Family Council to spend $4.71 million to ‘ignite’ gay marriage battle
Thursday, January 27, 2011 at 9:00 am
The Minnesota Family Council has launched its “Ignite” campaign to “achieve cultural transformation” over the next two years. According to a brochure put out by the group, MFC plans to spend $4.71 million with the main aim of getting a constitutional amendment banning relationship rights for same-sex couples onto the ballot and passed by Minnesota voters.
“‘Ignite’ is a two-year plan designed to fan the embers of November 2010 into a lasting movement built to achieve enduring cultural transformation,” the brochure states, “starting with passage of a constitutional amendment to preserve marriage as God designed it, the foundation of strong families and a strong society.”
MFC also believes it was picked by God for such a mission. “You see, God has uniquely positioned Minnesota Family Council (MFC),” the group writes. “God has blessed MFC with the unique opportunity to be a catalyst for enduring cultural transformation rooted in spiritual renewal, for the glory of Christ and the good of our state.”
The overarching plan will have three branches: Education, legislation, and accountability.
The education track will train leaders “of all ages and backgrounds” in a “biblical worldview” and activate those leaders using a budget of $1.71 million.
The legislation track includes $1.04 million to pass an anti-gay marriage amendment. The group also plans legislation to make getting a divorce more difficult and to ban taxpayer funding for abortions.
“Cultural transformation requires a system of laws that remain true to the vision of our Founding Fathers, rooted in a biblical worldview,” the group said. “MFC’s legislative programs will not only ensure there’s a voice for timeless values at the Capitol but also engage the faith community across Minnesota to advocate on behalf of those values.”
The group plans to spend $2.5 million at election time to get out the vote and make “elected leaders be accountable for their actions.”
The programs “serve as an antidote for political spin to ensure that Christians are faithful to vote, based on their faith, on Election Day.”
The brochure includes an endorsement by Republican state Sen. Warren Limmer of Maple Grove, who has already told media outlets that he will be introducing an anti-gay marriage amendment. “There is no one else that does the work of the Minnesota Family Council. They are absolutely vital,” he said.
Here’s the Family Council’s brochure outlining their plans for the upcoming session:

“The group also plans legislation to make getting a divorce more difficult”
I sure hope they present their entire agenda as one, big package. Something tells me the above might not play well with the vast majority of Minnesotans. Let’s face it, divorce is a big part of the hetero marriage game. People like their sports. Don’t mess with sports.

If you play with fire, you will get burned.
Come on, Minnesota! You are not sheeple. Think this one through. You can use your reasoning power to come to the right decision on equal rights.

The Minnesota Family Council does not care at all about families. It’s a Republican get-out-the-vote organization, period. Let’s make sure they are treated as a political organization under the law and all donor names are made public, tax-exempt status denied when appropriate, etc.

In this time of economic challenges, how can a group like this put such obscene amounts of money into an initiative to take away equal rights from others born differently from themselves. This money could go towards aiding the homeless, starving, and impoverished in Minnesota, the nation, the world. This is TRUE EVIL!
There is such an intense vendetta of the ego against Gays by these people that they cannot see the log in their eyes because they are too busy looking at the speck’s in their neighbors and families. It is in God’s hands, and like the mega churches, they will “reap what they sow”!

What I fail to understand is why these folks think they’re entitled to make the law conform to their beliefs. Other than the childish control games, of course. We are a secular republic, as anyone who reads the Constitution can see.

oh, oh, oh…….
I had an even BETTER idea!
Family Council folks – are you listening??
Let’s go one step further: Before you can get a divorce, you must be a member of a MN Family Council approved church. You must also go through at least a year of marriage counseling offered by clergy of that church. No exception. Can’t get a divorce without this.
I’m sure Minnesotans would be on board with this 100%. Do it!! You’ll be even more popular then you are now.

Institutionalized hate is very disheartening. The well being of people must always trump doctrine.

