Rep. Erik Paulsen released a new television ad late last week that attacks DFL opponent Jim Meffert for supporting “high taxes” and health care reform. The ad asks, “Why is Jim Meffert running a negative campaign?” It then goes on to charge that Meffert wants to cut funding for Medicare and features an elderly woman scolding Meffert. The Meffert campaign called the ad “lies.”

“Why would Paulsen spend nearly his entire campaign war chest to attack me on television unless he is afraid he’s on a path to lose?” said Meffert in a statement. “But that is exactly what he is doing. And he will use every generic attack, half-truth and distortion possible to try to take us down over the next 39 days.”

Here’s Paulsen’s new ad:

Bait and switch. Accuse Meffert of negative advertising in an ad that is completely negative – and false. Paulsen has not done a positive thing in his short (one time) career. Change now.

Is Meffert even running ads right now?
