Republican Randy Demmer‘s first television ad of the campaign cycle criticizes incumbent DFL Rep. Tim Walz for supporting health care reform, cap-and-trade legislation and “trillion-dollar deficits.” The ad, which features an ominous photo of Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi flanked by lightning bolts, is backed by the National Republican Congressional Committee, which kicked in to fund the media buy.

Here’s Demmer’s ad:

Standard republican talking points. Why would I vote for a rubber stamp who would have let the economy collapse entirely – as a matter of principle?

Because principles are what this country needs.

I should be more clear: we do not need people in government who would let the economy collapse as a matter of principle, especially when their principles embrace policies that have already been repeatedly proven to fail.

Conservative policies have been weakening the economy for the past 30 years, making this recession far more serious and difficult to recover from.

Yes, this country needs principles, but not the principles of fear, suspicion, prejudice, intolerance, and proven failure that the republicans are selling.

We need principles that will strengthen our economy, prepare for our future, and maintain our leadership role in the world.