This is an extreme evangelical group tied to Ugandan politics and Ed Silvoso. The movement is global, and dominionist groups involved in Uganda are also active in the U.S. Jeff Sharlet has written about involvement of The Family in Uganda and their efforts for more than two decades to impact both the economic and religious trajectory of that nation’s development. Kapya Kaoma has documented the exportation of homophobia by American evangelists in his report at The Public Eye, including Americans partnering with vocally anti-gay Anglican Archbishops in Africa. Bruce Wilson’s Transforming Uganda shows the role played by charismatic dominionists associated with networks of apostles and prophets of the New Apostolic Reformation, and their promotional media and organizations including: the Transformations movie series; Transformation organizations, such as Ed Silvoso’s International Transformation Network (ITN); and the Seven Mountains campaign. However, the latter group overlaps considerably with the former.

It should be noted that as a result of their handywork in Uganda, that yesterday a GLBT representative was murdered at his home yesterday after a week full of ‘strange occurrences’, hacking of his email, another attempted home invasion, and an eviction. They have blood on their hands, and I bet that Minnesota has NO PLACE for this type of fundamentalist christian-extremism.

Then there’s Tony Perkins and Hate Group “The Family” Research Council, (mothership to Minnesota Family Council) who last year paid lobbyists $25,000 to convince members of Congress to block a planned resolution denouncing Uganda’s gay death penalty bill.

There is a much bigger story here to all this “Transformation” speak.

Wendy,
Thanks for your great info. I wasn’t aware that Perkins had lobbied against that resolution. I had already concluded he was a Christian extremist, but didn’t realize just how ugly, hate-filled and violent his attitude about GLBT people was.

4.7 mill? Really? this is what a christian group thinks is the right thing to do with 4.7 mill? How much has this group given towards the fight for hunger? housing?
They wonder why they are considered a hate group?
I call for everyone to write on the mfc facebook page , to write at their blog, to call out to the sheeples that follow them to open their eyes and see what they do!
For if they loose congregation they will loose power, and thats all this is about.

Funny how that “Dennis” character can peg the moods of emotional states of people he cannot see or hear when they leave comments here. Funnier still that HE thinks (if it’s a he) that this group has every right to throw this money down the toilet in attempts to FORCE others to live as they see fit. Yeah, I can promise ya one thing: This isn’t gonna go over well. But it’s hard to get the attention of “christian” hate groups like this when they’re so busy sucking satan’s dick that they don’t even have the time to hear what’s being said about their “campaigns” to control everyone.

Because an anti-gay marriage ban effects us all, everywhere, I deserve to know who is financing the disgusting bigots who run the Family Council. If you’re an anti-gay campaign donor, and seek to prevent or repeal marriage equality, the least you could do is have the courage of your convictions, and stand behind your financial donations, you bunch of Republican Bigot Wimps.
This fag would stuff you all in a trash can, and kick the hell out of it!
BTW, Republican, anti-gay, Christian bigots; Fuck You!

Human beings have been getting married long before any Religions existed, so I do not see the problem with allowing Homosexuals to get married today, when they were getting married thousands of years ago.

I’m no biblical scholar, but I have a pretty good idea of what Jesus would do with nearly five million bucks. I think it might involve feeding the hungry or something like that….
Comment posted January 28, 2011 @ 10:48 am
I’m with Shannon. Take that $5 million and build a shelter or feed the hungry. Clothe and educate some children here in Minnesota, or fund an immunization clinic.
It drives me nuts how these groups have all this cash to burn, and yet the ones doing Jesus’ REAL work in the community — and by that I don’t mean specifically Christian organizations – I mean following his example of being charitable, giving, merciful, taking care of ones’ neighbors, loving the sinners, feeding the hungry and caring for the meek — those are the ones who struggle for every dollar and regularly squeeze blood from every turnip and stone they are given.
This kind of behavior would make King Solomon blush.

A new conservative Jesus is on the scene. He’s a little different from what you may remember growing up:
-He doesn’t give a damn if you die early due to not being able to afford medical care–he blames you for not socking away the $150,000 ahead of time in anticipation of getting cancer.
-He isn’t especially concerned that grandparents are eating cat food since their retirement benefits aren’t sufficient to cover their expenses. It’s their fault–they didn’t work hard enough to achieve riches when they were younger.
-If you’re gay and you get beaten up at school, His response is: “I didn’t make you that way. You brought it on yourself.”
Praise!

