Jumping on board with a handful of Senate Republicans, including Iowa’s Chuck Grassley, Gov. Tim Pawlenty tells Bloomberg News that he is in favor of changing the 14th Amendment of the Constitution to prevent the children of undocumented immigrants from getting automatic citizenship if they are born in United States.

From Bloomberg:

“We’re the only, or one of the few, developed nations in the world that allows somebody to come here illegally, give birth to a child, and then have the child be a legal citizen of our country,” Pawlenty said. Referring to legal rulings that have upheld that provision, he said, “The only way to trump the court’s decision is to amend the Constitution.”

What a complete asshat. So he wants to change a founding principle of the American democratic system… one I might add that gave his immigrant forefathers children American citizenship. Do you think it might be a change to make it easier to strip YOU of your citizenship might be his next “good” idea? Pawlenty is a pandering fool who even Republicans know is only ambition in a bad haircut.

When the 14th Amendment was written, it was not intended to apply to foreigners, but to newly freed slaves and their children.

“Parkland Memorial Hospital delivers more of those babies than any other hospital in the state. Last year at Parkland, 11,071 babies were born to women who were noncitizens, about 74 percent of total deliveries. Most of these women are believed to be in the country illegally.”

On the RNC web site the republicans tout the 14th Amendment as one of their signature accomplishments, so I find it highly ironic that they now want to destroy what they say they value so highly.

No amendments will be changed, repealed or added. All the bluster about repealing and altering amendments is just distraction. Doesn’t anyone remember the ERA? Apparently, there is widespread ignorance in Congress as well as in the general population along with our rat-faced governor regarding what it takes to get an amendment added to the Constitution. An amendment cannot be repealed, a new one must be added with wording that nullifies the one they don’t like. Does anyone really think that they could get any of this garbage to be passed by both houses of Congress and then ratified by enough states to make the amendment a reality?
