All weekend long the police talked of the “criminal anarchists,” groups allegedly hellbent on inciting riots and causing destruction during the RNC. Now today, the national media has used images of smashed windows–there was a Macy’s window smashed, windows of a cop car broken when a cop wasn’t in it, and a bank window smashed, I saw it happen–as proof of a bunch of protesters gone wild.
We followed this group for nearly the entire day, a small faction made up of a total of 60 or so Funk the War and Food Not Bombs anti-war protesters and some self-proclaimed “anarchists” who said they weren’t part of any group. (The Food Not Bombs house was one of the homes raided on Saturday.) There was threats of tear gas, and pepper spray used on us more than once. Around 20 people had to have their eyes cleaned out. There was intimidation on every corner and from ramps of parking garages, and one cop wrestling someone to the ground. As cops and the mainstream media would tell it, it was out of control. But for the “anarchists,” it was hardly anarchy.
For one thing, despite the media fearmongering and the ominous presence of riot cops–some aiming tear-gas guns at protesters from garages–and the 12 cop cars following us down the street at one point, for the most the 60 or so protesters in this group were fairly benign, though there were about 15 of them whose worse crime committed was pulling newspaper boxes into the street, and in one case, a Dumpster. When that happened, about five people in the group stopped to clean up the trash that had fallen to the street.
On one street, a few people threw down caltrops to block traffic. One kid who looked under 20 years old jumped on top of a cop car that broke through the pedestrian barrier. Another two smashed windows of a Macy’s, First National Bank, and unoccupied cop car. However, this was the work of maybe five or so people in the breakaway protest group.
Yet the media headlines say that “anarchists” marred peaceful protests. They broke away and “resisted police.” They caused protests to turn violent. To be sure, a handful certainly weren’t always peaceful or obeying the law. But there was also less than 40 of them in the entire group at many points, and when windows started to get smashed by a lone few, yells came out from the group such as, “What are you doing!? You idiot! How is that going to send a message?” Anarchy and mass chaos? Hardly.

The idea of using pepper spray on peaceful protestors makes me sick. Is this still America? We have a media hyping fear of anarchists (code word for peaceful hippie kids and other non-conformists in most cases) and cops roughing people up. That's fascism, folks, not the way we're supposed to behave in an open society. The Ramsey County Sheriff has brought shame on your community. The only violence perpetrated at the RNC was done by reactionary law enforcement, not people using their Constitutional right to protest and free assembly. Welcome to the Bush police state, brought to you by the Republican National Convention. I can't wait for these bastards to be voted out of office.

Does anyone know of any links to international media coverage of these incidents in St. Paul? If so, please post them.
It is time to call for international solidarity.
The U.S. media was salivating over the possibility of large protests in China during the Olympics and was very disappointed when it did not occur. Now here we have the protests against the US (an imperialist aggressor and human rights abuser abroad and an increasingly repressive police state at home) and its two party ruling class consensus and what do we get? No coverage.
Either we will descend into the silence of fear and fascist repression or we will stand up and deal with it.
If you have not seen the democracy “This is What Democracy Looks Like” (you can order it through those mail video rental companies or buy it on line), please see it. It shows from the inside out what these events are really all about and how the police and media really work.
And of course, see “V for Vendetta”.

What happened to the 50,000 demonstators? Pathetic showing. Apparently the protestors and anarchists don't represent the views of most working Americans. Cops 1, Anarchists 0. Its funny how everybody cries about their Constitutional rights being trampled but what happened to The RNC's rights to express their views and hold their own convention? The hypocrisy among the left is amazing!

Nazi scum should be resisted. St Paul is a city of shame and failure now, famous for cops beating women and gassing children. Garrison Keillor will no doubt have some interesting things to say about the Schweinen of St Paul and how special they are there. Do they wear their riot gear to look macho at the covered dish and the fish fry? How does that work in Lake Woebegone?

As a paralegal and as a marcher on Labor day, I am swamped with calls and my bosses (3 attorneys) are amazed at how the police were allowed to step over so many Constitutional, city, state laws, rights and ordinances; yes, it was a short victory for the suppression of freedom of speech and right to assembly–
But here's the good news; people will lose jobs, demotions will happen, bad pr and press will happen, we will make it happen as my bosses have a 95% prediction rate on how their cases go–they call this a slam dunk and again, are surprised on how blatant it was. Our war will be won. Congrats.

Did something happen to the RNC's right to hold a convention? I must have missed it. Did they get pepper-sprayed? hauled off to a detention center? Please, enlighten us.

Molly – any chance you and Tim Roman might be charged with aiding and abetting in the incitement of a riot and destruction of property – or are you cooperating to help prosecute these guys?

As I've said before, I disagree with both the actions of the protestors that caused damage and disruption just for the sake of diong so, and I disagree with the overzealous police response.
I wonder how does the heavy police presence escalate the situation? Being fully decked out and quick to retaliate only inspires the jackasses to try harder and endangers innocent folks along the way.
Thanks, Molly, for the perspective. I appreciated the tweets yesterday, too.

Hypocrisy among the left? I painted my home for most of the day and then walked to an outdoor “Take Back Labor”concert with my wife and two sons, ages 9 and 15. Afterwards we went home, where my wife and I got the kids ready for school, and prepared ourselves to go to work in the morning. I AM THE LEFT. A presumption that I cry about my rights or obstruct convention goers is ignorant, and moreover disrepectful. See you at the ballot box.

Anarchy doesn't mean smashing windows, it doesn't mean that you cant collaborate with others in mutual respect. Chaos and anarchy actually aren't synonymous! I would recommend to the “writer” of this article as well as many readers, judging by some of the comments, to know what you're talking about before you let your fingers fall upon the keyboard.

Groups like the RNC Welcoming Committee are nothing more than a training ground for homegrown terrorists in their larval stages. When you are breaking the windows of business that just happen to be near the RNC, but not actually associated in any way, you are just committing felony vandalism. I am all for peaceful protesting. That's everyone's right, but these people are felons and need to be dealt with severly

Democrats (like yourself) suck! Read a book before you comment.

most of the windows smashed were donors to the RNC. http://www.msp2008.com/donors

they’re not real anarchist, real anarchist would have protested at the DNC, because democrats promote large government, a real anarchist would promote the republican candidate, and when in office make sure he that he makes small government decisions

Anarchists were at the Dnc many people attended both conventions. dont make assumptions. a real anarchist wouldnt promote any candiadate, the presidency is not based on consensus, non hierarchical decentralized autonmous egalitarian mututal aid, collective based systems. its based on greed capitalism authority and controll whatever party one identifies with. and any anrchist i know lividly hates those things. ugh im so sick of all the hype about our fucked up bipartisan politics. the Rnc was an awful place to be as a protester. you were profiled and snatched off street corners by unmarked vans, full of police. followed by undercovers, you’re safe spaces were raided with children inside of them, police with guns drawn, scared everyone half to death. and this was the same at the Dnc, its to protect the interests of the rich etc.

So, a few windows got broken and some news stands got overturned, and everybody’s talking about riots and “terrorism.” This is insane, there’s more property destruction after a Stanley Cup finals then there was at the RNC. Yet the police used these few acts of vandalism to unload gallons of tear gas, pepper spray, and stun grenades on peaceful protesters.
Sorry St. Paul Police, you grossly overreacted, and those terrorism charges need to be dropped now.
