Sens. Al Franken and Amy Klobuchar pressed the Obama administration last week to grant the “strongest possible protections” to the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge in a letter signed by 25 senators. The letter suggests that oil drilling should not occur in the wilderness area.

“As we approach the 50th anniversary of the establishment of the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge on Dec. 6, 2010, we ask that you grant the Arctic Refuge the strongest possible protections,” the senators said in their letter. “Many Inupiat people across the North Slope have voiced opposition to oil drilling in the Refuge because they are increasingly feeling the cumulative effects of oil and gas development in the North Slope of Alaska on their subsistence resources and way of life.”

They added, “As you continue important efforts across the country through the America’s Great Outdoors Initiative, we urge you to also take steps to provide additional protections to the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge.”

In addition to Franken and Klobuchar, the letter is signed by Sens. Joseph Lieberman, Tom Udall, Diane Feinstein, Mark Udall, Maria Cantwell, Ron Wyden, Sheldon Whitehouse, Tom Harkin, Patty Murray, Frank Lautenberg, Russ Feingold, Jeff Merkley, Ben Cardin, Michael Bennet, Dick Durbin, Chris Dodd, Jack Reed, Jeanne Shaheen, Barbara Boxer, Tom Carper, Debbie Stabenow, Robert Menendez and John Kerry.

Franken and Klo-ie need to stick to locking up their own state and reading a bit before they open their fat mouths. ANILCA Section 1209 states very clearly that no study for removal , nor any removal of Federal lands can take place in the State of Alaska without the approval of Congress. THIS IS THE LAW!!!!! Section 101 (d) goes on to state that ALL the Federal government’s quota for land acquisitions in the State of Alaska , whether they be for national monuments, national parks, wildlife refuges etc. have been met. That is specifically why they call this the NO MORE CLAUSE! and why Clinton rescinded his ANWR “monument” attempt. ANILCA protects Alaska from the enviro nut jobs like the comedian show man and his buddy Klo-ie that reside in the D camp on the Hill and with the dozens of hypocritical green groups that swindle money out of people worldwide meanwhile jumping in their SUVs and flying in their planes and typing on their PLASTIC keyboards. Hmmm must have just appeared out of thin air! Fancy that, energy from nothing???? Franken is a joke

I am a lifelong and Alaska Native Alaskan. I have supported the Alaska Native subsistence lifestyle and desire to retain the use of the lands of Alaska for decades of civic service. However, ANWR is a red herring. It has protections in place. It is HUGE, it is not THREATENED. We are facing a great many other threats that will destroy our Native life: The State of Alaska does not recognize Alaska Native Subsistence hunting and fishing (it is only protected on Federal Lands, and under great restrictions), our villages desperately need infrastructure such as high speed internet and alternative energy to survive. However, these needs are considered “earmarks” and now will be harder yet for our Congressional delegation to provide. ARCTIC OFFSHORE OIL development will be a much GREATER THREAT than any ANWR development will ever be. Mr. Franken and Friends, if you truly want to protect and help Alaska’s Native Peoples, write a letter against off shore development. Also, kill Pebble Mine in Western Alaska. And kill the very great threat of Sen. McCaskill’s (D) anti-Native federal contracting bill. This bill is a bad bill and will do more harm to AK Native’s economy than any development in ANWR. I am a political liberal who believes in common sense and this chest banging from both sides will not get us any closer to resolution of real problems.
