MPR: Bachmann ad wrong on corn dog tax
Wednesday, September 01, 2010 at 1:57 pm
Rep. Michele Bachmann’s latest ad featuring “Jim the Election Guy” — which criticizes DFL opponent Tarryl Clark for raising taxes on corn dogs, deep-fried bacon and beer — did not pass muster with Minnesota Public Radio’s fact-checking feature PoliGraph. “It’s true that Clark voted for a sales tax increase on beer,” said PoliGraph. “But Bachmann’s ad is wrong when it comes to corn dogs and bacon: Clark never voted to increase taxes on either.”
Though Clark did vote for tax increases on alcohol, those bills were vetoed so fairgoers do not pay an extra tax on beer, Poligraph notes.
As for the corn dogs and bacon:
In 2008, Clark voted for a constitutional amendment that would have raised the sales tax by 3/8 of 1 percent to protect water and land — commonly known as the Legacy Amendment. After the Legislature passed it, voters approved the tax increase.
So, it’s wrong to say that Clark voted for the sales tax increase. Rather, she voted to let Minnesotans vote on the Legacy Amendment.
In other words, Minnesotans voted for their own tax increase on corn dogs and bacon — and by a large margin for a constitutional amendment: 56 percent.

Franken’s 2008 campaign and “victory” proved one thing: lies and cheating are ohhhhhhhhteyyyyyy.

It’s only a matter of time before democrats really do start taxing corn dogs. The mentality that fatty foods should have a sin tax attached is spreading among the left. I’m expecting them to justify all kinds of sin taxes now that the democrat’s health insurance deformation has passed. Democrats must be voted against across the state.

The critical comments of the right which is totally fixated on abortion, guns and taxes, means they cannot grasp the idea that things like “corn dogs” and all other prepared foods are taxed and have been for a long time. If you buy unprepared food in the grocery store, that is not taxed. It is “food.” If you go to a restaurant or bakery, or. . . . the State Fair, and buy “prepared food” you will pay a tax. That has been the case for many years long before Tarry Clark took office and long before Michele Bachmann took office. I don’t recall Bachmann sponsoring any bills suggesting these taxes be repealed.
And “Jim the Election Guy” clearly insinuates if not outright claims that Tarry Clark instituted a tax on beer. Are Bachmann’s supporters so stupid as not to know that beer too has been taxed for a long time?
Hopefully, Bachmann’s incompetence in handling this ad campaign will presage a final collapse of her officeholding career.

Democrats have voted against baby brains so calling their legislative atrocities “sin taxes” is mistaken at best. DFLs hate human life and their every action reflects such.

I live in her district, and I honestly don’t know what it would take for an opponent of Michele’s to win. The people that voted that whackaloon into office don’t know any better. They fall for her lies hook line and sinker. I suppose if you were an even better liar and whackaloon you could beat Michele, but would that make you a better choice? I think not.
Better Michele stay in office and act as the poster child for what is wrong with the Republican party. Seriously, as long as the Democrats stay in control of the house, what harm can she do?

I wonder if she will ever get past the “tax and spend” mantra and express a thought that originated in the current century.
The republicans have been driving tax increases for years, they just come in the form of fees – when they don’t get other units of government to do their dirty work for them, like property taxes.
Taxpayers get billed for Bachmann self-promotion:

Bachmann squanders tax dollars on herself while Clark cuts her own salary. The sad thing is that Bachmann’s supporters have been programmed to stop thinking and start reacting whenever they hear the “tax and spend” mantra. Pavlov would be impressed.

Lying for Jesus, 24/7.
“Do not bear false witness against your neighbor”.
See that on your Ten Commandments poster, Michele?
Jesus is so proud of you.

I love how Mat and Jimmy, with their messiah caught redhanded lying, trot out the conservative tactic of quickly changing the subject. Nice try guys.

Wearing the Twins Jersey, State Fair ad, methinks that Rep. Bachmann is protesting a bit too much that she is a Minnesotan. Another tack, would be for her to spend some time in the state, talk to some Minnesotans, listen…
