Bachmann will ‘look to the Lord’ in deciding 2012 presidential bid

Rep. Michele Bachmann told Pat Robertson’s Christian Broadcasting Network Friday that she will “look to the Lord” for guidance on whether she’ll run for the Republican nomination for president in 2012. Bachmann, whose activism in the tea party movement and among conservative evangelical Christians has her visiting most parts of the country, has repeatedly said that her faith would guide her decision to seek higher office.

“I think it will be an inner assurance more than anything of what I am supposed to do,” she said of contemplating a run for president. She said she and her husband “look to the Lord for guidance, and I can’t say enough how important that’s been to us to give us that rock of assurance on which path we should go.”

“We’re strong people of faith,” she said. “My husband and I gave our lives to the Lord when we were 16 years of age, and so that’s been a long time now. … And I can’t say enough how important that’s been to us to give us that rock of assurance on which path we should go.”

In 2009, Bachmann made a similar statement to World Net Daily.

“When I have sensed that the Lord is calling me to do something, I’ve said yes to it. But I will not seek a higher office if God is not calling me to do it. That’s really my standard… If I am called to serve in that realm I would serve… But if I am not called, I wouldn’t do it.”

And in 2006, just before her first successful run for Congress, she said:

God then called me to run for the United States Congress, and I thought ‘What in the world will that be for?’ and my husband said ‘You need to do this,’ and I wasn’t so sure, and we took 3 days and we fasted and we prayed and we said, ‘Lord. Is this what you want? Is this your will?’ and after long about the afternoon of day two, he made that calling sure. And its been now 22 months that I’ve been running for United States Congress. Who in their right mind would spend 2 years to run for a job that lasts 2 years? You’d have to be absolutely a fool to do that. You are now looking at a fool for Christ. This is a fool for Christ.

If she looks to the Lord with that expression on her face she’s going to scare the crap out of her/him.

OMFG!

Since G-d called her to run for for Congress in 2006, why did she need to campaign?

I’m wondering if G-d also told her to accept farm subsidies?

Why do you call this site Minnesota Independent when it’s so obvious this is just another liberal rag. I mean seriously, who decided to use that exact picture of Bachmann for this article? Do you ever go frame by frame through democratic party politician’s vids to get pictures of them in mid-sentence like this or is it just Bachmann?

I think you should change the name of this site to the Minnesota Hate Monger and Rating Whore.

Yes, Matt, because any reputable news outlet would only put up attractive photos of Rep. Bachmann, and would never print anything she actually said or did that makes that picture seem only 1/10 as crazy.

So, what’s the point of this article? To ridicule someone’s religious beliefs? Do you think Michele Bachmann or even republicans are the only politicians with religious beliefs?

Keith Ellison is such a devout muslim that he went on haji … twice! (of course, someone else (MB) paid for his trips, but nonetheless).

Why aren’t there any quotes in the press from Ellison about how important his faith is to him and how he prays to allah for guidance five times a day?

That’s “right” Michele…

The world was created six thousand years ago, Noah collected two of every animal in the world and fit them into a ship of his own making, Jesus walked on water and you’re the best person to oversee the Department of Education. After all, your beliefs must become our facts through evangelism, yes? ROTFLMAO!

Dennis said: “Why aren’t there any quotes in the press from Ellison about how important his faith is to him and how he prays to allah for guidance five times a day?”

Let’s assume everything you say in that statement is true. I have no idea if it is and I don’t care if it is true because Ellison doesn’t throw his faith IN OUR FACE 24/7 like Bachmann does. If one were to believe everything Bachmann says on the subject, she has a direct link to God and because of that link everything she does has the blessing of God himself and therefore has to be right.

Ellison keeps his faith and his religious beliefs to himself as much as the Conservative maniacs will allow him to That’s exactly what any person in any elected office should do. Religion has no place in politics or legislating public policy.

Selective memory, Dennis? We’ve covered Ellison’s faith and how he’s acknowledged the example of Christ in his own upbringing. Of course, you know that.

