Franken cosponsors Stabenow’s unemployment extension bill
Monday, June 28, 2010 at 1:25 pm
Sen. Debbie Stabenow (D-Mich.) plans to introduce a standalone bill later this week that’ll continue federally extended unemployment insurance benefits. Sen. Al Franken is among the bill’s cosponsors.
The jobs bill, also known as H.R. 4213 or the extenders package, that included the extension along with a number of other provisions failed to move forward to a vote last week. Since the beginning of June, approximately 1.2 million Americans have lost their extended UI benefits.
Democratic Sens. Sherrod Brown (Ohio), Jeff Merkley (Ore.) and Sheldon Whitehouse (R.I.) join Franken in cosponsoring the measure, which includes a $25-a-week supplement dropped as Democrats pared the jobs bill back to meet the requirements of moderate deficit hawks, none of whom ultimately voted for the bill. It does not create any new tiers of unemployment benefits, instead restoring Tier IV benefits to the jobless. (Congress added or expanded Tiers I through IV last year, as part of its stimulus plan.)
Sen. Olympia Snowe (R-Maine), who refused to cross the aisle for the jobs bill — objecting to, among other things, the closing of a tax loophole for “S corporations” — has said she will vote for a standalone UI bill. She urged Senate Democrats to take one up last week.

I hope this stand alone bill can pass! I gave up my Unemployment for a job, and was let go today. My husband was recieving benefits up until June 2. Without this bill passing, we stand to lose everything, and will not be able to feed our children. We do not live outside of our means, and we both lost our jobs of 10+ years in the economy. We need these benefits and jobs! I do hope the senate realizes that we, as are most, are registered voters, and vote in EVERY election. The may want to pass this soon, I have a feeling that in November some of them may need these benefits themselves!

I have been phoning Senators offices for the past week explaining my situation.
I was laid off last November, and have just expired my FIRST 6 months of UI.
I have 3 really good job prospects, one is actually a 6 figure salary, but none of them start until late July or early August.
But, if this bill doesn’t pass, I will not have the money to pay my rent in July.
I am driving without the legally required car insurance and with expired licence tags.
So, I would like to propose a few things:
First, if anybody gets evicted starting July 1st, let’s start taking over the Senator’s offices….use them to sleep in, send faxes, use the phones and their computers to find work.
Second, when we do find work, claim 99 exemptions. I REFUSE to pay any more taxes!! Remember the old saying ‘No taxation without representation’?? Well, it is VERY obvious that Americans have no representation!! “Taxation without representation is TYRANNY!!”
Third, if this bill does not pass, let’s make sure that this 4th of July is the SECOND one that NO AMERICAN will EVER FORGET!!
Everybody get your guns ready….and let BLOOD RUN IN THE STREETS!!!
We can afford to GIVE Pakistan $7.5 BILLION to arm and train Taliban to kill AMERICAN soldiers…..we can afford to GIVE Egypt $7 Billion, we can afford to GIVE Haitian earthquake victims over $2 BILLION dollars, we can afford to GIVE $30 MILLION to Palestinian refugees…
We CAN AFFORD to keep the Bush tax cuts for the wealthiest 1 percent of the country.
We CAN AFFORD to bail out Wall Street and buy GM.
But we CAN’T AFFORD to take care of middle class AMERICANS who have lost their jobs through no fault of their own???
And this is being decided by people that ‘We the People’ are paying!!!
‘We the People’ are ALLOWING these people to GIVE our tax dollars away to others, but they won’t help us??? With OUR OWN MONEY????
I am absolutely ASHAMED of the Senators and to be called an American!!!
And Senators…..you should be ASHAMED of YOURSELVES!!!
Even more so if you consider yourself a ‘christian’!!!
Would jesus ALLOW people to be thrown out of their homes and apartments??
Would he ALLOW them to go hungry???
And yet FUND a 9 YEAR war, in which thousands of innocents have been killed??

