No vote on unemployment extension until after Senate recess

By Paul Schmelzer
Thursday, July 01, 2010 at 3:20 pm

This morning, Iowa Sen. Tom Harkin raised the prospect that the U.S. Senate might hold another vote on extending federal unemployment insurance benefits before the July 4 holiday. “I hope we can pass it tonight before we go home for the 4th of July,” he told reporters on a conference call. But that hope doesn’t seem founded: some senators have already left, and now, according to staffers at offices of both Harkin and Sen. Al Franken, a vote is unlikely this week.

“It’s our understanding that we’re out of session until the 12th (due to the funeral of Sen. Byrd) so nothing until then,” Franken’s press secretary, Jess McIntosh, wrote in an email to the Minnesota Independent.

Harkin Communications Director Kate Cyrul clarified: “On this morning’s call, he was trying to drive home the point that the Senate needs to act on this extension as soon as possible. He is still committed to getting this extension passed and is hopeful we will take it up when we return.”

McIntosh, too, emphasized Franken’s commitment to the measure and says he’s cosponsored every extension that’s come along.

“Sen. Franken has expressed many times that not passing UI last week was one of the greatest frustrations he’s felt since coming to the Senate,” she noted. “He talks to folks -– often in the building trades, in union halls -– all over Minnesota who wouldn’t be in their houses if it weren’t for UI. These are people who have worked all their lives — their job is their identity. And this is really hard for them.”

THIS IS AN EMERGENCY SITUATION HERE!!!

HOW DARE THEY TAKE A RECESS FOR THE 4TH OF JULY WHILE MILLIONS OF AMERICANS DON’T HAVE A DIME IN THEIR POCKETS!!!

THE PRESIDENT SHOULD MANDATE THAT THEY RESOLVE THIS ISSUE BEFORE ANYONE LEAVES OR BETTER YET NOT PAY THEM UNTIL THE BILL IS PASSED!! ALSO, WHAT ABOUT THE MILLIONS OF AMERICANS WHO HAVE EXHAUSTED THEIR BENEFITS…WHAT HAPPENED TO THE TIER 5 EXTENSION?!

SHAME ON THE “LEADERS” OF THIS COUNTRY!

For the first time EVER I am frightened for our Country. How could they possibly break until July 12th while our own people cannot put food on their tables. They should not be allowed to go until this issue is resolved. I am embarrased by our leaders from Obama to every senator. No one is taking our Country seriously anymore. When Obama goes on the road and publicly bashes the republicans this only causes a grave situation to get much worse. Change? Really???? This is getting worse everyday. SHAME ON ALL OF THEM!!! I do not know how they will sleep every night while they are recessing on our dime.

They should be ASHAMED OF THEMSELVES!!!!!!!!!!

cALL THEM BACK AND MAKE THEM COME BACK AND VOTE.

The president has the legal right to do that if it is an emergency or “important” – well is this not important enough? Is this not an emergency?

A whole week off for them, probably with pay, lots of good food at their barbecues this weekend, no doubt. They’ll be back on the 12th??????? Do they really think the people who are being evicted and foreclosed on this weekend and next week can survive this? Do they think the children who will go hungry can ever forget this?

I am absolutely SICKENED by the US Senate Republicans and also the Senate Democrats who are voting no or holding things up. Good lord, come ON already!!!!

Well Harry Reid can bite me!

The stimulus money is there to use but the democrats are saving it for their wall street buddies.

Have a nice 4th of July Harry, Nancy and Obama.

I’ll boil some hot dogs and celebrate with my wife and kids. It might as well be our last supper.

I am 59, worked since age 13, an executive unemployed for 18 months, Used all of savings, 401k and cannot even find 3 pt jobs. I have a list of my hundreds of applications, contacts, agency meetings, networking and more. Paid taxes, a lot for 40 years. We have been eating peanut butter and jelly for 6 months, my son had to leave school, he cannot find a job, and never had unemployment and our lights cable will be shut with the meager benefits that will stop due this insane political garbage. We now have no health insurance so off to welfare; food stamps federally subsidized free health care and all government programs that cost triple what we have been keeping up with. No unemployment check, nothing gets paid. My son will never get a job and at 59 I will work any job but no one will even respond. I have many letters from FED jobs, closed, they say, well I was a VISTA and Peace Corps Volunteer because I wanted to make a difference. I did. My only wish to all of you is your families and friends start losing their houses, have no savings and use the federal “welfare” system. No unemployment that just goes back into the economy? My business degree calculates that this insanity will cost the government treble. And guess what? My kids’ college loans I am still paying will stop today. Are you going to garnish my wages? Take me to court?
You are all political losers that have no idea of the extent of taking away unemployment. You never will as not one of you could get a real job. You have crippled our family and I will be mentally disabled as well as physically disabled after not eating, so SSD, here I come. Much better benefits, large check as I had large earnings and Medicare. Do the math you clowns who think millions of us do not want to work. Let’s give banks more money so they can raise interest rates and cut credit for all of us who had perfect credit. That damn credit bill backfired, just as not passing unemployment benefits. I testified as a VISTA volunteer on abused children and unemployable parents and changed the law. I will have this on every website that exists. None of you should be reelected. Have a nice vacation while millions of us barbeque peanut butter and jelly.