Carl: Let’s face it. The reason you don’t ridicule Ellison’s muslim faith is because muslims kill people who ridicule them. They even kill people who have the temerity to display a drawing of muHAMid. You know, the guy who Ellison believes moved a mountain?

Robert,

I’m sure a brilliant fellow like yourself is aware our country was founded because of religious persecution, and the founding fathers made it clear of separation of church and state, but I forgot, you idiots only rely on the constitution when it’s convenient for you.

@ Dennis, simply stating what a person does in the name of religion is not a put down, its simply reporting on the matter, if you personally think its a joke how Michelle conducts her life, I do understand that, because I too think she is a joke.

As for the “his god moved a mountain” your God, created world wide floods, plagues and promotes genocide. Along with right out murder, rape and slavery.

In the mean time it’s the American Taliban that poses the most immediate threat to reason and Democracy. Thank you for always being their poster child.

Hmmm. Look to the Lord for my decision. Why not just swing a dead cat over your head to decide what car to buy. If you have voices in your head telling you what to do you have deeper issues to deal with.

Bachmann (from the article):

“God then called me to run for the United States Congress, and I thought ‘What in the world will that be for?’ and my husband said ‘You need to do this,’ and I wasn’t so sure, and we took 3 days and we fasted and we prayed and we said, ‘Lord. Is this what you want? Is this your will?’ and after long about the afternoon of day two, he made that calling sure.”

What disturbs me about this is the Bachmann’s assumption she has a direct line to her god. There’s no qualifying doubt here, no indication of modesty when making such a claim.

A problem is that most fervent faithful have this belief, which leads to contradiction: what happens when faithful servant of the Lord A is instructed by the Lord to do/believe X, at the same time faithful servant of the Lord B is instructed by the Lord to do/believe not-X?

Based on Bachmann’s public statements it’s reasonable to assume that she bases policy decisions on her magical belief that she’s communicating with the alleged creator of the universe.

In actuality what’s going on with Bachmann is a kind of psychological projection combined with confirmation bias of vague “evidence.” She’s directing prayers to her own consciousness, which primes her to believe that vague data in the environment will present her with a “sign” about what to do. This data is by definition ambiguous and vaporous, but with the “eyes of faith”, i.e., semi-conscious pattern-seeking that confirms semi-conscious self-beliefs, it is made “clear.”

If this description is accurate, it’s a disturbing portrait of Bachmann’s mind: alienated and unknown to itself and therefore open to confusions of cause and effect, and delusions about the nature of reality and the actual basis of judgment.

But, sadly, Bachmann is probably at the level of many people in this state, country and world. This raises questions about the viability of democracy when many citizens inwardly live partly in reality and partly in religious fantasy.

Dennis,

Christians are all over the map in terms of their beliefs and values. Some Christians are racists, others anti-racist. Some support gay marriage, others are opposed. Some Christians are thoughtful and generous, others are intolerant assholes. Revelation: they’re just like everyone else.

Bachmann faces criticism for her religious beliefs because those beliefs often defy reason and evidence in obvious ways. For instance, she supports creationism–a religious doctrine often supported by conservative Christians, but rejected by virtually all scientists who aren’t themselves Christian evangelicals or fundamentalists.

You’ve also got your history wrong. It was liberals and leftists who were supportive of M.L. King. Conservatives at the time typically hated him and the civil rights movement. This is elementary history–look it up.

Is it just me or does she have those “crazy eyes”? I mean she looks like she’s just a Twinkie away from becoming a serial killer.

“no religious Test shall ever be required as a Qualification to any Office or public Trust under the United States.”
Article VI, U. S. Constitution.

Oh, wait. she wasn’t there when they read the Constitution. She must have slept through her own class as well.

If she cannot make a decision on her own, why should she be allowed to make decisions for others?

Her loyalties are to religion and that little voice in her head that she thinks is God, and corporations – not the actual living, breathing citizens of this country she seems to despise. She is the antithesis of a patriot. She is what I call a fifth-column republican.