Eric,
And don’t forget: He wouldn’t advocate for government-run social programs to do his work. You’re supposed to do that personally, not abdicate to some bureaucrat.
Comment posted January 28, 2011 @ 12:37 pm
Let’s not forget, this is not just about our gay neighbors. Now they want to tell us we have to stay married, by changing divorce laws. What’s next, changes to the tax code to put more women back in the home?

I’m not so sure about that, Dennis. But I’m absolutely sure wouldn’t condemn a government that decided to do any of that.

Well, I do love the scar of a bible verse on the cover-page of the MFC’s “Ignite” brochure.
However, apparently the people who hunger and thirst for righteousness sake are only filled because only a few sentences down…
“Blessed are those who are persecuted for righteousness’ sake, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.” Matthew 5.10
Thank you MFC, apparently myself, and every other GLBTQ person inherit the kingdom of heaven. Next time you decide to throw religion about so willingly, read a couple of verses down.

@David – Government social programs have the unfortunate (to the Right) characteristic of helping anyone who needs it, rather than making Guilt and Jeebus preconditions; this is why religious conservatives hate them and have spent 30 years dismantling them.
Comment posted January 31, 2011 @ 11:46 am
Katie, my point is simply, if you read the words and deeds of Jesus as written in the Bible, you’ll not find anything that could be construed as “Thou shalt not care for the poor/sick with anything other than individual, private charity.”
Comment posted January 31, 2011 @ 12:30 pm
Katie,
It ties in with the concept that the “poor” are morally deficiant or defective. Many of the “compasionate conservatives” equate wealth with morality and lack of wealh with immorality.
Don’t expect logic from the same people who think that the current unemployed people are just “too lazy” to find a job.
Comment posted February 1, 2011 @ 9:49 pm
Isn’t it sad that there are enough gullible rubes out there that this group is willing to spend 4.7 million dollars on the fundamentalist equivalent of “Squirrel!” Meanwhile, all the fundamentalists and sexually insecure Minnesotans who fall for this will find their property taxes soaring, their services declining, and their jobs walking away. It’s amazing how people can be so easily manipulated against their own best interests with just a little hate.
Comment posted February 2, 2011 @ 12:30 pm
David – I make a point of disconnecting “Jesus” (the Biblical figure who may or may not have existed and was a pretty aggressive radical reformer for his day, not an establishment figure in the least nor one who would put up with disempowering the already powerless to score points with religious authorities) from “Jeebus” (the fictional creation of right-wing Leviticans who think that religion should be all about oppressing those unlike you rather than finding one’s own way closer to the divine spirit of the universe).
If Jesus appeared today, he’d show up as a poor Latina trans lesbian.

MFC you are doing a great job bringing more hatred to this already fractured world. Want just a spot of proof? Look above at all the hatred going back and forth between people above. I have one question. How would gay marriage hurt or even affect your life or even society? I would love to know how much money has been spent on “anti” legislation that brings hate to our society. And just dream what that could have been spent on for the better of our state and country.
“starting with passage of a constitutional amendment to preserve marriage as God designed it, the foundation of strong families and a strong society.”
This quote puts so many thougthts and questions in my head!
Was our great country USA founded on freedom of religion or not? Meaning that anyone has the right to choose what they want to beleive and who they want to beleive in. This organization is trying to pour upon us their religious beliefs they obtained from their holy book the Bible. Even though everybody in this great nation does not covet the Bible as their way of direction in life.
Just answer the question about how Gay marriage would affect your life, society or our country.
Comment posted February 14, 2011 @ 3:40 pm
The MFC will spend 5 million dollars at least this year to try and stop gay marriage.
Then they will spend probably the same amount on anti choice as well, but only secondary to the first.
They are pro family as long as your family looks like theirs.
They are pro choice, until birth then be damn with you.

Their money would be better spent helping poor people, many of whom have been hurt by the conservative policies of the last 30 years.
Why doesn’t the MFC mind their own marriages, and leave other people alone? The idea that a gay marriage would somehow destroy the institution of marriage is preposterous. This is about denying people rights, not about defending anything.