Here I am, checking the news every so often to see if there is a reason to celebrate the July 4 weekend, just to be totally disgusted at the fact that some senators “already left” (for their Independence Day vacation, leaving the million + unemployed people like myself to suffer. These are truly heartless people who don’t care about the needs of unfortunate citizens like us. They should be fired and I hope the people will vote them out of their offices in November. They don’t deserve to represent anyone since the sole interest they are serving is theirs alone, and no one else’s.

I am just as frustrated as everyone, but what is the point of the Senate voting when they don’t have 60 votes? It would appear our hopes now lie in the hands of the two Republican Senators from Maine and whoever is selected as Senator Byrds replacement.
So, Olympia Snowe and Sharon Collins should be commended for doing the right thing. Write them and ask politely for their continued support as well as your state Senator.
God Bless us all.

Writing something in all caps usually discourages people from reading what you write. Just as someone writing in all lowercase.

On that note this is deplorable they are going on vacation without extending the benefits to those without unemployment. I’m not a Democrat by any stretch of the imagination but the Republicans and Democrats that voted no to this disgust me. I wish we could do away with both parties and their rhetoric.

Wow! I hope everyone remembers the stress that we as unemployed Americans have gone through when we vote next time. Please recall the docket of the for and against important matters, like unemployment, and vote politicians in or OUT by how they performed when we needed their help. Remember, without us little people, there is no need for senators or congressmen.
They let us down as we approach a holiday celebrating the anniversary of our country.
Hey lawmakers….don’t forget that we all paid into the system FIRST, before we asked for help.

The Democrats, and Obama, passed the Paygo resolution, and ever since then have attempted to violate it every time any bill of any kind comes up! This would have passed long ago if not for the fact that the flat refuse to fund it by using already approved Stimulus funds!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Voting people with this amount of gall out is not sufficient. Those that voted for paygo and now bleat and blame the opposition for demanding that they abide by their own resolution deserve a physical beating.

I am ashamed this Senate is taking a PAID vacation after their failure to pass the unemployment extension. How dare they?? I saw an interview with the joke of a Senator from Nevada Senator Ensign (Republican) He was asked about the people who have lost and will lose their benefits. He arrogantly responded with nothing about the people and said “The most important thing is we not add to the debt” Just Brilliant,,,,Nevada you need to vote him out when he comes up again in 2 years. He has shown zero interest in your state and the fact it is the number 1 highest unemployment state in the NATION. Senator Ensign you get that????

I ve worked for 30 yrs thought I would always have tons of job opps I am in the medical field! My UI has been frozen, I have benefits but my state is out of money. They owe me 1200 bucks now. That is the amount of my house payment that I cant pay today. I also owe 1/2 of last months so now that is 1800. I have three kids and my husband is on UI federal tier, He is getting his but its gone July 30th.
We cant make our bills on his UI alone. We have been buying groceries at a discount store for 40 bucks for 4 days. I applied for FSSA but we can only get food and it takes 35 days to process it so we wont get food until August. What are we suppose to do, what about out car. It will be taken by the bank if I dont pay it soon. Mid-July when the Senate is back is too long. How will I find a job w/o a car? No buses in the country! Phone gets turned off next week too. How will they call me for the interview? Not. My cell phone is off, first thing to go. I paid my electric bill but I am behind and another is due on the 12th again not in time for approval of the bill. I did pay my car insurance. What should I do?

Before anyone reads this, I apologize for any misspellings or typos but I am emotional writing this at this time.

I too am on unemployment and have been now for 9 months. I was part of a reduction in force from a very large corporation ACS who in fact has many of my state’s contract and also administers our state unemployment. My job right now is being trained to a young woman in Guatemala…GUATEMALA…Many other jobs with this same company goes out to India, etc.. which they continue to secure state contracts. So they are paid by “our” tax dollars, front with domestic staff and then behind the scenes fill in positions with outsourcing to other countries.

