Minnesotan seeks to creatively reuse Catholic church’s anti-gay marriage DVDs
Friday, September 24, 2010 at 11:57 am
With over a million anti-gay marriage DVDs hitting the mailboxes of Minnesota Catholics in the weeks leading up to Election Day, there’s been no shortage of ideas for what to do with them. OutFront Minnesota says that recipients should mark them “return to the sender” and drop them back in the mail to the Catholic diocese which sent them, while others have suggested leaving them in the collection plate at Sunday services. But Minneapolis artist Lucinda Naylor is encouraging Minnesotans to send her the DVD so that she can create an art project to counter the discriminatory message carried by the DVDs with one of “creativity and hope.”
“I’m an artist who has been doing a lot of work for Catholic churches over the past 15 years, so coming up with an artistic way to deal with the DVDs was my immediate first response,” said Naylor of the 14-minute created by the national Knights of Columbus and distributed by Catholic bishops in Minnesota. “I feel that the archbishop is particularly bent in regard to this issue of same-sex marriage.”
Lucinda is asking anyone who receives a DVD from the Catholic church to send them to her for an art project. “I have ideas, but it really depends on how many DVDs I get. I’d love to make a large sculpture — probably something rather flame or water like–since both are important Catholic symbols of the Holy Spirit,” she told the Minnesota Independent.
Naylor says that earlier this year, several of her friends, mostly mothers of gay children, wrote to the archbishop asking him to “open his heart” on the issue of homosexuality, but, she says, “these people received back form letters that called into question their very salvation!”
“This alone made me want to act.”
She also said the focus of the election in November should be about justice issues like education, health care and jobs. “The whole gay thing seems to be [Archbishop John] Neinstedt’s personal vendetta and a red herring taking us away from the real important issues.”
“I wanted to respond with creativity and hope for an inclusive world rather than with anger and hate. I mean somebody’s got to break that cycle… and it’s a Christian’s job to do it.”
Naylor has created a Facebook group to organize the DVD collecting, which will be done in front of churches and at drop boxes at supportive businesses.

Kudos to Naylor! I kinda think people’s theology is often much more inclusive and understanding than their religious institution allows them to be. Maybe someone can raise some money to show “8: The Mormon Proposition” or “Outrage” or “For the Bible Tells Me So”.

What the Catholic church is trying to do is to capitalize on people’s fears and prejudices. Make no mistake, this homophobic response is part of a larger political agenda to scare voters to the right….again.

Keep up the good work OutFront!

The bishop acknowledged the DVDs were paid for by an anonymous donor. Considering the timing of the DVD during an election season, it is likely the video message is designed to influence the race for governor. To me, it seems like the church is involved in political money laundering if they don’t reveal their “special donor”.
How can publicize who the anonymous donor is? Why is the church keeping it secret?

[...] And if you want to be inspired by how a local artist is using this DVD campaign of hate, and instead turning it into a message of love, equality and acceptance, check this story out from the Minnesota Independent. [...]

In my opinion Archbishop Neinstedt is treading on thin ice here: if the church wishes to be involved in legislation it should be paying taxes.
Naylor’s power to respond creatively is truly a gift of the Holy Spirit.

This is wonderful. Lucinda Naylor, who is artist in residence at the Basilca of St. Mary, the Catholic archdiocese’s co-cathedral, is a treasure. I would think people could also drop off their DVDs at the Basilica, say in the collection baskets, with a note saying, “Please deliver to Lucinda.”

Why doesn’t the church mobilize like this around something like poverty, education, peace, environmentalism or healthcare? You know, things that would ACTUALLY MATTER to Minnesotans AND Christians. This is clearly political, and I agree that the church’s tax exempt status should be reconsidered.

How can they question mothers’ salvation when we have been taught to love our children. The biggest lesson we have been taught as Christians is to love one another….leave the judgement up to our heavenly Father.
Perhaps the church should have mailed dvd’s out years ago titled ‘How to Protect your Children from Predators’.Their sex abuse scandals have damaged the Catholic church more than any other issue.