Kim, you’re not alone. It seems like the companies that are most likely to hire someone who has been unemployed for a while are those that have spurious situations — either they can’t keep someone in that role, or they will try to take advantage of that person by going back on contracts (get everything in writing!!!), etc. I had that happen to me, but I had requested a copy of the signed agreement before I started and that saved my butt. Otherwise, they could have probably succeeded in keeping me from getting unemployment. (They had wanted me to pay back $15K in requisite training, among other things.)
Keep your head up and keep trying, like a horse with running a race with blinders!

Not one REPUBLICAN voted to extend unemployment. They don’t care about the middle class.

Why do Republicans hate America so much? It’s like they want our country to fail.

Only the little people collect unemployment, apparently.

I am disabled and my husband was laid off from his job last July. Not only laid off but we relocated 2200 miles for this job. His ui benefits have run out. My meds alone are $400 per month. He has sent hundreds of resumes, networked and all the other thinbgs a man can do for his family. I know feel Inam even more a burden than ever. Believe you me our country and gov make us wait 25 months to prove you are disabled. Half my family is in heaven 2 died before rec any money. I worked all my life ubtil I crawled on my knees to keep my job as long as I could. WE NEED TO STAND UP AS ONE PEOPLE AND TAKE CARE OF OUR OWN FIRST!!!!!!!!!

I would like to say that the same people that have not voted to pass un employment have no clue as to what it is like to see our governent that is suppossed to be by the people for the people can manage to bail out big banks and big corporations because there to big to fail with our tax dollars but they cant seem to help the little people i guess they dont get enough money from us like they do the lobbyist for them to help us. i have a proposal why dont they trade me my un employment check for there check so they can see how hard it is to survive on what little bit i survive on for a family of 4 and with the money that i would from there check i could live high on the hog. they are simply clueless

I just e-mailed Debbie Stabenow to thank her for her efforts on behalf of the long-term unemployed. I am so hopeful that the new bill will pass. Is it really true the Republicans only care about the rich? It would seem so.

Ok, Thought I’d check in here to see where we are …Oh, they ( Our Legislatures),say they are for relief for the unemployed ,but it is not the top priority today ..You know, supreme court confirmations and general’s and all that is very URGENT! All The while families are at high anxiety levels. Bankers and creditors charging overdrafts and late fees now. I would love to see them add to the Bill when they ever get to it, that if extentions are provided, then any overdraft charges or late charges due to their failure to respond in a timely manner be waived for those who depended on those benefits.MR> PRESIDENT YOUDO HAVE A CARD TO PLAY!!, Please FORCE THE LAWMAKERS TO STAY UNTIL THE EXTENDED BENEFITS BILL IS PASSED…I am a 99er who has ernestly sought work to no avail.I have depleated my little bit of pension and have had to give up my house. Do you really think I wanted that to happen after working thirty years of my life? The US legislatures has caused this element by their negligence to their constituants thus furhering hardships not deserving. I pray for each and every lawmaker in this country to step aside of their political positions and do what is morally right and not waste one precious second in helping their own countrymen. Are you listening?

I have a question for all of you that all blaming Republicans for not getting an extension to unemployment benefits. Have any of you bothered to read what was in the bill? It was a bunch of wastefull spending loaded on to of the unemployment extension. I am unemployed and my benefits have run out, but passing a bill so loaded with waste is just stupid. Pass a bill that is only for unemployment benefits and fight about all the other crap in the bill later.

Which bill, Greg? The standalone version, which didn’t pass, or the jobs bill, which was halted by filibuster-happy Republicans? Also, why don’t you enlighten us by providing a link to the text of the bill where you read it.

I’m sick of people and their stereotyping. These days there are too many people who determine their political views based on the bi-partisan ways that dominate this country. Regardless of which party supports which bill, how about we all start thinking for ourselves? Yes, times are hard, and the end of unemployment benefits is a terrifying reality, but when you think about pure facts, WHERE WILL THIS MONEY BE COMING FROM? We can rely on and hope for social programs all that we want, but such solutions only function in an ideal world. THERE ARE NO JOBS TO BE HAD, SO WHAT JOBS CAN BE TAXED? We keep turning to the GOVERNMENT for help, but what we fail to realize is that WE ARE THE GOVERNMENT.
The things that need to be changed are the pork-barreling legislature and the involvement of corporations in government and vice versa.