I have applied for numerous jobs and I guess due to the fact that there are hundreds of applicants to every job, I’ve not yet secured anything. I’ve called my mortgage company and got a forbearance which means I am paying principal only (Huntington Banks – really works with you), I called my credit card company Chase and got into the debt relief program but still if I miss one payment on either I’m in huge trouble. When I was working our monthly expenses was over $3900.00. Now that I am on unemployment that has changed only towhat I have been able to negotiate. I have a newer vehicle, I cannot sell because I am upside down. Toyota extended me 3 months no payment but won’t do it again so if I don’t pay they will take the car back.

I believe there is a major problem in this country part of which is outsourcing our jobs, age discrimination and there seems to be a discrimination that is rising if you don’t have a college degree. Many people are in high level positions today in their 50′s, positions of management that have no college degree. Years ago you could go into a company and work your way up. Today it seems like that isn’t possible. HOw ignorant for a company to think that the only people with an ability tothink, to reason, to work, to be of value are those with a college degree.

I feel sad for how our country seems to have turned out. There is little value for who we are, how loyal we can be, what we care about it’s all about the money.. the money.. the almighty dollar.

Maybe if we all just sit keep being strong we will get through it. It hurts me to think of any one being hungry or hurting or sick and can’t get help. What ever happened to love one another. What ever happened to not judging. Remember if someone comes to your door hungry, don’t turn them away… don’t judge them…you never know who it is you are looking at.

What the Republican Senators do not understand at all, is that there are millions of registered Republicans voters, who through no fault of their own, are now unemployed. For the Republican Senators to continue to show, week after week, no mercy, no sympathy, neither empathy, nor consideration to the plight of members of their own voting base, who are barely surviving on the $450.00 a week they receive in employment insurance is unforgivable and now diabolical. I am so absolutely disgusted with my own Republican Party, that for the first time in my life, I would not only vote for a Democrat replacement Senator this fall, I would vote straight ticket Democrat all the way and call it a day!
The deficit of an unemployed household is horrifying and I can assure you heartless Republicans in Congress that it is much more terrifying to the unemployed then the National deficit is to you. Tell me, how can a family of five survive on $450.00 and now nothing thanks to you? How can we go to the grocery store and get a week’s worth of food, plus fill the gas tank up to go job hunting, take the kids to school, take one child to a doctor, that we now pay for in cash since we lost our health issuance, get the prescription filled, buy dog food and set aside the left over pennies for rent, utilities, car repairs, braces payments, etc?
My family has never asked for a hand out. For three months of last year I went to a food bank and stood in line for five hours to get a box of random canned goods, and still have not thought of applying for food stamps! To think we used to hold Republican precinct meetings in our home. What home now, the banks home? I have worked tirelessly on multiple Republican campaigns and for what, abandonment, disgrace and disregard? When you Republicans voted No the last three consecutive times to not extend unemployment benefits, you have taken the food right out of my three children’s mouth. There is nowhere for us to cut back. I am a fiscal conservative for God’s sake!
I wish like hell we could vote your arrogance out of office and then you could try to live on $450.00 a week and support your wife and three kids on that. But what I wish for more than anything is that I could then vote to take it away from you without warning! If you Republicans believe in the same God I do, I pray He resigns down on you an Eye for an Eye. And because I have faith the size of a mustard seed in Him, which is 1000% more faith that I have left in your heartless folly, I know that He will.

Sincerely Yours, One of a Million+++ Disenfranchised Republican Unemployed Voters.

My husband and I were lifelong, very active Republicans. THAT HAS FOREVER CHANGED TODAY!!! You disgusting Washington Politicians and the financial rapist on Wall Street all share the same bed. Since my husband lost his unemployment extension three weeks ago by the complete and utter incompetence of our Republican Senators and their complacent failure to remedy and recognize a National working class crisis, we have endured the deficit changes to our budget by your actions in the following way. I had the braces removed 6 months early from my 13 and 14 year old children’s teeth. My car got repossessed since I chose to pay the rent instead of the car to keep a roof over our heads. I emphasize the word RENT, because we already LOST our FAMILY HOME of 13 YEARS to FORECLOSURE!! As a result of losing my car, I have had to stop working at the bedside of a 90 year old Hospice patent with congestive heart failure because I can’t get there! Her family says she is declining since my abrupt absence and she can’t understand why I’m not coming anymore. Neither can I! Now myself and my husband are both unemployed!
Now that I don’t have a car, I have applied for Medicaid for my three children. And since we don’t have a car, they now qualify. In the last two weeks, I have saved money by not buying frozen concentrate juice from the grocery store. Instead I have hand squeezed over 52 lemons, which I picked myself from a lemon tree in the yard of our rented house, to make lemonade for my children to drink in lieu of buying store bought fruit juice. THANK YOU REPUBLICAN SENATORS FOR MAKING ME FEEL LIKE AN ILLEGAL IMMIGRANT IN MY OWN COUNTRY!!! I have negotiated with a doctor for his best cash price to see my daughter who had fallen ill, only to get to the pharmacy and find his prescription was $62.00 when the doctor’s visit was only $50.00. I had to have the doctor call the pharmacy and prescribe something available from Wal-Mart’s $9.00 generic brands.
This is just a glimpse in the life of one of the over 1.5 million Americans you have affect in just the last 3.5 weeks by your blatant neglect. I only wish we could all AFFORD the GAS to drive to the steps of the Capital to hold you Republicans accountable. Before this Depression set in, my husband was the Manager of a thriving construction company, after having worked in the construction industry for over 20 years. Construction is no longer an Industry, it’s a charity. He was laid off along with every other employee that he worked with and supervised, all now on unemployment. His former employer is completely out of business after 30 years of outstanding service and workmanship. THANKS TO THE REPUBLICAN SENATORS WE ALL FEEL LIKE ILLEGAL IMMIGRANTS IN OUR OWN COUNTRY!!!

