Bachmann opposes tax deduction for breast pumps

Says Michele Obama's campaign to promote breastfeeding is part of a 'hard left agenda'
By Andy Birkey

Rep. Michele Bachmann lashed out at First Lady Michelle Obama on Tuesday over her promotion of breastfeeding, particularly among black women, to curb obesity. On Laura Ingraham’s radio show, Bachmann said that Obama’s campaign — and an IRS change that makes breast pumps tax deductible — constituted a “nanny state” and that it was part of her “hard left agenda.”

Michelle Obama said last week, “We’re working to promote breastfeeding, especially in the black community, where 40 per cent of our babies never get breastfed at all, even in the first weeks of life, and we know that babies that are breastfed are less likely to be obese as children.”

The first lady wants to encourage employers to be more open to women who are breastfeeding. The IRS also announced on Tuesday that breast pumps are now considered as a tax-deductible expense for Flex Spending Accounts along with other over-the-counter medical items such as pain relievers, bandages and contact lens supplies.

But, on Ingraham’s show, Bachmann was having none of it.

“I think this is very consistent with where the hard left is coming from. For them government is the answer to every problem. Clearly they are wrong because more spending won’t do it,” she said.

Bachmann continued, “I’ve given birth to five babies and I breastfed every single one of these babies. To think that government has to go out and buy my breast pump for my babies. You wanna talk about the nanny state? I think we just got the new definition of a nanny.”

Ingraham asked if she thought that Michelle Obama’s push for breastfeeding was an indication of a run for U.S. Senate.

“I think she is really committed to the hard left agenda, more than anything else. Can you imagine if Laura Bush was doing this? The media would be after her.”

And thanks to Bachmann they are after the first lady.

Megan Kelly of Fox News provided “Breaking News” on Tuesday morning about Bachmann’s statements immediately following her interview with Ingraham.

Fox contributor Sandy Rios said she had concerns about Mrs. Obama’s proposal because it’s being promoted in the African American community. Rios is the former head of the religious right organization Concerned Women for America and current head of the Culture Campaign, a group “dedicated to involving citizens in the culture war.”

“You have to remember that 75 percent of American women already breast feed,” said Rios. “We are talking about a problem that is specifically in the black community and so for you to change federal law and IRS regulations and start forcing businesses to make accommodations for nursing women to promote it in the black community is the problem that I have with it and I agree with Michele this is the nanny state on steroids.”

How is it any social concern or statement has to be a “Feftist Social Agenda?” If a breast pump is a bad tax deduction. ( not a tax credit) then shouldn’t children also be a bad deduction or credit also? We certainly don’t want to encourage the minority communities to be good parents.

Correct me if I’m wrong, but “tax deductible” does not equate “buying the breast pump”. I’m sure that Michelle Bachmann and her Tea Party cronies relish and enjoy EVERY tax deductible opportunities they have and would be hooting and hollering if anyone tried to take them away. Hypocrites!

does michele bachmann even understand the concept of an FSA? the government wouldn’t be buying anyone’s breast pump, but, if you chose to enroll in an FSA, the money you put aside from your paycheck to spend on said breast pump (and glasses, your kids braces, dependent care costs, or other things that are covered) would not be taxed.

as far as rios’s argument, just because 75% of women breastfeed already doesn’t mean that businesses and workplaces are accomodating to breastfeeding mothers. find something else to be outraged about.

Breastfeeding is the most natural way to bond with your child, and provide a great start to having a healthy, happy child. Breast Pumps are extremely expensive, especially the double pumps that seem to be a necessity for women who have to work or do errands or anything else that doesn’t include just sitting at home. I think having it as a tax deduction is great! What no one is talking about is how most pediatricians are amped and ready to take the baby off the breast and put them straight to formula bottle feed as soon as any kind of “complication” arises. We wouldn’t have a whole generation of unattached parents and children had this trend never started. If the First Lady is supporting this as a part of a movement for the black community, no one should be upset, as those ARE the women, amongst other minorities, who are pushed to formula feed their infants! (Oh and for the record, those complaining about more spending being the issue, I didn’t see any of those complaints when the tax cuts for the rich were extended!)

AS Forrest Gump stated so eloquently…”Stupid is as Stupid does.”

Tax Cuts for the very wealthy!!! Good!!

Breast Pump deduction, BAD!!!!!

This is going to win a lot of women voters for Michele Bachmann.

There she goes again!

Doesn’t Michele Bchmann have better things to do with her time than go on the attack against the First Lady? What a POOR excuse for a member of Congress. I pity the fools in Minnesota’s 6th CD for voting this hateful woman in. “Nanny state” my ass!!

Michele Bachmann has been sucking off the Government tit, (pun intended) for many years now. As a Foster Mother of 23 children, as a State Senator from Minnesota for 8 years, and now Congresswoman for going on 5 years. She also likes those Farm subsidies …

In the Webster’s Dictionary definition of HPYOCRITE…it says Michele Bachmann

If Michele Bachmann dislikes this country and “Nanny State” so much, she should resign from Congress and go draw a paycheck from a REAL job like the rest of us do. Her Sh!t stinks, people!!!

Let me see if I understand. Bachmann believes that the government “intrudes” too much into its citizen’s lives by (among other things) taking too much of its citizen’s money. Putting money into a pre-tax dollar medical benefits account decreases one’s tax liability and thus decreases this “intrusiveness”. So, how is adding breast pumps to the list of approved pre-tax dollars expenditures (a list which includes co-pays for Viagra) a bad thing?

Bachmann represents an extremely conservative, overwhelmingly white district that includes St. Cloud University, the site of regular outbreaks of anti-antisemitism, anti-Muslim and anti-black behaviors. I don’t recall hearing Bachmann ever even comment on these attacks much less condemn them.

