A lone billboard portrait of an American soldier, part of a series that CBS Outdoor backed out of last week, will go up today on University and Cleveland avenues in St. Paul. Clear Channel agreed to mount one of the images from artist Suzanne Opton’s “Soldier” project for one month at a cost of about $1,800.

Opton had a $2,000 contract with CBS Outdoor for four billboards for a minimum of two weeks, but CBS canceled last week, just before the RNC, saying the soldiers in the images appear to be deceased. A CBS Outdoor billboard displayed one of the “Soldier” images in Denver during the DNC.

Opton had to reformat the image for the more squarish dimension’s of the available billboard, according to Jack Becker, executive director of Forecast Public Art, the project’s local sponsor. He said the billboard is most visible while traveling along University Avenue from St. Paul to Minneapolis and from Cleveland Avenue heading north. It replaces a billboard showing a pair of state troopers and the message “Designated drivers save lives.”
