woman from Stillwater is funny at all. Even so, I can’t help but wonder how Dano can improve on that “joke” if at all …

I think OutFront is putting party before principle. MAK is the weakest of the three DFL candidates on GLBT issues, yet she gets their endorsement? I smell a rat.

Brix, could you elaborate as to why you think MAK is the weakest of the three DFL candidates on LGBT issues? Thanks.

I noticed in another article that Stonewall DFL endorsed MAK at the state convention last April …

Lane, Stonewall DFL had initially endorsed Matt Entenza, but was forced to endorse MAK along with the rest of the party.

But yes, I’m curious to see why Brix thinks MAK is a weak champion on LGBTQ issues.

It’s well known within the DFL that she did everything she could to keep John Marty’s marriage equality bill from getting a vote. Note that she does fine with sound bites, but when it comes to action, like speaking at Marriage Equality Day at the capitol in Feburary, she’s nowhere to be found. Contrast her website statement on GLBT issues with Entenza’s, and you’ll see why so many people at Pride told me that they are quitting OutFront over this.

Brix, I appreciate your passion — everyone should be engaged in this crucial election!

As someone who was there for the deliberation, I can say that “putting party before principle” wasn’t what motivated OutFront’s PAC. Instead, it was MAK’s compelling arguments. More than the other candidates, she convinced me (and others) that she can win the primary, win the election, and pass marriage legislation in 2011. We’ll have to keep her feet to the fire, of course, but it was her arguments that convinced us, not the party endorsement.

Re: sound bytes vs. action… I agree that it’s been a lousy 8 years for pro-equality legislation. All the candidates’ statements are very encouraging, but it will take the departure of Pawlenty and his veto pen before any of them turn that conviction into legislative action.

I would regret if anyone decides to quit OutFront because we’ve endorsed a candidate for governor; I would at least hope for a conversation with them first, to clear up any misperceptions that might be out there.
