Buesgens attended event as Emmer representative on day of DWI arrest

The invitation to a Sept. 18 Forest Lake Tea Party rally lists Buesgen's as an Emmer representative

Rep. Mark Buesgens, who was arrested Saturday on suspicion of driving while intoxicated, has worked for Republican gubernatorial candidate Tom Emmer, as past campaign manager and more recently as campaign chair. But while Emmer representatives told the Star Tribune Monday that Buesgens left the campaign on Sept. 12, the Minnesota Independent has learned that Buesgens spoke at a tea party event as a representative of the Emmer campaign the same day he was arrested. He then attended an event that night sponsored by Republicans in Wright County.

Buesgens was scheduled to speak at the We the People rally hosted by the Forest Lake Tea Party on Saturday, representing the Emmer campaign. The invitation for the Sept. 18 event (PDF) lists Buesgens as “Tom Emmer’s Campaign Chairman. A representative of the Forest Lake Tea Party confirmed to the Minnesota Independent that Buesgens attended and spoke at the event, and that he did so representing the Emmer campaign as campaign chairman.

The Minnesota Independent is awaiting a response from the Emmer campaign regarding the discrepancy.

Buesgens was also in attendance at a “Hangar Party” sponsored by the Wright County GOP and CampAmericaGrassroots.com, Bluestem Prairie reports.

CampAmericaGrassroots.com holds its meetings at the residence of Dick Borrell, which is also the site of the “Hangar Party” that lists Buesgens as an attendee. That party ended at 9 pm. At 10:30 pm, Buesgens was arrested on suspicion of driving drunk and had a blood alcohol level of 0.16.

Borrell has had his own issues with alcohol. In 2002, his statehouse candidacy lost the support of the Republican party after revelations of a sexual assault in 1987. He blamed alcohol.

“The fault is entirely mine,” Borrell said at the time. “Believe me, I don’t understand myself, what possessed me to think so crazy, to do so wrong. I try to look for reasons to prove I’m sane. A 12-pack of beer, five screwdrivers and three kamakazis. Sure I was drunk, real drunk.”

He added, “Yes, there was a full moon and all the craziness it can cause. Also the Ides of March and the fact I’m 35 drinking and pretending I’m just ‘one of the boys.’ Midlife crisis and all. All the reasons in the world won’t make it right.”

Mark Buesgens

The Emmer campaign released this statement on Buesgens’ arrest on Monday evening. “Mark made a serious mistake in judgment. I am thankful that he did not hurt others or himself. Driving under the influence is not acceptable. Mark is a friend. He is a good man. We will help him and his family in any way possible. They are in my thoughts and prayers.”

Buesgens also released a statement regarding the arrest.

“Because the legal case is pending, I’ve been advised to not comment further on the incident’s specifics,” he said. “However, I do want to say that I am very sorry and that I greatly regret my actions and how they have disappointed my family, friends and constituents.”

He said he has scheduled a chemical health meeting and will “immediately undertake any recommendations made in the evaluation.”

He added, “I am fully and completely committed to doing everything possible to ensure that these serious issues are addressed appropriately and effectively. I cannot overstate my gratitude for the public’s understanding, support and prayers during this difficult time for me and my family.”

Buesgens’ arrest comes after a string of alcohol related incidents that have become an issue in the campaign. Emmer faced criticism from left-leaning groups over two decades-old DWIs. His son, Tripp, became a target of the press when it was revealed that he was ticketed for underage drinking while he was employed by the campaign. In May, Emmer’s former campaign manager was arrested for DWI just days after stepping down. The charges against him were dismissed.

Well, that settles it. I’m not voting for Emmer because of this.

If I had to sit through that lineup of speakers, I’d get drunk, too.

Come on, apparently democrooks aggressively seek candidates that lie, often just for the fun of it. This sells like leftist desperation.

When you have no answers, as the far-left media does not, crank up the smear campaign and mix in a few lies.

How is this a smear campaign? Where are the lies?

He was drunk and he ran his car into the ditch.

If a democrook does the same and happens to kill someone in the process, he gets to be a Senator!

Again: is this a lie? Is there something inaccurate in it?

You don’t want to answer that without making reference to evil Democrats, do you? That is beyond pathetic.

Only a 2 time DWI’er like Emmer would support another DWI’er. No way would I vote for either of these clowns.

Emmer and Buesgens are not the people who should be involved in setting drunk driving policy in Minnesota. Their personal sins cloud their judgment

This fits their narrative in their attempted retroactive dismissal of Buesgens. Here’s the paperwork:

That Long Island Tea Party really knows how to throw a bash.

What is it about working for Emmer that makes people drink so much?

Is there a Teetotaler Party? I’ve gotten spoiled by *sober* representation.

And Bush did blow, Dayton relapsed to the booze as seantor, blah, blah, blah.

New Rule: Those that have no respect for the law and openly violate it, don’t get to be elected into a position that allows them to make/alter the law.