Lucinda Naylor will surely transform this mess into a message and vision of peace and love. And Catherine – I agree – the Holy Spirit is always and everywhere sending us opportunities to spread the Good News and share our gifts with others. Thanks to the generous, albeit misguided, donor whose money was used to make the DVDs – I feel this will create and reinforce friendships, relationships and peoples’ faith in a special way. Ya can’t keep a good Catholic down :)

What an exceptionally biased article. I guess it’s okay to lie about Catholic teachings as part of a liberal smear compaign. The Catholic Church does not hate or condemn gays, it merely reaffirms what Christians has taught for thousands of years: homosexual sexual relations are a sin. So are adultery and fornication.
It’s important to note that the vast majority of Americans do NOT support same-sex “marriage” — all 31 states that let the sovereign people vote rejected same-sex “marriage.” How about some art work on that!

Wow, Mich had an excellent comment and The Minnesota Independent site just deleted it! How about that for free speech?

Reposting: The article was astonishingly biased against and untruthful about the Catholic Church. Catholics do not condemn gays; the Church is merely affirming what Christians (and Jews and Muslims) have taught for thousands of years: that homosexual acts are sins. So are adultery and fornication. Stop saying the Catholic Church is anti-gay; it teaches us to love people with homosexual inclinations and not lie to them that gay sex is morally acceptable.
31 states have voted on same-sex “marriage” and ALL 31 states voted against it. The vast majority of Americans do not favor redefining marriage to include same-sex “marriage”.

People need to remember, the same Bible that teaches “LOVE THE LORD YOUR GOD WITH ALL YOUR HEART, WITH ALL YOUR SOUL, AND WITH ALL YOUR MIND” and “LOVE YOUR NEIGHBOR AS YOURSELF” (Matthew 22:37-39) also teaches that those who “practice homosexuality… shall not inherit the kingdom of God” (1 Corinthians 6:9-10; 1 Timothy 1:10; Lev 18:22; 20:13; Romans 1:27). Is warning someone about a dangerous lifestyle hate? NO, it is speaking the truth in love. (Eph 4:15)
And before anyone accuses me of being judgmental… the same Bible that teaches “Judge not, that you be not judged” (Matthew 7:1) also teaches “Do not judge according to appearance, BUT judge with righteous judgement” (John 7:24) Jesus said “He who rejects Me, and rejects my words has that which judges him – the word that I have spoken will judge him in the last day.” (John 12:48) It is His word that says that the CHOICE of a homosexual lifestyle is wrong.
And for those who say that this is not important compared to the economy or heathcare… THAT is not love when you care more about money then you do about someones salvation.

So Garret, can we put you into the ‘hates faggots’ column?
Comment posted September 26, 2010 @ 7:57 pm
Hey folks! Didn’t know anyone created a “hates faggots” column. If we all can’t figure out a way to turn this situation around, not letting it destroy relationships but rather build them, than we are no better than the hierarchy who showed a gross lack of common sense in releasing this DVD.
Don’t forget that Jesus gave us all a NEW commandment – to love one another as he loves us. There are no qualifiers in this commandment as far as I know.

ALL THE GOOD PEOPLE IN IOWA WHO FOLLOW JESUS 2ND COMMANDMENT – LOVE THY NEIGHBOR AS THYSELF – VOTE NO ON THE CONSTITUTIONAL CONVENTION QUESTION.
Here’s why……………….
The church that hid molestation of children for decades if not centuries. And used the old “protect your children from those horrible gays” to win at the ballot boxes in so many states. BTW the pope is implicated in the cover up.
The church that talks about life , but has yet to excommunciate the worst murderer in history, Adolph Hitler. Born and Baptised Catholic in very catholic Austria. Who btw often talked about christian values in his speeches, preserved in one of the worlds great libraries.
And who had every german soldier wear a belt buckle witht he words “Gott mit uns ” ( God is with us).
the church whose german pope UNexcommunciated Bishop Williamson in 2009. Williamson is a holocaust denier/minimizer. 6 million Jews and 5 million others died in the death camps and the message still hasn’t gotten through about genocide.
The church that is ignored in W. Europe, with every last western European country except italy and greece recognizing gay couples legally, including 7 via marriage
The church that is seeing Catholic Latin America topple. Argentina, columbia, and Mexico with gay marriage, Equador, Uruguay, and parts of Brazil with civil union arrangements.
It always amazes me of the horrors inflicted on humanity by people who claim to speak for God.
remember the old story – forever true – “Power corrupts, and absolute power corrupts absolutely”.
So when you claim to speak for God……………
ALL THE GOOD PEOPLE IN IOWA WHO FOLLOW JESUS 2ND COMMANDMENT – LOVE THY NEIGHBOR AS THYSELF – VOTE NO ON THE CONSTITUTIONAL CONVENTION QUESTION.

