Artist loses basilica job after criticising Catholic anti-gay marriage campaign
Tuesday, September 28, 2010 at 8:53 am
An artist who had planned to create a sculpture from DVDs send out by Minnesota’s Catholic bishops said she was suspended from her position as the Basilica of St. Mary’s artist in residence. Lucinda Nayor’s project will take anti-gay marriage DVDs sent out to Catholics in advance of the November election and create a message of “creativity and hope.” While Naylor faces a setback at the basilica, she got a boost on Monday when other groups including one called Return The DVD, joined up with her project.
Naylor doesn’t want to dwell on the suspension from a position she’s held at the downtown Minneapolis basilica for 15 years, but says attention to it could help with her project. “It will draw more attention to the DVD to art project,” she told the Minnesota Independent on Sunday.
“Disappointed as I am by my suspension, I do not want to overly focus on it,” she wrote on her blog. “My primary focus remains on making a great piece of art.”
She said she was “startled and humbled to find that I join the ranks of people before me who been silenced or ousted one by one for disagreeing with the church.”
She added, “Maybe in 500 years, I, like Galileo, will get my suspension lifted.”
Naylor holds no ill will towards her church, however. “The Catholic Church is full of wonderful, loving people. The DVD to ART project is about highlighting those folks who say, ‘Yes, let’s come together and welcome everyone.’”
Naylor has also found drop-off sites for the DVDs to be used in her sculpture.
Minneapolis organizations providing drop boxes include Spirit of the Lakes United Church of Christ, Minnehaha United Church of Christ in the Longfellow neighborhood, Parkway United Church of Christ on Minneapolis’ north side and OutFront Minnesota in south Minneapolis.
Meanwhile, ReturnTheDVDs.org is offering to donate to another Catholic charity, St. Stephens Human Services, for every DVD that is received. That group is made up of “Catholics who are concerned about the priorities of the leaders in the Archdiocese of St. Paul and Minneapolis.” It says it will be “distributing 400,000 DVDs on the single subject of same-sex marriage shortly before the upcoming election, reflects misguided priorities and strays from the essential teachings of Christ.”

Pedophile priests are kept by the church but anyone who disagrees with the RC’s are dismissed. I guess this clearly points out that the RC church is solely about self preservation with little regard for people. Unfortunately the RC church has continued to stray from the message of Christ to the extent that it can hardly be called “Christian” any more. As in past years, the church continues to disparage and harm people. Certainly the Jews got the brunt of this hatred for many years. Amazing how two people who love each and want to marry are condemned by the church and those who use the power of the church to sexually molest people are promoted within the church. That tells the REAL story.

I hope people remember this come time for the annual Basilica Block Party. About the only thing the Catholic Church understands is MONEY. You want to make a statement that gets their attention, hit ‘em in the pocket book. Boycott the block party.

It would appeaar that the Church understands something more than money in this particular issue wherein money is nopt at all a factor. The issue is the teaching that the Church is called too proclaim, the same Truth that you can find in the Scriptures, if you care to look honestly.

The bishops of Minnesota are heroes. As Dan said, the mission of the Church is to proclaim the gospel, and the Bible says to proclaim it “in season and out of season”–that is, whether or not it’s easy. We must remain true to the gospel. Sadly, too many Catholics don’t seem to have read it. God loved us so much that that love became Jesus tortured to death for us–killed by our sins. And Jesus said we have to turn from our sin in order to attain eternal life. If you think about it, it’s not a bad exchange; giving up sin and gaining eternal life–a temporary thrill for perfect forever happiness. Pray for our bishops.

“organized religion” and what about organized schools, organized footballo or hockey, organized DMV, organized rock concerts? Do u have anything to do with them ?

And she’s going to create “a great work of art”? She sounds like a perfect air-head. Glad they got rid of her.
Comment posted September 28, 2010 @ 4:05 pm
She was artist in residence at the basilica for fifteen years. Who’s the airhead if they kept her on so long? Or perhaps she’s not an airhead, but merely an artist who finally discovered that her narrow-minded bosses really don’t appreciate free expression.
As for William the art critic, how about waiting to see what she makes before shitting on it?

Hopefully the Church will continue to chase out the heretics among its ranks. Good job to whoever closed the lid on this one.
Comment posted September 28, 2010 @ 6:27 pm
Frank, if the RC chased out all the heretics from amongst its ranks, there would be no one left in the church. Have you eaten any shell fish in your life or worn two different types of cloth at the same time? If so, you are as equal a sinner according to the Bible as the very ones you are condeming. That’s hypocrisy and heresy at the same time, so kudos to you!
Comment posted September 28, 2010 @ 7:26 pm
Yea Frank, let’s get rid of the “heretics” and keep the pedophiles. Good plan!
Comment posted September 28, 2010 @ 8:07 pm
Why do people think the Church should keep employed people who don’t publically
accept its teachings or criticize its leadership?
Besides, what the heck does an “artist in residence” do anyway?
Good riddens to her I say, I am sure there are more faithful Catholic artists that can
be found to fill this job.

The irony of course, is that catholic clergy in general and the basilica priests in particular, have been spouting lieft-wing crap for decades. They led the anti-war movement in the 1970s, they provided aid and comfort to the communist movements in central and south america, they’ve abdicated their role of caring for the poor to big government social programs and the big taxes that are required to pay for them.
So they stand up for one of their church’s beliefs regarding homosexuals and they’re viciously attacked by the homofascist nitwits on the left. I’m loving it, actually.