I cannot strongly agree with economist Nouriel Roubini (Doctor Doom) when he said, “When Americans lose everything, they lose it.”

The Senators let us hang out to dry for their Memorial Day vacation. Now it’s the Fourth of July. I am a proud and very angry American.

But we unemployed Americans can’t celebrate our independence from Tyranny on July 4th because of the Tyrants.

The Tyrants will take a 7 day vacation from doing NOTHING! When will we revolt? WHEN? After they have starved us to death and we are too weak to fight or even speak! What the hell are we doing AMERICA?

Our Declaration of Independence was founded on the concept that any civil government depends on the consent of those who are governed, which may be withdrawn at any time.

On this Independence Day, are you able to celebrate your consent to be governed by people who chose to let you and your family starve while they take their second 7 day paid vacation in a month?

Can you image having two 7 day paid vacations in the span of just 30 days?

They just got back from their Memorial Day vacation on June 7th (Memorial Day was Monday, May 31st) refusing to act to prevent your extension from expiring on June 2nd, 2010.

Ask yourself, is our government acting reasonably?

I argue they are as unreasonable as Marie Antoinette. What should we eat at our Independence Day cookout, Cake?

Shame on us if we continue to do nothing. Shame, shame on us if we do not withdrawal our consent to be governed by this reckless government.

Our founding fathers had no phones, cars, internet to communicate between each other their dissatisfaction with being governed unreasonably.

Instead they used invisible ink and rode on horseback in the dead of night, up and down the entire East Coast including the interior southern states no less, to communicate between each other their dissatisfaction regarding their government’s unreasonable behavior.

Their horseback trail later became the route for the first postal service.

What is the matter with us that we are so feeble that we would accept this as reasonable behavior from our government?

On this Independence Day, ask yourself if you are going to continue to do nothing by giving your consent to be governed by this horrendous government?

I beg of you, would any reasonable person consent to this?

Dear Reader and Fellow Americans,

Please cut and paste the link below into your browser. It is a map of your country that tracks the national unemployment rate per county, per state, in a shaded map for the last 3.5 years from 2007-2010. The darker the area / region gets the higher the unemployment rate.

http://cohort11.americanobserver.net/latoyaegwuekwe/multimediafinal.html

To all the Republican Senators who just voted NO for the fourth time and have refused to SAVE your fellow unemployed Americans who have giving you your job, I ask that you find a spare moment during you Independence Day vacation and just take a look at the map of your country. Find your state and your voting district. Than just take a wild guess as to many of your constituents are involved here. Good luck to all of you in November, we can’t wait to return your vote NO!

And to my fellow citizens who are lucky enough to still be currently employed and feel this matter does not affect you, please find your state and county on the map above and see just how really close you are to being next in line at the unemployment office.

This is an absolute travesty. I cannot imagine how it feels to know that your electricity will be cut off next week, or that you may have to live in your car next month…

It is appalling and absurdly DISGUSTING that the Senate is recessing without passing the extension. I would love to go ahead and take a few of the opposing Senators and have them shack up with some of the unemployed. Let them experience life knowing that you can’t afford to pay the rent next month, let alone buy hot dogs to celebrate this holiday weekend.

What sweet irony that the Senate happens to be recessing for the most patriotic holiday of the year. I, for one, vow to NOT celebrate Independence day, because when millions of Americans are unable to pay rent, clothe their children and feed their families, then that is indication to me that we are not a free people. We are chained by the burdens of debt, hunger, and and contempt by a Senate that deems the people lazy and undeserving because this isn’t an emergency in their eyes. It certainly is an emergency to the man and his son living on peanut butter and jelly, or to the mother of 3 who can’t afford shoes to replace the too-tight, hole-ridden shoes that her children outgrew months ago.

To quote a comment I read today, “To you, this is a recession. To us, this is a depression.”

