I am 55, have a masters degree and was laid off nearly one year ago. I have applied for over 250 jobs I knew I was qualified for and would be good at. I do not even receive requests for interviews. I am not a deadbeat, I have worked hard all my life and work hard still to keep busy but no income means no means of support for my son and I. I even offered to prune shrubbery at our local grocery for money to pay my internet bill so I can continue to look for work. I was turned away.

For the first time in my life I am embarrassed to be an American. I watched with dismay the 4th of July party at the White House, the fancy clothes, the expensive jewelery and wondered how much that cost...plus a big party afterward. Private jets, expensive luncheons, extravagant vacations, and luxury are enjoyed by our national public 'servants' while people steal like Sarah (above comment) to eat. It is shameful and it is an apostasy.
The Europeans in centuries back had what was called serfdom. How is that different than capitalism today? We the poor hungry masses do all the work and give the bulk of our labor to the elite.
The chasm of disparities in incomes grows so wide we will indeed one day tumble into it as a nation. If I were the paranoid type I would say the poor are being culled from society. We are seen as a burden and yet we and our families are the ones who are the backbone of the country. We are the masses of consumers who buy the oil and gas that makes stockholders wealthy and we are the workers who keep industrialization alive.

Capitalism is becoming a monster that is consuming our lives and our children who by the millions now live hungry and destitute on the streets.
I am ashamed of our nation's leaders. If they are our brightest and best we are in deep trouble.

Such a sad and needless state of affairs propagated by greed and corruption. Shame on them on.

It is easy for the Senate whether they be Republicans or Democrats to play politics with peoples lives. There are people out there who want to work, but can't find jobs. In the mean time well fed and housed politicians in Washing ton are playing politics with these poor peoples lives.
They make me sick. I wonder if when they are on there lunch break in Washington while they eat there fancy lunches they are thinking about the families who don't have any mony coming in now to feed their children? I doubt it very much. A full gut doesn't feel any guilt about starving people.

I steal food from grocery stores so I can stay alive. I'm very depressed and desperate. I never thought I would have to resort to stealing and feel very guilty. There is not much help for a single childless woman.

Nothing for the Long-Term Unemployed who have been looking for jobs the LONGEST! (We are called the 99ers) Many of us are 45 and older. Now considered unemployable. There was a Senator on Fox News a few days ago who thought it would HELP our nation to up the SSI age to 70. This he said because people live longer now and should be able to WORK longer. I mean, this guy was a Senator! (can't remember his name) This is how out of touch he is with the American Citizens! Our jobs were stolen from us and if you are a baby-boomer and this happened to you YOU ARE NOW UNEMPLOYABLE! And now Congress wants to keep our SSI too! I'm sitting screaming at the TV screen because THIS GUY HAS A JOB AS A SENATOR AND DOES NOT EVEN KNOW WHAT'S GOING ON AROUND HIM! He said "Hey! I'm 70 and I LOVE working!" Unbelievable, huh folks! If I had my job of 18 years back, I'd work till I was 80! My mother did! Kept her young. Problem is, NO JOBS IDIOT SENATOR MAN! Made me Soooooooooooooooooooooooooooo Maddddddddddddddddddddddddddd!
