‘Family values’ Hackbarth found with gun in Planned Parenthood parking lot

State Rep. Tom Hackbarth, R-Bethel, was stopped by police last week in the Highland Park parking lot of Planned Parenthood after witnesses observed a gun on his hip, according to a report by the Star Tribune. Hackbarth said he was searching for a woman he met on an online dating website who he thought was with another man.
Hackbarth, who was the author of a constitutional amendment banning gay marriage, is still married to his wife, although they are separated. Hackbarth had a valid conceal and carry permit at the time he was stopped by police.
According to police records the incident happened on Nov. 16.
“I was not a jealous boyfriend,” Hackbarth told the Star Tribune. “I was just trying to check up on her. It’s totally a misunderstanding.”
The Pioneer Press reports reported on Hackbarth’s statements to police.
“I was looking for my girlfriend,” a police report quotes Hackbath as saying. “It was a stupid jealousy thing. I thought she was seeing another guy and I was going to check on her. She was suppose(d) to be at one of the shops over here, so I parked my truck and went to look for her car.”
He told the PiPress that he didn’t know the woman very well and didn’t have contact information for her. He said it was a common thing on the “three or four” dating websites he frequents.
“You don’t get a lot of responses when you say you’re separated,” he said.
In 2005, Hackbath was the author of a constitutional amendment banning same-sex marriage and its “legal equivalents.” He’s voted for the amendment several times.
On Wednesday the GOP caucus stripped him of his committee leadership positions.

Wow. First, he is jealous then he isn’t jealous. Next, she’s his girlfriend then he doesn’t even have contact information for her. Is this man stable enough to pack heat? I hope no one gets hurt.

This is so typical of the Republican “family values” crowd. I wonder how many of the “nice guys” businessmen johns involved with prostitution, were Republicans. I am not saying that Democrats do not do some sleazy things, any one remember Bill and Monica? But, it is the blatant hypocrisy of the Republicans that offends me. For someone like Hackbarth, to try to tell two people who love and honor each other, that they may not marry, while heteros like him run around is disgusting. If anyone were a danger to the instirution of marriage, its clowns like this guy.

Sounds like the “girlfriend” had him pegged for the loser that he is. Not giving him her phone number was a very good idea. It looks like she dodged a bullet.

This is way to funny and so typical of these morons claiming to be all about family values and protecting marriage from the evil gays. The only threat to heterosexual marriage comes from heterosexuals like this guy. Stop pointing the finger at gays and admit you’re screwing up marriage all by yourselves.
So why isn’t the Catholic Church up in arms at the actions of this guy? Why isn’t the Catholic Church putting out a DVD warning people about the threat to marriage within the heterosexual community?

Given this guy’s bad experience with the institution of marriage, it’s obvious to me that his legislation was simply intended to do the gays a big favor.

Lighten up and keep your focus on the pedophile priests. This guy is just a bit of a jerk in his off-duty time, he isn’t violating someone for the rest of their lives!
Help stop the threat to marriage….destroy heterosexual internet dating!

My latest favorite quotes from the “pro-marriage,” anti-gay rights crowd.
“…it’s obvious to me that his legislation was simply intended to do the gays a big favor.” -Dennis
And
“You don’t get a lot of responses when you say you’re separated,” he said. -Hackbarth
Cynical and sad.

This has nothing to do about the institution of marriage, this has to do with the fact that was stalking a woman he met online and in person once. Stalking laws have been a struggle for years to get in place because this is how it starts. Regardless of whether he had a gun or not or a conceal and carry license, he left Cedar, MN and drove to Highland Park to check on a woman he met once.
Last year 70000 women used domestic violence resources in MN (Alexandra House Facts and Figures on their website). Anoka County, where he resides, paid an estimated $3,392,404 in law enforcement, probation and court costs alone in 2008.(Also from Alexandra House website).
I applaud the St Paul Police for taking his weapon and holding it, I also applaud Zellerks actions until an investigation is complete.
I favor the conceal and carry law, but regardless if you are a constituent or an elected official, what St Paul Police did to protect a stalking victims life is to be commended.

Or, I was looking for my “girlfriend” We’d only met twice and I didn’t know her phone number or address.

Are we sure it was a woman he was waiting for in the alley?

Is this how gay marriage threatens straight marriage? He spends so much time attacking the marriage rights of others that he neglects his own to the point of failure.
Now he’s just an armed, self-righteous stalker.
He “has been suspended from any current and pending leadership roles within the House GOP Caucus… The suspension will remain in effect until the issue is fully resolved.”
The GOP has done a minimal amount of face-saving until this gets swept under the rug, then it all goes back to what passes for normal these days.

The $64,000 question is did he bring his handgun on the one and only “coffee” date he had with this woman before he later decided she was lying?
This is clearly a mild form of stalking when an individual tries to spy on another and harbors make believe fantasies about their feelings towards him.

Normal: Con voters vote for yet another clone. They’re consistent: unhinged voters elect unhinged representatives.

What a great idea, carrying a gun while walking around the grounds of Planned Parenthood. And someone should tell Hackbarth that Planned Parenthood is not a store. Hackbarth’s excuse leads me to suspect that there is no “girlfriend”. The man couldn’t he even remember which online dating service he “found” her on, let alone get her phone number.
