You can click on the image above, or here, to visit the National Hurricane Center’s tracking map for Hurricane Gustav, which is currently on a path that will lead it to landfall on the Louisiana coastline west of New Orleans sometime early Monday morning.

One critical question to watch: How far west of New Orleans? The worst winds, storm surges and rainfall occur to the east of a hurricane’s eye, raising the wrenching possibility that the worst of Gustav could score a more direct hit on the city than Katrina did. According to the latest NHC advisory, issued at 1 p.m. Central time today, Gustav is expected to bring 12-16 foot storm surges, though they could be higher if the storm is at Category 4 when it reaches land. The worst of Katrina’s surges reached 20 feet.