This is not about breast pumps. This is about race generally and the current occupants of The White House in particular.

I’ve gone through a very long period of finding Bachmann so ridiculous she was fun to listen to – just for the comedy. I’m over that. Now I find her sickening. For the life of me I can not fathom why someone like this is allowed to exist.

So a nanny state takes away choices. Which is what Bachmann is doing by trying to deny women the use of THEIR OWN MONEY. No one is saying these women MUST breastfeed, Michelle Obama is just helping to get more information and support out there. Another thing that I think Bachmann is forgetting is that in low-income areas where formula is being used, who is paying for the formula? It’s expensive! Many of the families that she’s promoting breastfeeding to are likely low-income and on WIC or food stamps. Our tax dollars are buying it. Breastfeeding, other than the pump and some storage bags, is free! So by Bachmann trying to deny women the ability to buy pumps (again, with their own money) she is costing the government more money. I’m all for women being able to choose how to feed their baby, but it goes both ways.

Wow, what a “liberal” view it is to promote family values, and economy serving, health promoting of breast feeding. How are we to stand such a liberal view of such a traditional family function like breatfeeding.

wow.

How does making them tax deductible make it a nanny state?? It’s not like they’re GIVING them away.

If anything, they’ll SAVE money in the long run because there will be less hospital costs/ doctor visits incurred with babies on medicaid coming in with colds, etc. since it’s proven that breastfed babies are healthier.

“I’ve given birth to five babies and I breastfed every single one of these babies. To think that government has to go out and buy my breast pump for my babies.”

Oh sweetie. If you had another brain, it would be lonely. The government isn’t buying anyone a breast pump. It’s merely making it eligible for pre-tax spending through flexible benefit accounts — just like like cough syrup and band-aids. Of course, if you think those shouldn’t be tax-exempt, then you should a) stop using cough syrup and bandaids, and b) eliminate the benefit thereby raising taxes. Twist on that sticking point, honey!

P.S. I’m guessing you weren’t working anywhere while you were breast feeding your spawn.

The mere idea of a FSA is a conservative one, you put your OWN money into it, and BUY THINGS WITH IT. Only medical items, and devices can be bought with it. Why is a breast pump any different than a c-pap machine? The government does not regulate or changes an item when it becomes FSA eligible. If you go to a big box store say Sam’s club, you actually get labels on things that say FSA or not. And since the beginning of the year, many many many things are not FSA eligible anymore.

Nanny state? This woman is so far from the right, she is so far from the right of right even! she is out there hundreds of miles right of the right. Does she understand that the form of governement she endorses is gun toting, militia? Does anyone besides me see this and relates it to a cult like, wako like lifestyle? wow

Bachmann is a joke of a representative. She wants to defund Planned Parenthood, which would increase pregnancies when women do not have access to low cost birth control, family planning, healthcare. Basing her conclusions on a Brietbart-esque film sting that got a P.P. fired, she wants to defund P.P. . By her logic, we need to defund Congress too when a member makes serious, ethical errors.

Bachmann is the same ‘nanny stater’ that charged the American taxpayer $14k for her teaparty. This hypocritical woman sucks so much money out of government, both state and federal while condemning a deduction this a breast pump. Sick, sick, sick.

This is really eating at me today. Lets scream and yell that the left wants nothing but to charge more taxes! but the minute there is a tax deduction then the leftest is a nanny state?

Again, the GOP talks out of both sides of their err Mouths. just to keep it clean.

I really think that it could be an identical bill that GOP pushes, but if a DFL’s Voice is on it, then she would scream STOP.

Its all about being partisan and being right and in power. To only have ONE in power is to have dictatorship.

It is time we stop finding things to oppose based solely on “the other party”. Seriously. Opposing making breastfeeding more accessible to all women is like opposing puppies and sunshine. Ms. Bachmann needs to just come clean and admit she is an ignorant racist. If a white conservative would have come up with the idea (supported by most well-educated pediatiricians and common sense) that breastfeeding should be encouraged because “god wants it that way”, she would be all for it. Instead, because Michelle Obama supports breastfeeding for all women, including, gasp, minorities and underserved populations, and we become a “nanny state”. Breastfeeding is a lot less expensive than formula, encourages good health for all humans, and increases brain development. What are you afraid of, Ms. Bachmann? More intelligent and healthy black people like the Obamas?

You kids better pay attention in class otherwise you’ll end up really stupid like Bachman and Palin! Little cupcakes with nothing between the ears! The Taliban is now in charge in America. You’re fricking kidding me – the Taliban um t party wants to tell women this too? But you know a lot of what the far right objects to is the fact that the president and first lady are of a different skin color. They’re enraged by it and they cloak it in things like saying “breast pumps bad” – but really show they have no understanding of insurance, or tax code, or most anything to do with real life. “No black is going to tell me what to do” kind of a thing. What a racist comment – saying that would only benefit black women.
Obviously Bachman was a member of the welfare state while supposedly breastfeeding her supposed children. If she had used a pump she would be singing a different tune. Signed, someone who actually works for a living and is really really tired of stupid people trying to tell me what to do and say they’re trying to get government out of my back pocket. Well get the hell out of my brassiere too.

I have no problem whatsoever with breast pumps being tax-deductible, but if you actually read the tax code you can see where they were coming from. Deductible medical expenses are supposed to be for things used to treat or prevent disease, not promote health. That is why things like vitamins and health club dues are not covered either. I’m not saying I agree with this, but this is how the tax code is written. If we are opening up the door to expanding the definition of medical expenses to items that improve our health, I want to deduct my treadmill and other fitness equipment.