I weep for America.

These complaints are completely misplaced. The Democratic congress passed Pay-As-You-Go rules, and the Republicans, RIGHTFULLY, have been holding their feet to the fire to make them live up to that rule. An ongoing extension of unemployment benefits, which has become entrenched for the last 2 years, is not an emergency measure. They have had opportunity after opportunity to offset this. Both sides agree that it is something they will vote for, but the Democrats refuse to pay for it, straight in the face of their own pay go rule.

Quit blaming the Repulicans for insisting on adherence to the rule passed by the Democrats themselves, and do not make any additions spurious “2 wrongs make a right” about past spending prior to the current pay go rule being adopted. The Democrats just need to pay for this out of the Stimulus money, already approved. That is what it is for. They are to blame, not the Republicans.

If you are not rich, you’re not shit. There are a lot of programs that would lose funding if they were to use the funds the republicans want used. The fact of the matter is the unemployment rate is considered an emergency, and emergencies do not need to be paid for to be approved. The republicans are hoping that by trying to make the democrats look bad they will take back the majority in the house and senate come November. I have never claimed to be a dem., or a republican, but after watching and reading every damn article that has come out on this issue, I am fast becoming a hard fast democrat. I am 46 years old, and am taking courses through state approved training, if I fail to complete the courses I will have to pay back the state for the funds they paid for my courses, and with no unemployment extension available I am now looking for work, full time. So I get to try to work full time and school full time, that is hard for anybody to do, let alone somebody that is my age. It pisses me off when I read about people who think that we enjoy this, and are milking the system. Comments like lazy, and using the money for drugs and not wanting to work. I make $2000.00 less a month on unemployment than I did when I was working, like I have money for drugs. I barely have money for bills.

we wouldnt need a stimulus plan if it werent for Bush spending the nearly 236 billion dollar surplus that was left to him then on top of that putting our nation 400 billion in the hole with a fake war that is still on going for absolutely no reason. I would love to see a Republican senator parade through their cities this weekend for the 4th of July. A day of celebrating freedom and being able to have the american dream shattered by the finger pointers who says dont spend while they are hoarding all the cash for themelves and their greedy partners. To be honest im more terrified of the republicans with their noses held high than bin laden.

Obama put the unemployment extension into the big jobs bill, basically holding the extension hostage. He’s using it for leverage to get the Republicans to sign the jobs bill. He doesn’t care about whether people in this country have food on their tables. If he did, he would have separated it out before the bill first went to the Senate. Republicans and most Democrats (except Harry Reid) want the bill to go through, but not in its big, bloated form, adding more billions to the deficit. So now it looks like it has finally been taken out. But what happens? The jerks go on vacation. I’m glad they’ll be enjoying their cookouts while 200,000 more a week try to figure out what to feed their families. For shame!

Unbelievable what they have put us through! Letters from UI in the mail that say I’ll continue getting UI, but yet the website rejects it…Every time I’ve called UI, I was told something different. Every week the UI amount was different…til it just disappeared. Last week when I called the lady at UI said, ‘It was voted down…emergency funding gone’
THE ONLY REASON we can even STAY in our house is because of that PISS ASS amount of UI they dwindled down too, until they just refused to give more, because ‘the recession in MN. has claimed to be over’
THAT WAS BECAUSE 10,000 census jobs were added, which will be gone very short..and PLUNGE, there we go back to where we were. Meanwhile
Families suffer, meanwhile the ONLY means people had to even LOOK for a job, go away, because no one can afford to keep the car, or the house, or the apartment, or food in the fridge.
And to take a break while SO many people suffer is enough to make me think…’all the promises politicians make’ to keep the people safe, is a bunch of crap…
I never believed a word they said, and I never will.
THe president certainly has his head up his butt on this one……
Seriously
Only WE care, not THEM.
Meanwhile, there goes the money we used at one time, to feed ourselves…now there is nothing…what next?

My heart goes out to all of you during this difficult time. I have been where you all are; once in 1996, and again in 2005. I had to sell/pawn everything I owned in 1996 in order to eat canned corned-beef hash to get back on my feet, and had to take an undesirable job, which eventually opened other doors. 2005 was a repeat due to a bankruptcy in the energy industry and brought me back to earth where I will stay. I might not be going through it now, but I most certainly have…and the economic crisis we’re currently end could last a decade and I could find myself there again…who knows?

I will pray for all of you, as I know He’ll answer just as He answered my prayers when I needed it most. He taught me a few lessons in the process.

Lesson 1 was frugality. I ditched the 3500 sq ft home (allowed it to foreclose), bought some land and put a mobile home on it that will be paid off in two months. There’s no dishonor in becoming trailer trash.