And Jimmy, can we please keep this on a local/state level instead of trying to pull in hail mary from across the country. I’m sure if I tried, I could find a ‘resmuglican’ (seeing as you like names) guilty of shagging a goat in Moosenut, Alaska if I looked hard enough. Ted Kennedy was a waste in his day- but he wasn’t our waste and wouldn’t get elected in this state for what he did.

Pretend you’re from around here and unplug from Glen Beck for a bit.
This isn’t leftist desperation, this got handed to then on a flippin’ silver platter.

Let me know when Emmer finally steals a clue from someone else, and when Dayton’s plan doesn’t suck anymore.

If anyone is looking for me, I’ll be off cheering for the 3rd party candidate that actually HAS a plan… and a solid grasp on sobriety.

Its the campaign LYING (Emmer caught lying yet again) about Buesgens’ position that is the issue, not the DWI

I am sooooo sick and tired of Republicans acting like idiots. Grow up and act like adults…and this goes for Republicans all over this country. Keep your pants zipped up, your legs crossed, feet under your own stall, stop apologizing for telling the truth and for god’s sake stay sober and start acting like Republican adults instead of like democrats. How dare any of you drink and drive drunk…against the very laws YOU institute.
As a die-hard Republican, I am sooo sick of all your behavior and all of YOU. YOU make the rest of us look bad.
Shame on you.

Being a drunk like Dayton is expected behavior for a Democrate. But a Repulican has a much higher standard because they are much better people.

Nice blanket statement Tim. Hey, when you’re done jerking off to the latest Glenn Beck broadcast, why don’t you pull your head from the sand and check out some independent news sources? Anyone can regurgitate Fox news, intelligent people find out facts for themselves and not what is spoon fed to the masses.

I’ll let you get back to washing your Klan linens now…

Alcoholism affects 1 in 3 families. It is a disease. I, for the life of me, don’t understand why we have so many prejudiced people in this world. Do you also hate people with diabetes or epilepsy? Tom Emmer had 2 DWIs more than 20 years ago; he made some mistakes in his youth. His colleague’s recent DWI indicates an alcohol problem. Yes, I believe driving drunk should be punished severely, but some of these people have a disease….a disease that is very difficult to treat. I see no indication that Tom Emmer hasn’t received a DWI in 20 years. are you perfect?

Whoops! The last 2 sentences should read: I see no indication that Tom Emmer has driven while drunk in 20 years. Are you perfect?

P.S. I believe it is important to judge character when electing an official; However, their platform and budget plan are important too.

Had this yahoo killed someone law enforcement would be tracing his alcohol consumption. Had someone served him alcohol after his drunkeness became apparent they might have been held liable. Dick Borell should thank his lucky stars that Emmer’s campaign manager didn’t kill someone.

We should all be relieved that its Alcohol causing all this craziness on the Right: Bachmann, Emmer, Paulsen (the numbers guy who can’t construct a basic graph.)

If it weren’t alcohol we’d have to admit that Minnesota was electing the clinically insane to represent us. That’s too scary to imagine.

Good Grief Suz, wake up and smell the coffee. Your party is led by an Overweight Oxycodone addict and a fool named Beck. And here you are making a backhanded comments about Democrats? Get a grip woman. The base has taken over your party and its not pretty.

Henk, The Republican Party is not led by Glen Beck. He has conservative values and respects the Constitution of the United States (unlike the current administration). Yes, he gets a little (a lot) carried away, but that’s what makes him so entertaining. The current day Republicans are NOT conservative anymore. We want to get back to our roots and balance the budget.

Suz, Politicians are human beings. Whether they are Democrat or Republican or Independent, they are fallible. Choose your candidate based on their platform and not what some members of their party or anyone else has done.

Henk: Glen Beck is a RECOVERING addict (which you purposely omitted), which makes him better than you and me…..He lives his life according to the 12 steps and I honor him for that. Get an education. You know, “a man who lives in a glass house should not cast stones.” Unless you’re perfect, this applies to you.

The law is, you don’t drink if your blood alcohol is over the limit. That is the law. Breaking that law doesn’t make you human, it makes you a criminal if convicted. Or can we extend the “human failure” to illegal drug use? Illegal drug sales? Robbery? I mean, after all, we’re all human, aren’t we? Don’t we all get legally drunk and drive, don’t we all commit burglary, don’t we all drive recklessly and endanger others? Because, apparently, that is what makes us human, according to the “personal accountability” conservatives.

Glenn Beck is a fat pink faced half wit that spews lies and distortions on a regular basis, that said He is not near as bad as the fat bag of crap Limbaugh. Glenn Beck interprets the constitution to fit his own personal beliefs when in reality he has no more of an idea than anyone else of what our founding fathers meant when they wrote the constitution. Nancie what Republican ever balanced the Budget? The only 2 presidents in the last 30 years that have balanced the budget are Jimmy Carter and Bill Clinton and the last time I checked they were both Democrats.
