Tea Party Nation backs Torgerson because Ellison is Muslim

Tea Party Nation founder Judson Phillips sent an email to members on Saturday that said voters should pick independent Lynne Torgerson over Rep. Keith Ellison in the 5th Congressional District race because, “He is the only Muslim member of congress.” Torgerson, who has been very critical of Muslims in general and Ellison in particular, spoke out about the issue on a Christian radio show last week.

“There are a lot of liberals who need to be retired this year, but there are few I can think of more deserving than Keith Ellison,” wrote Phillips. “Ellison is one of the most radical members of congress. He has a ZERO rating from the American Conservative Union. He is the only Muslim member of congress. He supports the Counsel [sic] for American Islamic Relations, HAMAS and has helped congress send millions of tax dollars to terrorists in Gaza.”

He continued, “Lynne Torgerson is a good conservative, opposing the lunacy that Ellison brings to congress. Lynne Torgerson is someone we really need to see in congress.”

Ellison is the first Muslim to be elected to Congress, but he’s not the only one. André Carson has been representing Indiana in the House since 2008.

Phillips is the head of Tea Party Nation, a group that hosted Sarah Palin in February for a national tea party convention held in Tennessee.

Torgerson relayed her views on Islam to Pastor Brad Brandon on his radio program late last week. Torgerson was among candidates Brandon recently endorsed from the pulpit of his Hastings church, triggering a complaint to the Internal Revenue Service.

“I am trying to expose Keith Ellison and his ties to CAIR and radical Islamism,” she said. “He’s been tied to CAIR since college. CAIR was named a co-conspirator in the Holy Land Foundation trial which was convicted of sending $12 million to the terrorist organization Hamas, and Keith Ellison also helps CAIR raise funds and CAIR helps Keith Ellison raise funds.”

Brandon asked Torgerson about her campaign, and she outlined three issues she is focused on.

“One is to expose Keith Ellison and that he has no business being in our federal government,” she said. “Two, I also am trying to teach people about the problems we have with the ideological political part of Islam as opposed to the religious part. Under the First Amendment, we, of course, have to allow them to worship the moon god Allah but beyond that Islam, also known as Sharia law, is not just a religion. A big part of it is the political ideology that is in conflict with our U.S. Constitution, freedom of speech, equal protection for women, freedom of religion.”

Her third issue is green energy and reducing America’s reliance on oil.

Torgerson drew criticism for statements she made in an interview with Minnesota Independent late last year.

Despite her campaign rhetoric, Torgerson said if she is elected she looks forward to ending racism in America.

“He has a ZERO rating from the American Conservative Union”

This is a bad thing?

I am getting real tired of these psycho christian lunatics that are running around in this country. I know that they have the right to say what they want, but some of their rhetoric is getiing very dangerous to the basic principles of this country. As Welch said to McCarthy…

“Have you no sense of decency, sir, at long last? Have you left no sense of decency?”

I guess history repeats itself, even with the loonies.

Wait, this story can’t be true! The Tea Party says they aren’t concerned with social issues, only the economy. The fact that all of the members of their party agree on social issues, is just a coincidence…

The “moon god Allah”? Where do these semi-literate conservatives get this stuff?

I’m guessing Torgerson will next claim that she’s heard that Ellison rides on a magic flying carpet.

That Ellison “…has a ZERO rating from the American Conservative Union”, should be a badge of honor.

Andy – could you verify that she really said “moon god” – I’m not doubting you, I just find it really hard to believe that somebody would actually say something like that

I’m sure Ellison has zero interest in being endorsed by a capitalist organization, regardless of their feelings towards him. It would be bad for his street cred amongst the young and the clueless.

Thomas: I confirmed, she said “moon god” (there’s a link to the audio in Andy’s story, so have a listen). Some suggest Allah and the moon god Hubal are one and the same, although it’s a minority opinion, often used by those opposed to Islam to suggest it’s a pagan religion.

Thomas,
I can also verify that she said “moon god” while she was a guest on Brad Brandon’s “Word of Truth” radio program last week on KKMS.

It is clear that the teabaggers are driven by the idea that being like them somehow determines what is right. They do not base their beliefs on logic, information, and arguments, or even moral considerations; but on how much a situation matches how THEY are. If they drive SUVs to work, then driving SUVs to work is a good thing–QED. If they are Christian, than being Christian is good and Islam is bad. If they are a soccer mom with little knowledge, then soccer moms with little knowledge are ideal candidates for president, senator, etc. Such a view results from lack of critical thinking skills.

