Gay conservatives call out Pawlenty over Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell
Wednesday, February 09, 2011 at 8:00 am
The Log Cabin Republicans and GOProud criticized former Gov. Tim Pawlenty for stating that he would reinstate the military’s ban on openly serving gay and lesbian servicemembers. Pawlenty told members of the Family Leader, a group that opposes rights for same-sex couples in Iowa, that if he was elected president in 2012, he would pull funding for the repeal of Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell. He also said he’s unsure if gays and lesbians should be allowed in the military at all.
The groups said Pawlenty was pandering to social conservatives to shore up a floundering presidential campaign.
Here’s video of Pawlenty’s statements in Iowa (story continues after video):
Pawlenty then doubled down on his call to defund the repeal.
Think Progress asked him, “Do you think gays should be allowed to serve in the military at all, or do you think it’s detrimental to unit cohesion?”
Pawlenty responded, “I really defer to the military leaders to a large degree on this issue. I supported maintaining Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell.”
GOProud, a group of LGBT conservatives and a sponsor of the CPAC conference Pawlenty will speak at this weekend, belittled Pawlenty’s campaign. Chris Barron, chairman of the board of GOProud, released this statement:
I understand that Pawlenty is trying hard to get people to pay attention to his campaign. Its certainly a challenge for someone with such little stature in the conservative movement to compete with high profile conservative leaders like Sarah Palin, Newt Gingrich, Herman Cain, etc. Unfortunately for Pawlenty, comments like this simply show how totally out-of-touch he is with the issues that rank and file conservatives care about. If he wants to show he is a committed social conservative he would be much better served talking about the need to defund Planned Parenthood, end federal funding for abortion, reign in an out of control judiciary and support for a parents rigths amendment to protect home-schoolers.
The Log Cabin Republicans also dinged Pawlenty for his positions on Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell.
“Governor Pawlenty’s comments fly in the face of both overwhelming public opinion and common sense,” said R. Clarke Cooper, Log Cabin Republicans executive director. “Congress voted in a bipartisan majority in December to enact the clear will of the American people, which demanded that ‘Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell’ be stricken from the books. The Secretary of Defense, the Joint Chiefs of Staff, and leadership throughout the Pentagon along with Congressional leaders, including Senator John McCain, are now in full support of implementing open service. The debate on this matter is done, and that Governor Pawlenty continues to fight the end of this failed and unconstitutional policy demonstrates that he is willing to put personal ambition and political pandering ahead of the priorities of the American people.”

See, this is why conservatives of the normal persuation don’t like these guys. There are a lot of conservatives who support gays in the military, just as there are a lot who don’t. There are conservatives who support abortion rights. And those who don’t. There are conservatives who support a flat tax. And those who don’t.
But it’s rare to find conservatives calling another conservative out for their point of view. It’s rude and very unconservative-like because it violates the 11th commandment. Which causes everyone to question some people’s bonefides because whenever it happens it seems to be from these guys.

GOProud and its chairman Chris Barron are somewhat of a joke in the LGBT community given their focus on gay issues like “defunding Planned Parenthood, repealing health care reform, blocking gun control, and abolishing the Department of Education … defense of constitutional originalism, cuts in corporate taxes, support for school vouchers, and opposition to federal marriage reform.”
GOProud is also opposed to ENDA.

Yes, Dennis, it is not a pretty sight to watch the infighting between extremist conservatives that are so out of touch with mainstream America even as some of us thinking liberals bring out the popcorn …

Beating a drum on cultural issues already decided is what this candidate deems important? Smart voters want to her about jobs-improving the economy-bring back prosperity, Mr. Candidate-what is the plan for that?

What he meant to say was that we should pay special deference to those who share his prejudice, even if he needs to hunt to find them.
When Bush was busy driving our military into the ground, he had to lower the morals threshold, raise the signing bonuses, and prey on the desperately unemployed to fill the ranks – yet that did not stop him from drumming out critical personnel and other dedicated patriots just because of their orientation.
If Pawlenty got rid of all gays, how much more would the standards have to be lowered and the price tag raised? While he’s at it, he could go whole-elephant and purge women from the military too. It would certainly cut down on rape in the ranks, which should improve unit cohesion.
Far be it from us to demand honor, respect, and professionalism in the ranks. That would be too much like a world-class military.

“If Pawlenty got rid of all gays, how much more would the standards have to be lowered and the price tag raised?”
That’s actually pretty funny, zera lee.
If it was up to me, the combat arms would consists of only single men (straight of course, we want warriors). No wives, no children to add cost to the operation or to distract the warrior.
All other jobs could be handled by civilians. Even homosexual ones.
Elect me in 2012

I should mention that this was suggested by the Marine Commandant during the Clinton administration in reaction to his observation that the military was becoming just another uniformed government job.

So then, if my two sons (who are young children now) turn out to be straight, then when they’re 18 they won’t have any value to anyone anymore and should become “warriors?” I would beg to differ on that.

@Amy, that’s not what I said. The military is an all-volunteer force. If your boys want to get married and have children while they’re young nothing wuld prevent them from doing so.
But if they wanted to join the armed forces and fight for their country (not join up to get a government job with life-long benefits) they would have to wait until they got out before they could get married and have children. Assuming they survived, of course.
I was in the submarine service. Being on patrol under the sea for months at a time is a young man’s job. A few men on board were married, but they were the older ones and they were short-timers. Same goes for the Navy SEALS. When you have a family anxiously waiting at home for you it prevents you from taking risks … risks that may be needed in battle.

I forgot to add, that we actually had to get written permission from the commanding officer if we wanted to get married. When I did it, he made me wait until I had less than a year to go in my enlistment before he’d sign the papers.

Dennis, once again you have no history knowledge at all.
The oldest Warriors …. Do your research on Ancient Greek Warriors.
Do your research on ancient Roman Warriors.
But, that would have a lot of benefit to back yourself up in your theories of what makes a great warrior. Gay people of those times, didn’t raise families in most cases, they had the love and attention of other males, and therefore would make the best warriors.
:)

dennis, if you had your way there would be so few volunteers and so many obligations that you would have to re-institute the draft. Have fun with that.

Why would anyone who happens to be gay join a political party which openly expresses disgust and loathing of gays in its party platform and legislative agenda?
Isn’t that kind of like being Jewish and supporting the American Nazi Party or the Ku Klux Klan?
Some folks just aren’t very smart..
