Bachmann backs off plan to cut veterans benefits
Friday, February 04, 2011 at 12:14 pm
Rep. Michele Bachmann took a lot of heat last week from veterans groups that criticized her plan to trim the deficit by cutting back on veterans benefits among other government programs. In a statement on Friday, Bachmann said she has removed those cuts from consideration.
The Veterans of Foreign Wars vowed to fight Bachmann on the issue. “No way, no how, will we let this proposal get any traction in Congress,” said Richard Eubank of the VFW last week. “There are certain things you do not do when our nation is at war, and at the top of that list is not caring for our wounded and disabled servicemen and women when they return home.”
The uproar seemed to have caused Bachmann to change her tune.
“One point on my discussion list was a $4.5 billion proposal that would affect payments made to our veterans,” Bachmann said in a statement. “That has received a lot of attention and I have decided that it should be removed from consideration. The problem of government spending must be solved, but not on the backs of our nation’s war heroes. I have always been a proud supporter of the United States military and I continue to stand with our veterans. In the months ahead I look forward to working with our Veterans Service Organizations to ensure that we fulfill our commitments to those who sacrificed so much in their brave service for our country.”

We could actually ask those who have benefited most from society to actually pay their fair share? But I guess it’s great to ask vets to sacrifice more, instead of asking the wealthy to sacrifice even a little.

ms bachman
do you have to be a war hero to be a veteran
i thought the citizen rules and the Representative represents the people
how in your right mind would you even consider cutting veteran services in such a crisis time for vets it really did show your real leadership quality,s
i also see your doing some traveling lately how about a stop in to the 6th Congressional district in Minnesota , i can send you directions if you need them
but more so i guess i should thank you for listening to the people as that is what a representative is hired to do. and then backing down from that part of your proposal
did you really think you would just slip that on by with out notice or as the saying goes any news is good news kinda like paris hilton or lindsey lohen
please don’t take it as offensive they just came to mind
but what i don’t understand
why do you keep sticking your foot in your mouth you were a really good Representative at one time what happened
the post of how will we pay for vets if our country is bankrupt
i look at it how will we have a country if we don,t have people in the military , who then become veterans ,
veteran benefits are becoming an issue of whether young people join the military , and many people who serve in the national guard re upping ,
many went proudly only to return to foreclosures on there home , white collar criminals taking advantage of their family’s, lost jobs mental disorders or dead ect
ms bachman your foot is out of your mouth now. So why not support the vets by promoting a bill that would fund more opportunity for veterans returning home ,
or just plain old veterans who served, and need help re adjusting , it has been proven that good old fashion talk therapy goes along way if it is done very soon after a vet returns home or just finishes his enlistment contract , that cant cost to much can it
but i know a person who has a sexual preference maybe you ms bachman could write a bill together that would help veterans. how about it you know how to reach me
lets see what you can do it cant be hard you have the house control make me proud

For right wingers, “flip-flopping” on issues is only tolerated if you are are right-winger. None of this, “Michele Bachmann was against veterans before she was for it” stuff. And they cannot even see the hypocrisy,

An angry UFF DA!
ray, never mind Dennis. Stay focused on your recovery. Hang out with the right people. I so hope that the day will come very soon when you no longer hate yourself for what you are, but accept who you are with serenity and grace.
As I sometimes remind myself, “This shit doesn’t – and CAN NOT – last. Just keep plugging away!”

On the issue of balancing budgets, our reps need to have a difinitive plan and they need to stick to that plan. This episode of waffling by Michelle is proof that she has no clue what she is doing at all. When it come to the budget you don’t throw ideas out there and see what the reaction of the voters is. It is obvious she has no plan to balance our budget or to reduce our deficit and probably no desire to do so. The people of her district must not care at all about what this country stands for. All they want is someone that says jesus and god in every other sentence. I hope her district gets jerrymandered out of existance.

i didn’t want to make another post,
i felt compelled to do so
a true democracy is, in a nut shell
the majority rules while protecting the rights of the minority interest . [the constitution ]
not the minority person ,the minority interest
so our representatives need to throw ideas on the table and then get feed back
thank God bachman got a lot of feed back , she can take the hit , i am glad she showed her true ideology for us all to see , most vets are republican or lean to the right ,
well not any more with bachman , she will never understand the sacrifice of a vet
i believe it will be along time for any politician to touch this and there are a lot of vets in her district talking about it , what was she thinking , who knows
she kicks you when your down , a true distinction of a bad Representative
thanks Lane and Marie , i appreciate the kind words ,
i am a vet who got caught in the middle of some very heavy political cross fire 30 years ago

Not to argue trivials, and I am not trying to anger you Ray, but we are more of a republic than a democracy. Yes, america has been trending more towards democracy since its inception, but to call us a “true democracy” is false. The budget will not be fixed by throwing ideas against the wall. We need strong and intelligent leadership in congress and I believe that Michelle is the opposite of that. How any person could think that cutting veterans benefits would ever be a solution is assinine.

Once again, Bachmann offered policy without thinking it through. Constantly backtracking is not leadership, it is trial-and-error. She is like a child testing the boundaries of what she can get away with before the adults call her on it.

Beyond the moral responsibility I believe the Nation has to take care of its veterans I would offer that there is a substantive reason for the government to honor its promises to veterans… that reason is the “all volunteer force”. I am a 32 year veteran of the Army. In the late 70s when I enlisted, I was made certain promises for a pension, health care, etc, if I honorably served a certain term (20 years). Even then, I fully understood that the “American people” were in essence paying me to go places and do things that they didn’t want their sons and daughters to go or do. Better a few more dollars in taxes to pay for me and my “brothers” to risk our lives, miss our kids birthdays and holidays, to bleed and sometimes die rather than ask little Johnny and Sally to shoulder the responsibility concomitant to the benefits of citizenship.
Of course the probelm with this arrangement is that it relies on trust… the American people trust that I will do what they ask of me… I trust that they will fullfil their obligation. The minute Congress begins tinkering with these promises, proving that the volunteer military cannot trust the government, the pool of volunteers will begin to dry up.
Of course that may not be such a bad thing. Fire up the draft boards… I’m sure the Afghan War will last long enough to let all of our kids have a shot at being a combat veteran.

You retreat and change your tune when your precious position looks to be over-run by popular opinion. America will always support her warriors. If you even had one family member who served, you would never of dared to THINK about cutting the benefits.
America was born on the backs of fighting patriots, we fought for the union, defended the people, and you wish to steal the support of the U.S. from them. After they have already given an arm, a leg, a marriage, or their life.
