SD56 GOP on Dem women: ‘Who let the dogs out?’
Tuesday, August 17, 2010 at 8:41 am

Screengrab from the video currently on the GOP's SD56 website
Here’s the kind of discourse that Republicans in state Senate District 56 are interested in: The party website is now running a video about how “hot” Republican women are compared to “Democrat [sic] women.” To the strains of Tom Jones’ “She’s a Lady,” the video runs through a series of photos of GOP women in bikinis, evening gowns and, in Sarah Palin’s case, Spandex. Then the Dems: women like Rosie O’Donnell, Janet Reno (pictured), Nancy Pelosi and Madeleine Albright — set to the song, “Who Let The Dogs Out?”
Update: I’ve emailed the two women endorsed by the SD56 Republicans, state House candidates Kathy Lohmer (56A) and Andrea Kieffer (56B). I’ll publish any comments I receive. I’ve also contacted webmaster Randy Brown for his comment (the post in question was bylined “Randy”).
Update: Candidate Andrea Kieffer, calling the video “juvenile,” says she’s requesting the video be removed. Brown, the site’s webmaster, says he published the video. Why? “[I]ts only intention was to bring a smile to a few peoples faces, and possibly irritate a few others. Is it fair? Does that matter? It wasn’t intended to be fair. It was intended to be funny.”
Update: The video has been removed. Here’s a screengrab of it in place.
Update: GOP’s Lohmer calls for resignation of SD56 webmaster over video.
Update: Mark Drake, communications director for the Republican Party of Minnesota, took issue with this story’s headline, which originally began with the phrase, “Minn. GOP on Dem women.” He said the state party had nothing to do with the video, which was posted independently on the district site. “It’s wrong and inappropriate,” he said of the video. I’ve amended the headline to be more accurate.

Do you think the two women they’ve endorsed will repudiate this?

Not that it makes the posting any less tacky, but at least it doesn’t appear that someone from MN took the time to create the video. It seems to be some guy from Virginia. http://www.youtube.com/user/chesclyde

Yeah, I realize that. By posting the video, SD56 Republicans are endorsing it.

And so the question is? I don’t think the women are dogs, they’re people. As to what’s a lady, it’s probably as subjective as what is a gentleman. Everybody’s got their own opinion, I hope. Pretty effective video, though. Someone’s got to do a little work on their public image. And that’s not a good picture of Janet Reno, I covered her at the girl scout convention and she’s much more attractive than that (she said a girl scout would be president).
Comment posted August 17, 2010 @ 11:01 am
Not, of course, that anyone’s appearance, good or bad, male or female, makes the slightest bit of difference in their ability to serve with integrity, honest and intelligence.
Guess I’d be pretty embarrassed if this were on any website with which I were connected, just sayin’.

So, Steve, as an Independence Party candidate running against two women, do you think it’d be fair for you to judge Teresa Collett and Betty McCollum purely on your personal assessment of their attractiveness?
Comment posted August 17, 2010 @ 11:52 am
Schmelzer, as usual, for the WIN.
This video is effective for the district, all right. It’s made them look extremely dumb, which is a wonderful thing when you’re a Democrat. Like me.

Oh, hi, Paul. Just to be clear, I said, what’s a lady is subjective, and in my subjective opinion, both Betty McCollum and Teresa Collett are ladies. And I think I’m a gentleman. I frankly think it would be pretty stupid to judge them on their personal attractiveness, although that is no doubt a part of every judgment. I’m not actually judging them, I’m evaluating their positions and their record. I do, however, also want to say that I find both Sarah Palin and Michele Bachmann to be personally attractive, and I’m sorry that so many people dislike them for this. Look at what happened to Sarah Palin when she stepped up to take McCain’s offer to run for Vice President. Did Betty McCollum step in and say let’s behave like ladies and gentlemen here? Nope. Didn’t Democrat darling boy David Letterman say Palin looked like she’s dressed like a “slutty flight attendant” or something like that? And I work with flight attendants and can tell you they do not appreciate that. Did Obama not say something about she looked like a pig? Nonetheless, I don’t appreciate the tone of the attacks on these Democrat women. Even if the sexist attacks first came from the Democrats when McCain nominated Palin.