Lesson 2 was how fragile we all are. We are not invincible. We must plan in good times for bad to come.

Lesson 3: government is not the solution.

Government DOES have a responsibility to make this right with all of you because it is their very squandering of your taxes and usurpation of your constitution that has brought this tragedy into being. I would be remiss not to point out that this is not a legitimate function of federal government, but they are responsible for cleaning up the mess they made. An honest and knowledgeable evaluation reveals that it wasn’t simply the excesses of Wall Street as the sole culprit. The federal government contributed greatly. How can we trust these folks to fix what they were involved in causing? It’s almost like trusting the guy who burned down your house to rebuild it…what’s funny is you’re paying him to do both!

Government has a place, but centrally planning an economy is not one of those places, simply for the fact that many schools of economic thought are so disparate, and our politicians have a tendency to favor those who help them get elected. The results are booms and busts, rather than steady economic growth. The federal government is there to preserve your liberty and they are doing all BUT that. At this point, I’m sure many of you would be willing to accept the potential of a terrorist attack if only you didn’t have to face the uncertainty of whether or not it will be peanut butter or beans and rice as your only choices for supper, and that’s if you are fortunate enough.

Just remember when we’re bombing Iran and nation-building there that it will be done under a completely democrat-controlled government. That won’t make it any less wrong than when it was done under a republican-controlled government. And that will be where the tax dollars you were previously able to pay will be spent rather than helping you through this mess.

When you do all get back on your feet, and I’m sure most of you will, think about the failures of government to ensure your livelihood. Hopefully, you’ll arrive at the same conclusion I have. That is this illegitimate form of unconstitutional government we have cares only about maintaining its power…it does NOT care about YOU. Take control of your own life as much as you can, even if that means you have to forego cable TV, a large home, or an XBOX in good times so you can sock cash, physical precious metals, storable food, etc. away in preparation for bad times. Ditch that Huge mortgage in favor of land and a modest home. Do you really need all that room? Even with my 7 kids, the answer wound up being a resounding “no”.

Save agressively and invest modestly. Plan for uncertain times during prosperity. Don’t allow yourself to be a victim of the government that’s sworn to defend your liberty. And never, ever, EVER trust your government to provide for your well-being. They will let you down time and again.

I know some of this advice seems moot at a time when you are all uncertain about when your roads back to prosperity will begin to be paved. Nonetheless, it is advice that rings as true today as it would have for me in 1996 if someone had offerred it, and finally came to fruition in 2005. What I hope it gives is that: hope. Not Obama hope, but real hope. Make a commitment to yourselves and your children to never become a mindless consumer again. If you have to, for the time being, take a job that will get you through. Let that huge home foreclose…credit ratings of the individual are overrated; it’s not worth the worry it causes. And in case I forgot…never, never, EVER trust your government to provide for you.

i explained to them that it was not in there best intrest to not try and find a job that sooner or later this gravy train would end to this i say the train has reached the station and its time to get off

I listen to people blaming either the Republicans or the Democrats for not getting unemployment extension passed. But in reality it is both parties. They both want their provisions in the bill and neither is willing to give in. The only way for this to get resolved is for both parties to agree to eliminate everything from the bill except the unemployment extension. Vote on that alone then fight over the rest of the stuff later so more people don’t lose their unemployment benefits.

Greg….this was initially put forward as a standalone bill. The senate republicans shot it down twice. Olympia Snowe just said that because she was catching heat from people in her state. After Snowe said that she wanted a standalone bill, the democrats put one forward. Snowe and the other senator from maine supported the bill, but since Sen. Byrd died, the democrats lost the one vote they needed to pass it.

Go to opencongress or just type HR 4213 into google and go to the opencongress link…..

look at the votes, the democrats are voting to pass this thing. Every single republican (excluding the two from main voted against the bill on every occasion they could.

Thats why people are angry at republicans right now. They can deficit spend for the rich and for wars, but if it comes down to families living in the dark, starving or becoming homeless, there is no support.

They have shot down this bill 3 times as a standalone measure, and shot it down twice as a measure that included closing tax loopholes on the richest .5% of americans.

This wont help, but I will tell you what they are truly afraid of, get educated, know what is truly going on, do not fall for the hate tactics that is used to divide us, use Love and start by helping one another, this will truly unbalance them, this is the one and only thing they are not prepared for. The hope and change that was promised last

Big Corporates bailout was rushed thru the Senate like a goose thru a jet engine, yet the American citizenry must wait while politicians vacation for the 4th.