Mitch said “the church does not condemn gays”
no they just call them intrinsically disordered, and not natural.
All synonyms for crazy in some peoples minds..
And something in our society in general propagates the idea that its ok to pick on crazy people.
This from the church which is msupposed to be for social justice.
Who just poor the gasoline of hatred and homophobia on the ground, knowing that there will be many a match to ignite the conflagration.

I know a very catholic catholic. He seems like a nice guy, opposes gays though. We’ve had dozens of dinner debates with him over the years. He also appears to be a favorite of his local church, if Iam at his hjome, the ‘fathers” are always calling.
And after all this time “digging through his mind” (my minor was in psychology, he finally broke down and said in defense of his positions………
Re Matthew Shepard, the gay 110 # kid who was brutally beaten to death, after being picked up by a couple guys his own age, both cath btw)
This nice on the surface guy said of Matthew – “His parents should have fixed him”
Blaming Matthew’s parents for their sons murder
This is the catholic church. Recreating the Inquistion anytime that something challenges their absolutism, regardless of the human suffering they cause.
BTW. at Matthews funeral the same Westboro Baptist church that celebrates happily at the funerals of our hero soldiers killed fightin terrorists, showed up at Matthews funeral with pictures of him buring in hell.
Oh well, lots of the islamics sre living in the 8th century. They’re worse.

i can’t even begin…letter with dvd states “same sex marriage is an untested social experiment and, at worst, poses a dangerous risk with potentially far reaching consequences”..untested social experiment? try telling that to all the couples who have been together for years, in a committed loving relationship. dangerous risk..i don’t feel remotely “threatened” or in “danger”. what is some gay couples marriage going to break mine apart? the dvd talks so much about children. they need to be loved by a “woman” and a “man”, omg, so if i’m only truly loved by a man or just a woman, my life is “damaged”. i would just prefer to be loved, period. please explain to me what gay marriage has to do with “dead beat” dads? or woman who are divorced living in poverty? if the institution of marriage is crumbling, its bc people dont believe in it as a forever till the day you die type of thing. not bc someones having sex somewhere. blah blah blah. all that $$$$ going to a dvd that preaches to me in my own home. yes, i heard “all sins are the same in the eyes of god”. sorry but the “sin” of having consensual sex with someone, in my book, is nothing compared to murder, rape…..child molestation. oh, its “ok” to be gay, just dont “act” on it. so in other words, god created you with a defect? fyi- the bible is just one book, there are too many other ideas and beliefs to actually think that “this book” and how “you” choose to interpret it, is something we ALL need to abide to. believe me i could go on…..

I so agree with April`s comment 9/25/2010,been a catholic for 62 years,I am not for gay people getting married, but I will not be the one judging them in the end, that will be left up to God. also saw what a priest did to wreck 2 young boy`s lives in the early 70`s,happened in Bemidji,mn,and to think I WENT TO CONFESSION TO THAT SAME ASS_HOLE makes me sick!!!!!!!!!

There are plenty of threats to the institution of marriage – infidelity, domestic abuse, untreated alcohol and drug abuse, poverty. The catholic church (of which I was a member) does little or nothing to attend to these problems; instead, it cherry picks the old testament to justify its fear and hatred of our LGBT fellow citizens, and suggests that according them their full human rights to marry will somehow damage hetero marriage. I’d like to see the money the church wasted on the hateful dvd spent on addressing the real threats to marriage – and for the institution of marriage to be enriched by being extended to LGBT people.

The above URL shows the result of a meta-study of public opinion polls on same-sex marriage (SSM) in all 50 states by a team at Columbia University.
It shows that during 2008-2009 support in Minnesota for SSM was at 40% However, in politics, momentum is everything. At the current rate of increase of support in this state, it will take until about 2019 before the majority in the state supports SSM.
However, previous campaigns in other states have shown that negative fear-based TV ads can easily sway public opinion temporarily a few percent against SSM. So it will probably take until 2023 before a plebescite to authorize SSM would pass in the state.
Unless of course, the U.S. Supreme Court authorizes SSM across the entire country as they did in 1968 for inter-racial marriages.