My personal opinion is that your personal appearance does reflect your values, your mood, your attitudes and many important virtues. I really think that’s the argument here. I don’t think we need Republicans in bathing suit photos, but they were in shape and that’s attractive. I do think that those Democrat women were caught in some pretty unattractive poses, and that does reflect something about their character. If you put these images in television commercial buys this fall, no doubt their personal appearance would have an impact on how their character and abilities were viewed. And that should tell you something. I try to keep a level head, a focus on the importance of the election and the governance of which I want to be a part, make sure I stay in good condition and attentive, and don’t act ridiculous in public, like some of the subjects in the video for some reason appear to be. Like I said, I liked Janet Reno, although she made some terrible mistakes, and would not judge her on personal appearance, and actually, in person, she’s quite attractive and healthy.
Comment posted August 17, 2010 @ 12:44 pm
I want to add on Janet Reno, I believe she had some kind of Parkinson’s disease, something that made her shake. So if that is contributing to her personal appearance, it would be extremely unfortunate and improper to ridicule her in any way for that. I want to add that I personal like many Democrats. I just think they’re wrong, wrong, wrong in their leadership decisions, which is why I am running against Betty McCollum. You might want to contrast our positions on abortion and pro-life issues, too.

OK, you probably posted a comment you wish you hadn’t. We all do. Remember the first rule about finding yourself in a hole.

Eric, the issue was the value of the YouTube ad. I can’t remember the post you might be talking about, but what I am saying is the Democrats started this war on women’s images against the Republican stars, and now someone is turning the camera on the Democrats.
While I don’t call people “dogs”, I think the personalities displayed in some of the pictures of the Democrats reveal that they don’t quite have the temperament to lead, and I think voters will be affected.
I think Schmelzer is implying that the video itself is out of bounds, politically incorrect. But I’m saying, I’m stipulating McCollum and Collett are ladies, that’s not an issue in my campaign, and I’m saying the pictures of Democrat raise the issue of essentially what kind of women are associated with Republicans versus Democrats, and they’re doing it at a very gut level, as you see when you view it. So it’s effective. But I guess it’s politically unacceptable to criticize women. So how are we going to vote if we can’t compare and criticize?? It’s like saying if you criticize ObamaCare you are criticizing his race.
I think the ad in my district would compare McCollum v. Collett on their personality and character, not me versus them because of gender differences. I don’t think it really applies here and in fact is not being targeted at this district.

Are you serious? So, basically you’re saying it’s OK to boil down a woman’s temperament and ability to lead based on their physical appearance and whether or not they’re aware of their “good side?” I realize America is a pretty looks obsessed culture, but the blatant objectification in those statements is just gross.
“Like I said, I liked Janet Reno, although she made some terrible mistakes, and would not judge her on personal appearance, and actually, in person, she’s quite attractive and healthy.”
Oh, and you realize that you totally admitted to judging a woman based on her personal appearance in your very first sentence in your 12:04 comment, right? Maybe you should just quit digging before you hit magma, Steve.

The video was done with malice, and intent to degrade.
Randy Brown has a schoolyard bully’s sense of humor. It reminds me of the racist pictures that republicans were passing around after Obama was elected, or the fund raising materials that dissed their own supporters.
I guess when you turn radical, you develop a perverse sense of humor.

Like it matters what people look like.
What I’d like to do is see into their heads and find out what candidates really think and really plan to do.
An attractive face won’t get them anywhere with me. Even an attractive platform with a stand on issues that’s the same as mine won’t get my confident vote.
I notice that after they are elected “my” candidates jump spryly off their campaign platform and onto a platform in which the only issue is them: getting reelected and making as much money and having as many freebie offsites and hiring as many friends and relatives as possible.

Why is this so difficult? Hillary ran for President. There was not this kind of low-class attack on her (well, she looks pretty goofy in this clip, but we’ve all had those photos with funny faces). As SOON as Sarah Palin was out, Dem favorite David Letterman called her a slut, darling Barack Obama called her a pig. So now someone comes back with beautiful shots of Repub women, VERY unflattering shots of Dem women. And now we have what, mother superior here telling the boys that unflattering shots of women cannot be shown because they are the new sheriff in town? Get out of here. So you Alie and ZeraLee don’t believe in free speech really, do you? I don’t admit to judging by personal appearance, but I do see personal appearance, don’t you? And personal appearance is often a reflection of character. But, one needs discernment in evaluating personal appearance.
What I will admit is that at least one of the Republican shots was pretty racy, and people often object to that. But the shot with Gretchen Carlson (I think that’s her) seems to have been from swimsuit competition in a miss something pageant. You could have put Sarah Palin’s in there with the swimsuit competition too because she was miss something too.