I am a 51 year old female, single and have a mortgage. I’ve only been unemployed once before, in 2006 but I lived on my severance pay and found a job before it ran out. In a couple weeks will be my one year anniversary of being laid off and the first time ever I collected unemployment benefits. I remember the days when I was 20 and it took no more than 2 weeks to find a good job. I always had good luck in the companies I worked for – I worked hard and got promoted. Now it means nothing because I don’t have a college education and experience in my fields count for nothing. You have a to have a college degree to become a receptionist. No one wants to train you and I’m probably discriminated because of my age. Without a job or UE, I will have to foreclose and live in my car with my cats as I have no one who could take us in. Actually before I live in my car, I will kill myself. I think every day how to do it. I will lose my health insurance next month as I will no longer be able to afford Cobra (thank God for the Cobra subsidy reduction until now). It’s times like these I wish I was a drinker.

What steams me about congress and the senate is that once they serve 4 years, they have health insurance and a pension for the REST OF THEIR LIVES! It amazes me how they can be against health insurance for people who can’t afford it. Some senators and congressmen seem to work for the people – like MN’s Franken and Klobuchar. Others seem to be not of this world – Bachmann. Others seem like they are completely out of touch with reality or are suffering from dementia. You can certainly tell that they don’t care about the people of America who are down on their luck.

The county work task program where I live apparently ran out of money right after I got laid off, so there’s no help anywhere to find a job. If I ever get one, I will forever have sympathy for those who don’t and hope they always get benefits. I think people who collect unemployment benefits should automatically get health insurance too. I know it’s too much to ask that vet care could included. :)

That map tracker that someone previously posted is simply amazing. Thanks for that.

I worked since I was 15, except when I almost lost my foot in a work related accident. I could have stayed on disability for the rest of my life. I chose to go back to work because I would have felt like a loser and felt like I was cheating myself. Now I feel like the biggest DOPE for doing so!

I too am unemployed and I have found ways to get some help by working directly with my mortgage company and the resolution specialist departments of my creditors.

I am out of benefits in 3 weeks and scared. I am very disappointed in our Senate and to anyone who thinks that this is easy and could have been personally avoided.

Victor,

I sincerely hope what you are saying is to “get educated” in understanding that there is a conquer and divide theory above us.

We need to have empathy for each other and “help each other”. That is what I’m trying to do when I post for people to call their loss mitigation departments of their mortgage company or to contact the resolution department for credit card debt and ask to be put on various pay back programs that are available from these banks.

Not sure how we asked for this or could have seen it coming. I certainly didn’t ask for this. However, I’m doing the best I can and being resourceful and very proactive on my own behalf. I constantly share my information in hopes that I can help someone else. I always say a prayer as well hoping to get my job back.

My job, you see, was outsourced to someone in Guatemala. Yep… they felt that someone in another country could document software being run right here in Indiana processing claims for state wide medicaid benefits. Imagine that….the State of Indiana awarding contracts to a company who fronts with domestic staffing and behind the scenes outsources many positions such as design, development, documentation, etc.

Have a nice night everyone. Janie

I’m so irritated. As usual politicians go off to play and screw us. My husband’s been unemployed since January. We’ve been able to squeak by on UI while he goes to college and looks for a job, but now he’s going to have to drop down (or out) and take a job making 7 bucks an hour just so we can try to keep the lights on. I don’t know what to do, everything is gone, 401K, savings, credit cards maxed…I don’t fault the Republicans for wanting to have the extension funded, but all cutting it off does is put people off of UI and onto food stamps, tanf, etc.

I have been unemployeed since Jan 09. Been going to school because I have not been able to find a job (any job I’m to proud to work at McDonalds) My UI ran out 3 weeks ago. 9 months ago I filed Chapter 13. In the 12 years I have owned my house I have never missed a payment or even been late even while unemployed. Last week my attorney asked the court to suspend my Chapter 13 payment for 3 months. I called my mortgage company to ask for a forbearance or deferment. I was told that since I was under bankruptcy that I was not eligible for either. Under Chapter 13 your house is not included meaning the house is not under bankruptcy protection. If I file Chapter 7 I would have to forfeit the house back to them but since I am trying to do the right thing and pay back the people that I owe money to the mortgage company will not work with me and since I have no income I am not eligible for loan modification. Either way shortly the bank will be taking my house away from me and my teenage daughter and throwing us into the street. 9 months ago my credit score was 750, it’s now 450 so the chances of me renting an apartment are slim to none. Especially since I have no money for a deposit much less the actual rent. I am planning to sell/pawn everything that anyone will give me a buck for and buy a tent that I want to pitch on the white house lawn. Maybe if a few million of us migrate there they might just get a clue. This country has always been supported by the middle class, so something tell me what happens when the middle class is bankrupt and living in the streets?? Will there be tent cities popping up all over America like you see in 3rd world countries?? Were people dig in dumpsters for scraps and rotten vegetables, drink dirty water and the guy next to you will slit your throat for the shoes you are wearing because they have less holes in them then the ones he has on???? Will other countries hold telethons and show videos of our starving children with bloated stomachs and flies crawling on their eyes?? May God have mercy on America for we have turned from your ways just like Sodom and Gomorrah.

