Carlson apologizes for pay equity repeal, pulls bill

Three bills with the same intent remain

Sen. John Carlson, R-Bemidji, apologized on Saturday for authoring legislation that would repeal the Pay Equity Act, a 1980s law that ensures male and female public employees earn the same wages for the same jobs. The Minnesota Independent first reported that the bill contained the repeal, hidden among dozens of other local government mandate repeals.

“That bill’s been pulled and it won’t see the light of day,” Carlson said Saturday at an Education Minnesota event, the Bemidji Pioneer reports. “I would admit I didn’t do my homework very well.”

“So I author the bill, put it in the hopper, and the next thing I know, all hell breaks loose,” he said. “And I deserve it for being naïve. Quite honestly, I deserve that. I did it with good intentions.”

“Obviously, I’ve been married for 32 years, I have a daughter out in the workforce, and I have a granddaughter — I can’t believe anyone would think I would harm that relationship,” Carlson said.

While Carlson said he’s pulled the bill, there are still three other similar bills sitting in the Minnesota Legislature awaiting hearings: an identical House companion bill and two other standalone bills that take direct aim at the Pay Equity Act.

Well, it’s nice to see he pulled the bill, but OMG! How dumb is this guy? Everyone else immediately saw what the bill would do and he didn’t? Who wrote the friggin thing? An intern and he simply slapped his name on the thing?

GOP = dumb, dumb, dumb and very un American (God is NOT on their side)

Make no mistake, republicans are waging a war on women all around the country. He’s sorry it got so much attention, not sorry for trying.

Exactly, Kevin – I think “authored” means the Chamber of Commerce gave it to him to submit. After he submitted to them, apparently.

Like Dave and Kevin, the Gillette Torvik Blog speculates that the senator did not author the bill.

Whether Carlson wrote [authored] the bill doesn’t appear to be the primary issue. He didn’t read it prior to presenting it.

“So I author the bill…”

How does one author a bill and not know what’s in it? How bad must it be that he would rather admit to being a fool then to tell the truth of this bill’s origin?

I’m semi-not-impressed with his apology. I will be impressed if he works to get the remaining bills repealed. Will give him the benefit of the (duh!? – uninformed) doubt. Won’t give that benefit to remaining bills

It remains to be seen whether Mr. Carlson would work hard to persuade his peers to withdraw the three remaining bills as well as how he votes on them if they ever get to the floor. We are watching!

This demonstrates a frightening lack of curiosity for the consequences of legislation. This is not a homework fail, it is not naivety, it is fundamental irresponsibility and disrespect for the office he holds.

Just what we have come to expect from republicans.

Lets take it for face value, He didn’t read it. It had the republican buzz words on, and who ever gave it to him was partisan. The only thing that counts to the republicans is to divide and conquer there is no we are the people.

@Jeff, yes, right now there is obviously a war on women. I think its a political move for more power.

Personally, I’m guessing the withdraw is a result of some form of “Mama spank”. Like that US congressman who got a telegram from Ma telling him to vote for women’s suffrage or don’t come home again.

This will not see the light of day? With three other bills in the works? Don’t be fooled, Republicans are moving items in and out of bills so fast that most of us can’t keep up. If you write to your representative about one bill, don’t be suprised if they say that that issue isn’t in the bill any more. That’s because it’s been moved to another bill. They are either very inept, very disorganized, or very disingenous. I wonder which.

I’ve been married for 32 years, I have a daughter out in the workforce, and I have a granddaughter — I can’t believe anyone would think I would harm that relationship,” Carlson said.

Why is it that Republicans only support rights for people if it touches them personally?

Otherwise, they’re all for killing pay nondiscrimination based on gender, defunding government, stripping the poor of medical coverage, stripping public employees of compensation, benefits, and rights …. the list is endless, including the on-going hostility toward the gay community.

Jessie Helms was a perfect example. Hated everybody and everything … but worked with Senator Wellstone (rip) on disabilities issues because it was something personal in his family.