This is absolutely hilarious. In the case of Catholic priest predators within the Church, the above 2 groups are one in the same. Thanks for the knee slapper MikeNYC!!!

Who suspended her? Who is responsible for this? Why did they suspend her?
None of these questions are answered in this story. What a lousy piece of reporting.

Oh my, are we Catholics really going to be forced to live without art made from used DVDs?
I suppose one can only put one’s grin-and-bear hat on and go on… but I so wanted to
meet Ms Galileo!

Good “riddens,” indeed (to quote Scott123). I mean, why does the Catholic Church need art? It’s not like it did anything for the Sistine Chapel!

The truth will set you free, no matter how politically incorrect it might be. It’s always good when a dissenter has to find another way to make a living. We call this “biting the had that feeds you.” Hope she can make a living on DVD sculptures and the heresy called homosexual “marriage.”

The artist was suspended from her work at the basilica, not tossed out of the Catholic Church.
Priests who have abused have also not been tossed out but they, too, have lost their jobs
in the sense that they may no longer function as priests.

to Dan Buckley.
If the Church followed the New Testament then they would send out DVD calling for all
military members to lay down their guns and refuse to kill. The Church would refuse communion to
all the politicans who advocate money for the Pentagon and the wars. The Church would condemn
the business and their workers who make weapons of war.
Now that DVD I would donate to.
* and by the way.. why did the ArchBishop choose and all white ensemble for the DVD ?

Finally, cleaning house. Homosexual acts are perverse. All you haters of the Catholic Church are wasteing your time. Haters comae and go, the Church remains!

Jesus certainly forgave the woman caught in adultery, but he demanded she change her behavior.

The Catholic Church drives out the moderates. The Tea Party Republicans drive out the moderates. Soon, all the religious crazies and right-wing crazies will neatly fit in a small rural county where that can’t hurt anybody any more, probably somewhere in Mississippi.
Comment posted September 29, 2010 @ 2:48 pm
Glen,
I do not remember Christ holding up moderates as examples. I do remember Him telling us that the lukewarm make God vomit. Pretty strong language. We need fervor when following the truth, not middle-of-the-road, let’s make everyone happy inclusion. Christianity is a tough religion and only the tough will make it. error is not truth, and truth is not error.

I wonder how many people the Catholic church could have fed with the 1.6 million dollars they spent on political causes. When is someone going to have the courage to stand up and demand that this political organization be taxed? Or does the church spend so much money on troops of attorneys that no one can beat them? How much money does this diocese alone spend on corporate attorneys?
Comment posted September 29, 2010 @ 7:18 pm
Bernie – That’s baloney. Give one example of a pedophile priest who has lost employment. The church doesn’t get rid of pedophile priests. It sends them to camp and then gives them a new position – where they go on to hurt more children. And does your tithing go towards Christ’s directives? To feed the hungry, to clothe and house the poor? No. It goes to pay filthy lawyers who represent the church at $400 an hour.
Comment posted September 29, 2010 @ 7:24 pm
Dennis, You are sure right on one point. The church has abdicated its role in caring for the poor. Instead of feeding the poor and giving shelter, it pays the highest priced attorneys it can find to defend itself against the irreperable harm it has done to children.
You’re not following the teachings of Jesus Christ – who was called a revolutionary for throwing the Pharisees from the Temple. Look up what he actually taught and said. It’s easy to find. It’s called the New Testament. If you can’t follow his teachings, go join the Baptists.

T”he bishops of Minnesota are heroes. As Dan said, the mission of the Church is to proclaim the gospel, and the Bible says…” No, Ruth Fitzwater, the bishops of MN have forgotten Christ and what Christ taught us. Do you remember “Give to Caesar what is Caesar’s and what is God’s unto God?” It is easy to find. It is a section of the bible called the New Testament – which Christians, including Catholics, are taught to follow. Find me a section of the New Testament, the teachings of Jesus Christ, which tells his followers to collect $1.6 million dollars and instead of feeding the poor, instead of caring for the sick, instead of sheltering the homeless, SPEND IT ON DVDs full of hatred. I do not believe you will find it. That was not Christ’s message. But the Baptists diregard the entire New Testament and you might find a more comofrtable spiritual home with them. Because you are not a Christian.
In addition, this is America, not Iran, not Iraq, not Saudi Arabia and there is a clear distinction between church and state, guaranteed by our constituition and by the founders of this country. If you want to live in a theocracy – move to one. If you want to live in America, under constitutional law, be prepared to folllow that law. The leaders of the Catholic Church in MN are not. And they should be prepared to face the consequences and pay taxes on every piece of property, every piece of gold-lcaed clothing and every investment they hold. If the Catholic Church wants to be a political organization, it needs to be prepared to lose it’s non-profit status and pay taxes.

Remember when the church was about helping the poor and charity? I miss those days.

The Church is Jeff, helping single mothers in poverty attending college and working by providing temp, low-income housing. The Father of the Basillilca founded that.

Wow all this over a dvd on marriage between a man and a woman. A dvd that most of the people interviewed didn’t even watch. The money for the dvd was donated for that purpose. the church is always feeding and helping the poor if you are showing up for mass you already know that fact. don’t make this about hate or race that is what people do to bully their ideas across to others. if you don’t agree fine that’s between you and God.