Like Lynn I too have been unemployeed for nearly two years. The companies I worked for closed their doors; my husband worked for the same company for over 20 years and right after the first of the year they too closed their doors. Sho here we are the two of us enemployed. My husband and I have been very blessed with 2 healthy good children and each other. But this situation is making me very nervous. My UI benefits ran out the beginning of June, my husband just sent in his last claim form for one week of benefits. After that nothing. Our house pament is made for July, but what about August, not sure what is going to happen. In 2005 we lost our home of 15 years to a hillside failure and received nothing for it even though we carried insurance on it for all of those rears; so for the last 5 years we rentend a home that cost of $500 a month more that our house payment was; now after 5 long years we were able to buy another home, I just hope we can keep it and not loose it to the banks! Everyone is in the same boat it seems and no one in the White House seems to give a darn. Maybe they should all have their incomes taken away and let them feel the worry and concern the rest of us are feeling; maybe they’d be singing another tune after all if they wore our shoes for a while. Now I find myself having to go an apply for some type of aide just to feed our family; have never had to that before but I see no ohter choice. How can they justify taking a week long break when SO MANY PEOPLE have no income???? What do they think they will be saving by not granting these extensions, more people will have to apply for sometype of financial assistance, and as time goes on, what else do they expect people to do. We have already seen an increase in bank robberies where I live, and I’m sure that’s just going to be the tip of the iceberg; I pray it won’t get worse but reality has to come into play and I fear the worst is yet to come if they don’t do something an QUICK!!!!! It’s time to help those of us who have worked our whole lives only to get here – BROKE and NO GOOD OUTLOOK FOR JOBS – what jobs are there, the college educated are getting them before us elderly folk do.

Someone with money should file a suit against the Senate for this 60 vote deal. It is not in the Constitution! The Senate developed this. I think if it was a simple majority, like our founding fathers meant it to be, this economy would be much better! What good is it to be a majority when the minority can block you. I say, disolve the Senate and just have a House of Representatives. And yes, I know why the founding father added a Senate to the picture. I am reading the book, the “Two Republics.” The parallels are amazing between ancient Rome and the United States! The Senate back became very immoral and corrupt as it is becoming today. I pray that God would soften their hearts, Mac.

I can’t begin to explain how sad all these comments are. I have discussed this issue in my everyday life and find that many working people are unaware of this issue. Yes I relize that they are working and have a job, why should they care? Believe me, when I explain this whole thing to them they are sickened by it….they can’t believe that it is happening, and begin to realize that it could someday be them. What I am trying to say is…I don’t think enough American people are aware of the delays in voting…while the Senate is on a paid holiday. and millions of Americans are losing their homes, going hungry, losing health care…and so on…WE NEED TO GET THE WORD OUT!!!! How can we do this…Yes it is here on the internet..but only if you are looking for it….It needs to fill the evening news, like a national disaster or emergency does. Let people know what is truly going on ….I am so disgusted with America right now, that they would let this happen to their own people…It makes me so sad!!! They really don’t care in Washington!! Unbelieveable!!!!!

My heart breaks as I read these – I am hoping the extension goes through today also…love sustains us through the worst of times… pray, meditate, enjoy each other and each moment and try not to worry about tomorrow. Have faith that the criminals will be outed, the war will end and that justice will return to our nation. Love is stronger than money, food or security. Love to all of us. <3

Are you a politician who says to himself: “I will use my country for my own benefit?”
Or are you a devoted patriot, who whispers in the ear of his inner self: “I love to serve my country as a faithful servant?”

I believe what’s going on is wrong, and people should lose there jobs over this. We can not allow this to go on anymore. Pleas add this facebook account I created. It brings light to the subject. And also show’s who’d rather see us die than get back on our feet.

Two ways to find the facebook account:
1) Facebook search “Political Betrayal”
2) http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=100001347427297

The President should point out to the obstructionist Republicans the simple fact ALL PEOPLE ON UNEMPLOYMENT did not plan it this way. We have to spend this meager amount of money in order to survive. This does help the economy as no one can save money from unemployment stipidens.

its July 13th and still no word, i am about to be evicted with my daughter turning 2 on Aug 12th. i live in CA and this issue affects everyone in this nation. seriously, how dare they take that break while we are left here suffering without money for food or to pay our rents!! i am glad there are senators that do care and are working hard to get this to pass like mentioned in this article and also in CA as well. i hope this gets passed soon because i already have a notice to pay rent in 3 days or get evicted.
