Facing pressure, Emmer event in Latino community canceled

A rally for Republican gubernatorial candidate Tom Emmer at a Lake Street Mexican restaurant was canceled on Thursday after pressure from members of Minnesota’s Latino community and supporters. The rally, to be held at a popular Lake Street restaurant, was canceled after the owner was told the event was for Emmer. He told Spanish-language radio station La Invasora 1400 that the organizers failed to tell him it was a political rally.
Oscar Reyes, owner of the Los Mojarras Restaurant, said that the rally was set up by Rich Aguilar, who did not tell him it was a rally for Emmer. Aguilar, a Republican activisit, is a member of the Metropolitan Council who was appointed by Gov. Tim Pawlenty. He did not respond to a weekend request for comment.
Calling the move “cínico” (cynical), radio host Alberto Monserrate said, “In all of the organizing I’ve observed, those setting up events let businesses know that it’s a campaign-related event because of the potential for customer disapproval. Those organizing this rally appear to have sought a meeting in the Latino community, but failed to tell the Latino small business owner that this event was for Emmer.”
The Republican Party of Minnesota sent out an email to its members on Oct. 19 alerting them to a “rally with gubernatorial candidate Tom Emmer in Minneapolis.” By Thursday, the event had been canceled. An email alert to members didn’t explain the cancellation or the controversy surrounding it: “The Tom Emmer event that was originally planned for Saturday morning in Minneapolis has been CANCELLED,” the email said.
According to a press release, Reyes said learned that it was an Emmer rally after “community organizers and activists” made hay out of the planned event on Twitter and Facebook.
On La Invasora, Reyes and Monserrate noted that some of Emmer’s policies are not in line with mainstream Latino voters.
Emmer made headlines earlier this year when he said that Arizona’s SB1070 was a “wonderful first step.” He has also called for making English Minnesota’s official language.
The interview with Oscar Reyes is available here.

So much for Emmer’s attempt to do a secret stealth rally in a community whose members he’s dissed. I’m sure the plan was to go in and get lots of photos of Emmer standing near Latinos in order to “prove” they don’t rightfully despise him. Wonder where the next attempt at a stealth rally will be — the Hard Times Café?

I’d hate to think that refusing to enforce immigration laws is the view of mainstream Latino voters, because if it is, they wouldn’t be interested in voting republican anyway. Otherwise, it’s rather ironic that a business owner, of all people, would be supporting the anti-business party, the DFL. Unless of course he’s employing illegals to work in the kitchen. Maybe we should find out.

How about The Gay 90′s? That would be worth seeing.

Dennis: the business owner is probably more worried about a group that can affect his business more than the Democrats or Republcans: the customers. If you have no customers because you appear to support an agenda that is anti-Latino, it doesn’t much matter which party clains to be more pro-business. And besides that, isn’t having health care available for your employees pretty pro-business?

BAM! How do you like those tacos? Oh wait, you’re not welcome in Mexican restaurants…

Dennis, how does it feel to be a tool of the Right Wing? Like the Native Americans like to say, you speak with a forked tongue.

Dennis, let us know if they have granite countertops in that kitchen.

“Aguilar, a Republican activist”; ugh, how about you not exploit your people, Malinche.

Go ahead, Dennis. You go down there and you ask around for documentation. I’d like to know how that works out for you.

Dennis, historically, businesses and the middle class do better under Democrats. Republicans support top level CEO’s and bankers, but that is different than small businesses and workers. Heck, corporate profits were up 37% last quarter. You can’t get more pro-business than that. What more do you want?

Oh yeah, because we all do so much better with higher taxes and the government regulating every aspect of our lives. Get a clue, Alec. The democrat party is the party of government. If you have a government job, you’ll be voting democrat out of self-preservation. Anyone who works for a living, doesn’t.

Dennis –
Please promise that you’ll never change. Your attachment to republican talking points, over-the-top hyperbole and out-and-out lies and falsehoods are an inspiration to us all.
never back down when the facts or the truth – which have a liberal bias as we all know – get in the way.

