The watchdog group Americans United for Separation of Church and State says it’s opening an investigation into taxpayer funds going to Bachmann and Associates, Inc., a Christian mental health counseling clinic owned by Rep. Michele Bachmann and her husband, Marcus. The Minnesota Independent first reported on the clinic’s receipt of public funds, totalling nearly $30,000, back in June.

“[W]e would like to think that Bachmann, as a member of Congress, knows better than to take state funds to run a sectarian organization,” wrote Sandhya Bathija on the group’s blog. “Catholic Charities and other groups may receive government funding, but they must keep their religious activities separate from their social services.”

She added, “It doesn’t look like the Bachmanns are doing that. If the clinic wants state funds, it must perform secular social services – not proselytize or discriminate in hiring. It’s as simple as that.”

According to Jason Wilson, a legal intern with Americans United, the group is investigating “Bachmann and Associates’ funding and how they receive their funds from the state and/or federal government.”

Bachmann thinks we already have a de facto state religion, no matter what the first amendment says. What are the chances she would make an exception to her core beliefs and respect Separation when it’s against her religion?

The Snowball gets better odds.

If the democrat party insists on being the anti-God party, well then you go right ahead.

I just wish more of your politicians would make your beliefs known to the general public and openly ridicule Christians as much as their supporters do.

The “democrat party” doesn’t need it’s politicians to openly ridicule christians who believe in a fairy tale. You do a good enough job of that on your own, ie: Ted Haggard, Larry Craig, pervo who gets his kicks from Rentboy, Mark Foley, David Vitter, the Catholic Church. Need I go on?? Actually, I can’t remember all the perves that claim to be “christian”. There’s too many to keep track of you all.

The Bachmann’s have a “Mental Health” care facility?? This might be the first mental health clinic on Earth where the owners ARE the patients. Of course all Christians should be institutionalized. They believe in red horny toads with goat heads and pitchforks, humans with dove wings and “talking” evil snakes. I used to believe in the Easter Bunny too but reality set in when I was 7 years old..

Too bad your president isn’t as honest as you are, marcus, and say those things in a speech.

What are you talkin’ about Dennis? Obama is a christian (remember Reverend Write??) He isn’t a tongue waggler neo- freak like Bachmann is but that really doesn’t matter .. The best thing we can do as a country is to respect the First Amendment and KEEP RELIGION OUT OF POLITICS.. If the Wal*Church lobby wants to fund a political candidate then we should strip their tax exempt status.. Why should the Corporation of Christian Conservatives(LLC) get a tax break?? Oh yeah that’s right Ultra rich corperations deserve a tax cut because they are better then us.. Praise Jesus! Praise BP! Praise EXXON! Praise Wal*Church! Praise Capitalism and the greedy pigs that destroy life.. Praise MONEY.. lol Christianity is so EVIL!

I know that most democrats believe what you do, marcus. I just wish more of the general public was aware of it.

By the way, the first amendment doesn’t separate religion from politics but I understand why you think that.

This is a God-fearing nation, marcus, founded on judeo-christian principles, using the bible and invoking God in our legal oaths, invoking God in our pledge of allegiance, banning most commerce on Sundays, and celebrating Christ’s birthday as a national holiday.

So any religious person who votes democrat is like a chicken voting for Colonel Sanders.

Uhm Dennis.. “Government SHALL NOT Respect the establishment of Religion”.. It’s the very first sentence of the very First Amendment.. Why??? Because there were many people moving from the religiously oppressed countries of Europe .. I guess those crazy European immigrants moved here because they didn’t want to get burned at the stake by the evil Christian Oligarchs .. The only reason you need to “Fear God” is because Fear gives humanity the reason NOT TO REASON.. Jefferson, Franklin were closer to being Agnostic then to be Christian.. Jefferson and Madison hated each other because of their religious viewpoint and it’s roll in Government.. This is as much a Christian Nation as it is a Muslim Nation or a Hindu Nation or if your like me an Agnostic Nation..

“Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof”

The Founders didn’t want a nation that had an established state religion, like the Church of England, where government told people which church to attend. But since God is mentioned four times in the Declaration of Independence, I doubt if the signers, including Jefferson, were all that agnostic.

And when Mohammid’s birthday is a national holiday, I’ll agree with your last point.

In religion and politics people’s beliefs and convictions are in almost every case gotten at second-hand, and without examination, from authorities who have not themselves examined the questions at issue but have taken them at second-hand from other

I agree with Bob Saget so lets not take this knowledge that we have been given as completely true just based on what one lowly inter has found.

Dear Dennis: Sonny, you appear to have a persecution complex that is not a good thing. I’m a devout Christian and I do not mock good Christians. That being said however, I mock those who pretend to be Christians and then do just the opposite. They, in my mind, are far worse than those who have never taken up the cross. I detest those who have to shout out their “Christianess” so everybody can hear. Just live it honestly and then we’ll talk about it. I think the Bible says it best when it’s classifies them as “whited sepulcheres.”

As a person who tries to follow the Christian faith, I think this discussion is missing the point. Bachmann consistently complains about BIG government and the socialism of the current administration and yet she takes farm subsidies and now their family business receives public funds? She truly represents the standard line of the GOP the party where they want everyone to pull themselves up by their bootstraps—they just fail to mention how often we (including us Dems!)helped them out. Don’t get distracted by the religious b.s., hair and makeup and general nuttiness—concentrate on what REALLY happening here.

Whenever I hear anyone use the Rush Limbaugh/Ann Coulter code expression “Democrat party” I know that they are among the most uninformed people in America. They also don’t know anything about the separation of church and state. This country was not set up as a theocracy. It is not a Christian nation. As a Catholic from the south, I can attest to the fact that even among fellow Christians, some Christians so distrusted other Christians that they were sure that John Kennedy would have a hot line installed like Batman and Commisioner Gordon straght to the Pope. Kennedy was able to reassure Americans that his religion was not in conflict with his duty as President. Michele Bachman and her religious zealot anti gay hypocrite husband cannot and in fact take money from the federal government to pursue a religious cult mental heath clinic to to turn gays into straight born agains. I wouldn’t trust michele Bachman any more than any other religious cult leader. I would like all the ex patients of Michele and her quack mail order Doctor husband to speak up and tell the truth about these quack religious Jim Jones cult leaders and make sure this dangerous zealot doesn’t have any leadership responsibility in this country.

In my opinion, Michele Bachmann’s just another whack-job, fundamental extremist; playing God and using the system, inappropriately, for her personal gains. Can you imagine her as president of the United States? Wasn’t 8 years of the Cheney/Bush Dictatorship bad enough? Actually, I hope the Republicans nominate her, as doing so will be a sure win for Obama. As far as Marcus Bachmann’s concerned, I can see why the whole gay issue’s a threat to him, as he’s probably in the closet and running from who he really is, gay, or why would being gay be such an issue for him. People who are at peace with themselves typically aren’t concerned with who others are, unless they’re running from themselves and need a diversion to hide their truth. To Michele and Marcus Bachmann, quit playing God, get help and pray your hate away.

Assuming that Dr. Bachmann sees patients in his clinic, and a’suming that he is licensed in the State of Minnesota, then if they run the clinic as other mental health clinics are, with each patient visit a diagnostic code is a’ssigned based on the DSM, (the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of the American Psychological A’ssociation). and based on that code, and the length of the visit, a billing statement is sent to the patient, and/or their insurance company, Medicare, or Medicaid.
If Bachmann is sending bills to those people and insurance entities NOT based on established “safe and effective” treatments and treatment plans, and objective established diagnostic codes, (and there IS NO CODE for a condition of “homosexuality”), then this consti’tutes health care fraud. It is also an issue for investigation of whether insurance companies are acting in collusion with these fraudulent practices, and reimbursing the clinic for treatment that is not accepted as safe and effective and meeting the community standards in psychiatric care.
