Bachmann dodges Hardball question about subpoenas for Democrats
Wednesday, November 03, 2010 at 12:00 am
As she awaited election results Tuesday night, Rep. Michele Bachmann did a quick interview with MSNBC’s Chris Matthews. Presaging the victory that came for Bachmann an hour later, Matthews revisited the topic of their conversation two years earlier: “If your party gets control of the House of Representatives, will you use the subpoena power to investigate the Democratic members of Congress for un-Americanism?”
“Will you use the subpoena power, which you will have as majority, if you claim the majority of the Congress — it looks like you will — will you use subpoena powers to do what you said on my show you’d do — investigate the Democratic members of Congress for un-American activities?”
His question referenced their Oct. 2008 conversation in which Bachmann said she believed the media should investigate “anti-American views” she believes Barack Obama and members of Congress hold.
“I think the first thing we’re going to do is try to set the economy in order, because jobs is the big issue,” she answered. “What people want to make sure is that no one’s taxes are going up. So I’m calling on Speaker Pelosi during the lame duck session to listen to the American people. They’re speaking overwhelmingly tonight: ‘Don’t raise our taxes. Stop the out-of-control spending. That’s how we’re going to get jobs back.”
She says she wants to see an “extension to all the current tax policy.”
When Matthews again asked about using subpoena power to investigate fellow legislators, she ignored it, instead listing four tax-related policies she says she’ll pursue.
“Are you hypnotized tonight?” Matthews then asked. “Because no matter what I ask you, you give the same answer.”
“I think the American people are the ones that finally are speaking tonight,” she replied, generating guffaws from MSNBC commentator Keith Olbermann. “We’re coming out of our trance. We’re coming out of our nightmare.”
Matthews’ promised to bring up the subject in a future interview.
At the GOP Youth Convention July, Bachmann did address the question.
“How do you feel about the chances for like a little oversight and a little accountability now that the Republicans will have the subpoena power,” she was asked. “How aggressive do you think…”
“Oh, I think that’s all we should do,” Bachmann said. “I think that all we should do is issue subpoenas and have one hearing after another. And expose all the nonsense that is gone on. And it’s very important when we come back that we have constitutional conservative leadership because the American people’s patience is about this big. So we have to make sure that we do what the people want us to do.”

Michele Bachman took every thing Chris Matthews had tonight and punched back, during her live election night MSNBC interview with the Hardball host. After a frustrated Matthews actually asked the Congresswoman if she was “hypnotized” and in a “trance” for not answering his questions the way he liked, Bachmann fired back: “The American people are the ones…coming out of our trance…I think people are thrilled tonight. I imagine that thrill is probably maybe quite not so tingly on your leg any more.”
Report the whole story. Ha ha ha

She didn’t ask the question he asked. How is that “punching back”? Also, the full video’s there. Peruse away.

A combative Chris Matthews accuses Rep. Michele Bachmann (R-MN) of being “hypnotized” and under a “trance.”
Bachmann says we’re out of this “nightmare” and “we’re thrilled.”
“I think people are thrilling tonight, I imagine that thrill is maybe not quite so tingly on your leg anymore, I’m not sure anymore,” Rep. Bachmann told Matthews.
After the interview, a purple-faced Matthews said “I never used that word” and called Bachmann a moron.
Too Funny!

So what’s going on at 1:18? Someone holds up a “Going Rogue”-style book/magazine cover showing Bachmann’s image for a few seconds before it gets snatched away.

“What I would say is that the news media should do a penetrating expose and take a look. I wish they would. I wish the American media would take a great look at the views of the people in Congress and find out, are they pro-America or anti-America? I think the American people would love to see an expose like that.”
- Michele Bachmann 10/17/2008
She never suggested that congress investigate un-American views, but merely that the press should do its job and expose some of these anti-capitalists. So not only did Mathews lie about what she said, he was an ass and a partisan hack for bringing up an irrelevant two-year old topic when a real journalist would have thought of a hundred other, more relevant things to ask her. Like, “Now that you’re in the majority, what legislation will you be introducing?”
To her credit, she answered the questions he should have asked her. Her supporter holding up the sign that mocked Matthews was hilarious.

And they say that the right is disrespectful… Last night watching MSNBC was a joke. They had nothing kind to say about anyone on the right. They were cruel and down right mean to people and even more so after they person left the air so they would have no chance to rebut what was being said about them. It is not those of US on the right who are rude and intolerant, you on the left are the mean kids on the playground.

“To her credit, she answered the questions he should have asked her.”
That’s not “to her credit.” She ignored the questions that he DID ask her.
Who is she to decide what questions she “should” be asked?