Why does Emmer lie all the time?
This is just like Buesgens and the guy suing him, Emmer didn’t have to lie but he does anyway.
Just tell people it is a political event when you book it. If you can’t find a single Latino restaurant in the metro that will host your event, maybe you should take it as a sign that you have, at least, an image problem.
But no, we’ll lie instead, er, withhold the truth.
Maybe Mr. Emmer would enjoy it if a group contracted him to do legal work for them, and when he showed up for the meeting it would be to build a mosque next to the Basilica. They bring in the press for photos, and announce that Emmer supports the mosque. Would Tom throw a tantrum?

Wow! Imagine if a business in the white community did this to a minority candidate? There would be public outcry about racism; but since Emmer is white, not much gets said does it? I love the double standards.
This event changed my vote. I’ll be pulling for Emmer based on this kind of shabby and intolerant behavior, and shame on that business owner while he acts this way. I’ll bring my money to a place that doesn’t seem so racially bigoted.

Jacob – Wow! Do you really expect us to believe that this incident “changed” your vote?
Bullshit.

I can see the bumper stickers now:
Vote for Emmer because some Latino restaurant owner didn’t want to be misled into hosting a political event.
Now THAT”S a slogan that wins votes.

Why do the latinos not see this as a chance to have discussions about the
differences and the things they see the same way. Maybe this is why this nation
is having so many problems that can not get solved. Nobody can have a civil discussion.

Everyone has this completely wrong. It’s not political, it’s economic. See, restaurant workers, especially servers are routinely bringing in over $100,000 per year in income. As the rally was scheduled for Saturday, unfortunately there wouldn’t be any staff available at the restaurant. That’s because most restaurant workers take the weekend off, because obviously, they can afford to. When we start paying restaurant workers less, a real competitive wage, then the supply and demand will finally fall into line.
Then, we can do something about their unreasonably high benefits too.

Maybe because the event wasn’t that at all. It was a political event, hidden because the intention was to imply support that wasn’t there.
Emmer was invited numerous times to speak to Latinos. But he refused, because he was too busy, he said. More likely because they weren’t his kind of Latinos. And that is why there is no dialog, Jerry.

Dennis is speaking the truth though, is immigration of primary importance to Hispanics? This shows who is a tool for the Democrats, they exploit racism.
Cubans in Miami for immigration reform? I don’t think so.
And do those speaking up for Illegal Aliens want us to become the way Mexico currently is??
Los Zetas, one MEXICAN drug cartel massacreing 72 immigrants coming from Central and South America?? And all those great beheadings down in Mexico.
Yes, Dennis rightfully pointed out, the Democrats once again play the race card, talk about forked tongue, snicker!

When you’re a member of a political party that has declared open war on entire ethnic groups – Latinos being one of them – you ought to know better than to pull this sort of thing.
What’s next, an Emmer rally at a gay bar? I’d like to see that.

I never knew that the DFL party was “anti-business.” What an ignoramus comment but that’s what the Republicans are looking for in order to win this election – ignorant people!!

Emmer could have his event at one of Tony Sutton’s Baja Sol restaurants. That way they can have “Mexican” food without the possibility of encountering actual Mexicans.

I’m from New Mexico, a lot of Hispanics are pro life, simply put and vote Republican, look up who Manuel Lujan was and many others. As usual, all the Demon Rats can do is play the Race card.

A white man can’t catch a break, first “the man” busts him, just because he was driving after having a couple beers, but once wasn’t enough they had to hassle him a second time. Then the facists at the Lorretto bank threaten to foreclose on his home, just because he wasn’t making the payments. It took eight years and 7 refis and he’s still having trouble with the mortgage. Thank god, for his good financial sense and a subprime, interest only loan, with a balloon in 5 years, he’s getting by.
Now Latinos refuse to show him love, just because he wants them, and everyone else, to prove thier citizenship on demand. Sure he wants to make their lives more difficult by barring the government from printing instructions in mulitple languages, but its for their own good.
Its hard out there for a pimp. I mean a white man.

uuughh is right – aguilar is the clarence thomas of the latino community. A complete self serving sell-out. He used to cut hair a long time ago. I’m pretty sure all those chemical have gotten to his head. His stupid mentality of pulling up your boot straps is wholy without thought or compassion. Of course he sucked up to pawlenntyy to get that job that he is certainly underqualified.