People who take care of themselves and develop an attractive look show more respect for themselves and others than those who do not. I think it is very nice that Republican men take pride in and brag on their women who reciprocate by being the best that they can.
Sure beats victimology, in my mind. Note that they also have accomplishments as in Stanford grad Miss America Carlson or successful tax lawyer Michelle Bachman

Claire,
Do you think that, from the video, Rosie O’Donnell has a hairy back due to lack of concern for her hygiene? Would more time at the makeup counter help Janet Reno improve her genetics? (Notice that those clever Republicans photoshopped chest hair on Ms. Reno, a Cornell grad). I see from your Facebook profile that you don’t offer any public pictures. Could you kindly share an image of yourself so we, the teeming masses, can judge how well you’ve “developed an attractive look”?

It is true, many Republican women are physically very attractive, even beautiful in appearance. However, what I have found in my experience is that when I get to know these women, I fond that the inner view does not match the brochure. Invariably, I find that the when I see the true inner person, it is not unlike the feeling of finding a 3 month old strawberry that fell behind the clutter in the fridge, and is now a lump of mold.

This was SO insulting I don’t know where to begin! The women portrayed in the beginning of this aren’t all Republicans and what some of them were displaying had nothing to do with their minds which I completely understand since because, as the song you chose shows how the whole party views a woman’s role on your testosterone pickled minds!
The second part of your video showed beautiful women in their most unflattering poses and women who are there for their minds and its hard work hammering through a devout Republican’s thick skull to allow it to take in new information.
You showed Helen Thomas as a Democrat! Why? Simply because she’s not a pretty woman? You showed Kathy Ireland and Heather Locklear as Republicans and NOBODY over 50 without plastic surgery as a Republican! Democrats have more important things to do…. and so should YOU!

Just one more example of “The Emperor Wears No Clothes”! Lord, but the photoshop of Rosie as KSM; and Janet Reno as Time’s “Man of the Year” are positively PRICELESS! Thank you Minnesota GOP for this video spoof (with the operative noun being “spoof”, you humorless, political twits! The truth sure hurts, especially when you’re a Dem-fem.

Yes, Sara Palin looks good in Spandex. And the breasts on many of the other Republican ladies are large. I especially appreciate the Republican Lady that exhibits her political views while wearing a bikini. Classy. However shallow it may seem when we use our good looks to define ourselves, being an attractive women inevitably gets the most attention. And to the man who was innovative enough to use this gimmick to promote a woman’s political credentials, kudos to him. If only he could persuade these gentile Republican women to pose naked, I’m fairly sure the admiration of their lady-like qualities would increase.

I mean, after all, besides religion, Afirmative Action is pretty much all about how a person looks…”race, color, religion, sex or national origin”. The Dims use Affirmative Action to put people in various positions BECAUSE OF THEIR LOOKS!

Bonnie, that is classic sexism. But sexism is okay if it’s for the feminist revolution, I suppose. Well, the feminist revolution should not have attacked Sarah Palin, Michele Bachmann (who I’m sure dress much more modestly than you do), and the others. Michelle Malkin looks attractive there, too. They say loud and clear, there is nothing wrong with being attractive and having a brain, too.

There seems to be a social message here. I never listened to this song about “dogs”, but the singer seems to say “Who put a woman in front and a man behind?” In that case, it seems to talk about a rejection of women trying to displace men from the leadership positions. No doubt many of the Republican women would object to this idea if asked. But intelligent people would not want to destroy the social order, just to break a “glass ceiling.” I’ll be interested to see if Palin and Bachmann respond to this and what they say. I’m sure they can speak for themselves, and don’t need these posters to speak for them, or David Letterman either.
Oh, and yes, I think having a brain does make a person more attractive. That the whole message of the video, in my opinion. I like it better each time I view it. And this issue goes to the heart of the election. Who let the dogs out is about the 2008 election results, not about women. We need to get the dogs back and take our country back.

Forget for a moment how utterly stupid, sexist and juvenile this ‘contest’ is. The fact of the matter is that in strictly external beauty, there is no contest. Exhibit A: Hollywood. I’d put the right’s middle-aged, botoxed beauties up against dozens of gorgeous card-carrying Hollywood Dem’s any day. Here’s just a shortlist:
Charlize Theron v. Michele Bachmann
Alyssa Milano v. Sarah Palin
Demi Moore v. Dr. Laura
Cameron Diaz v. Ann Coulter
Vanessa Carlton v. Fox News Interchangeable Blond 1
Jennifer Aniston v. Fox News Interchangeable Blond 2
Heather Graham v. Fox News Interchangeable Blond 3
Susan Sarandon v, etc., etc.
Reese Witherspoon
Nicole Kidman
Kirsten Dunst
Jennifer Lopez
Natalie Portman
Why is it that the right–both male and female–seem perpetually stuck in middle school? Good grief, grow up.