No, she never said Congress should investigate “anti-American views” but then her party did not hold a majority and she was not anywhere near being discussed as a party leader. Bachmann has been in Congress for four years. The only legislation she’s introduced is the “anti-lightbulb” bill. Maybe this is news to some readers, but there’s nothing that says you have to be in the majority party to introduce bills and try to get them passed. Of course, when you start out your second term accusing your colleagues in the majority party of being “ant-American” and questioning their loyalty, and proclaiming that your goal is to defeat Health Care reform before it’s even out of the box to “make this Obama’s Waterloo” you’re not probably not going to get anything passed either. For the next two years, the new excuse will be that the Democrats or the President are obstructing “our mandate.”
That’s if anything is even tried. We’ve been promised two years of pointless “Whitewater” investigations by this crowd. It’s safe to assume and be pleasantly surprised later that Bachmann will spearhead a new McCarthyist witchhunt for “traitors” in the administration, or maybe here is Minnesota. If it’s “anti-American” to be “anti-capitalist”, I imagine anyone who favors government spending to increase aggregate demand is a “traitor” so anyone who calls themselves a Democrat, progressive or a liberal will be branded as such. I know. I’m being so mean for pointing out the truth.

She clearly makes the point that her priorities are:
- extend the Bush tax cuts
- repeal Obamacare
- secure the borders
- stop the plans for the cap and trade energy tax
If the idiots in the democrat press want to change the subject to irrelevant topics, that’s certainly their perogative. But it seems to me that they’d learn more and be more effective in their jobs as journalists by asking her about her actual objectives than in persuing pretend ones.

What’s pretend about this?
“How do you feel about the chances for like a little oversight and a little accountability now that the Republicans will have the subpoena power,” she was asked. “How aggressive do you think…”
“Oh, I think that’s all we should do,” Bachmann said. “I think that all we should do is issue subpoenas and have one hearing after another. And expose all the nonsense that is gone on. Bachmann’s priority is to make Obama a one term president. We knew that before Obama was sworn into office. How that was going to happen has been shown in the last 23 months with right wing obstructionism and name calling. As far as Bachmann’s zombie impression, that was because she was on the line trying to hear Pat Robertson and James Dobson about what to say.
You can’t take Bachmann at her word because it means nothing. We won’t know what the real agenda is until somebody talks to Pat Robertson and James Dobson. Even taking her word at face value gives nothing to hope for (which I suppose is the point, the right being the party of despair).
Extending the Bush tax cuts?- they’re supposed to expire before the new Congress takes office. Anyway, what does that do to deal with the deepening Depression and financial crisis? Or are those just figments of the “democrat press”? Are these tax cuts supposed to just kick in after being in effect for 10 years? How exactly are these tax cuts supposed to work? The banks and corporations are sitting on trillions in TARP money (sponsored by BushCo) but not creating jobs. Is the deficit no longer a problem to Bachmann? What’s she going to do about that?
repeal “Obamacare”?- so insurance companies can resume cutting off people who get sick and denying coverage to people with pre-existing conditions? and do what to fix the failed health care system?
secure the borders- How’s that going to happen. Deputize Sheriff Joe with a bunch of Tea Party vigilantes? Building a wall along the Mexican and Canadian borders?
-stop the cap and trade energy tax- the alternative? “drill, baby, drill”? Let the polar ice cap and Greenland glaciers melt? Never mind. If we ignore the threat of climate change and pull the covers over our heads, maybe it’ll go away.
We know Bachmann’s priorities are to serve the wealthiest 0.01% of the country. What’s her plan for the rest of us?

The point is, jonerik, Matthews would have a whole lot more credibility if he had simply asked the same questions that you just did. But he chose not to because he’d rather try to embarrass her by asking her a question based on a false premise.
Maybe you should apply for Chrissy’s job.

It was disconcerting to watch grown-up pundits on MSNBC last night disecting the election results. They behaved boorishly and unprofessionally…..like toddlers throwing hissy-fits because the election didn’t turn out for the “Liberals”
I wonder why Chris Matthew’s 5 and 7 hour spot on Cable News is the second lowest and Fox News is the highest. MSNBC is sooo biased that a viewer who would appreciate another political point of view couldn’t bear listening to the diatribe.

Classic example of why they are in last place. A total embarrassment for the alleged network. I am a liberal democrat and was aghast at the way they treated a seated senator. Shame on you MSNBC

Her 4 campaign points were focused on partisan ideology. Someone had to remind her that job creation was supposed to be front and center.
Beyond that:
It is understandable that Bachmann was not focused on the interview. She was drunk with the euphoria of victory, just like the democrats were 2 years ago.
The Democrats went through the same thing two years ago. I tried to warn them not to get too carried away, that there is a great deal of power in fear, prejudice, and ignorance. Now we are that much closer to mob rule and anarchy.

Bachmann needs to resign immediately. She does NOT check her “facts”. This is not the first time she has deliberately and intentionally tried to misled the American people with lies and misinformation. Bachmann is totally incompetent, lacks any sense of honesty or integrity and is an embarrassment to her State and to the Nation. IMPEACH NOW!!