Rob,
In the case of these people it’s “Critical” that’s important. They’re not much on the thinking.

Oh how ironic and the whole tea party claims to not be racist? Keith Ellison is a black man and muslim who also happens to be democrat But it is good that the Tea Pary is not endorsing him because the tea party is a bunch of know nothing nutjobs with a very narrow view of the world.

For people like Judson Phillips, the political center is radically liberal. He thinks that his radical subculture is normal and mainstream.

Um, no, Keith Ellison is not the only Muslim in Congress. Andre Carson in Indiana’s 7th district is also Muslim. He was just the first, moron.

I think Keith Ellison is the perfect representiative of the human debris that is the 5th district. Why a decent christian woman would believe she could best represent the dope dealers and prostitutes is beyond me.

Allah is not a “moon god”, you ignorant thugs. There are dozens and dozens of verses in the Quran stating that he is the One God of all creation, God of Abraham, Moses, and Jesus. Quit spreading lies.

Yes, all you residents of Golden Valley and the Parkway, Richfield, Robbinsdale, New Hope, St. Louis Park and Fridley, all you who live in pricey condos in downtown Minneapolis, those who live along the Parkway, you are all human debris. And all of you are drug dealers and prostitutes.

Dennis regards anyone not like him as “human debris.” He has made slimy accusations that mosques and AME churches violate laws regarding their tax-exempt status. He has made veiled accusations that a prominent Latino businessman is emplying undocumented aliens. He isn’t too fond of gays, either.

But no, he’s not a bigot. Everyone knows liberals are the only bigots in America. It’s just coincidence that he hates people of color, non-Christians, and gays. That’s not bigotry, right, Dennis?

Maybe the teaparty in Minnesota should try handcuffs or head stomping to CONVINCE people that their candidates are RIGHT for America. If those two tactics fail, maybe they could employ a few random lynchings. What a bunch of lunatics!!As a side note to Denise, when did he start living nearer the foot of the cross?

For all Dennis’ talk in past comments about how great Christianity is (so great, he doesn’t believe there should be a separation of church and state), it’s suprising he’d call people “human debris.” So much for Jesus’ words, “Whatsoever you do to the least of my people, that you do unto me,” eh, Dennis?

Damien,

Good point. Ellison came door knocking, I said “hello”, he said “convert or die”.

I said “what?”

He drew a sword and cut my head off.

That’s how I lost MY head, how did you lose yours?

Different Tim–lol. Thank you for the laugh.

Re: Torgerson’s comment about “the moon god Allah.” What strikes me about this beyond anything else is the tacit Christian supremacism at work. It’s the reflex, not applied to her own beliefs apparently, that holds that any other faith is corrupt in some way, closer in theological terms to savage pagan roots, and thus transparently false to those with the proper faith perspective. In other words, Torgerson’s statement is an unalloyed expression of parochialism allied with a great deal of religious illiteracy. This mindset may work for Torgerson’s natural conservative allies, but in a metro area that’s increasing cosmopolitan (however tentatively and slowly that process is) and multicultural, educated, traveled, skeptical of the traditional smug certainties of time and place and local culture, her brand of yokel ignorance simply won’t find as many dupes as it once did.

Re: Dennis: Reading him, you at first you might have the impression of a propensity for rhetorical exaggeration. But then you realize that this might be all that’s going on–he can’t see beyond his crude stereotypes and grossly simplistic categories. From top to bottom that’s as deep as it gets with Dennis. One hallmark of the right-wing authoritarian personality is a profound inability to think critically. The samel authoritarian mind will contain numerous internal contradictions that are completely hidden to the person who has them.

Thus, Dennis, in typical fashion, categorizes an incredibly wide swath of people (gay, straight, religious, atheist, professional, poor, left, moderate, conservative, etc.) as “human debris”, simply by virtue of where they live, and in the SAME sentence he questions Torgerson’s commitment to Christian values, which presumably include loving thy neighbor as thyself. But it’s entirely possible, even likely, he doesn’t even realize there’s any contradiction in what he said. In short, he doesn’t think.

The entire point of Islam, for some historical perspective, was to bring judeo-christianity to the arab population. It’s just the arab interpretation of it. Which is why fundamentalists of all three of these faiths all tend to have the same views on women’s rights, gays, etc. Fortunately for us, Ellison is not a fundamentalist, so all the teabeggers can stop popping prozac whenever he walks by. Everything is going to be just fine.
