Koering subject of GOP ‘witch hunt,’ according to Republican leaders

The Republican Party of Minnesota is investigating one of its own, and it has GOP leaders a bit uneasy. The party sent a letter to the Morrison County Sheriff asking for records of 911 calls and law enforcement visits to Sen. Paul Koering’s residence. But, as the Brainerd Dispatch notes, Koering actually lives in Crow Wing County. Koering, the state’s only elected gay Republican, is facing a tough primary challenge from GOP-endorsed Paul Gazelka.

According to the Dispatch, RPM’s research director, Aaron Cocking, sent a letter to the sheriff asking for “each law enforcement and emergency response.”

But GOP leaders aren’t thrilled with the move. Most who spoke with the Dispatch were critical of the strategy.

“I’m disappointed with that kind of activity (by the party),” said Senate Minority Leader David Senjem. “I’ve known Paul for eight years. I can not in my wildest dreams imagine that Paul Koering has anything in his record that would be at all interesting. It’s probably as boring as mine. I’m simply not one to condone witch hunts.”

Koering’s opponent said he knew nothing of RPM’s investigation. “I’m not even sure what they’re looking for,” Gazelka said. “I don’t think they need to do that.”

Koering has seen his share of controversy. Earlier this year, he invited a porn actor to dinner where he allegedly discussed his position on same-sex marriage. The actor said Koering supported it; Koering later said he didn’t.

[...] Republican Party of Minnesota is investigating one of its own,” begins the Minnesota Independent report on Sen. Paul Koering. But let’s face it: he’s gay. Isn’t this why? Why the heck [...]

Why they’re going after Koering is obvious. Why would any gay man be a Republican? They don’t want you!

Maybe he wants to live in a free society whether he’s liked or not.

They’re going after him because he’s not the GOP endorsed candidate. The fact that he’s gay, gives them some ammunition, but if he wasn’t, they’d find something else to use against him.

Looks like it backfired on the endorsed candidate.

I wonder by what legal authority they are requesting 911 records.
What moral authority?
Accusations?
Suspicions?

The fact that the request comes from a researcher and not an ethics committee says all too plainly that this is pure gutter politics.

I wish I expected better from the republicans.

Yeah, ZeraLee, I suppose if the party was looking to uncover embarrassing information that could be used against their candidate in a political campaign, they should have just used the Matt Entenza method and hired a private investigator.
