Minnesota Democrats vow to fight anti-gay marriage amendment
Monday, March 07, 2011 at 8:58 am
In its DFL Dispatch — an email update to party activists — Minnesota DFL chair Ken Martin said last week that the party will fight to stop a constitutional amendment banning gay marriage from passing in Minnesota. Some LGBT activists had been pressuring the party to make a bold statement in its communications about the issue. In the email, Martin said, “We will work hard to ensure that the GOP is not successful in their quest to write discrimination into our state constitution.”
A Change.org petition was created that urged the party to to get engaged in fighting a constitutional amendment, something the GOP has hinted they have planned for 2012.
“Please be clear about where the DFL Party stands on LGBT equality,” the petition asked. “Please express your concerns about the looming dangers to LGBT equality in Minnesota. Please call all DFLer’s in MN to become concerned and active for the equal rights of LGBT Minnesotan’s.”
Ken Martin, who was recently elected chair of the DFL, responded. Here’s the relevant part of the DFL Dispatch:
But we also have a lot of tough battles coming up—and not just to get our candidates elected. With the Republican majorities in the legislature, it’s very likely that the GOP will drive their partisan agenda next year by putting constitutional amendments on the ballot. And while Governor Dayton can stop any extreme bills that come to his desk, the right-wing majority can use constitutional amendments on the ballot to circumvent his veto pen. That means there’s a real looming danger for many Minnesotans – especially those in the LGBT community.
Let me be clear: the DFL Party has and always will be the Party that stands for equal rights. And we will work hard to ensure that the GOP is not successful in their quest to write discrimination into our state constitution.
We are the party that supports equality and fairness. We believe that every person in Minnesota should have the ability to marry the person they love. We believe every student should be safe at school, and have a healthy, respectful learning environment free of harassment and violence. We believe in ending discrimination based on sexual orientation (and also based on gender, race, religion, disability and any other perceived or actual characteristic). And we will fight to make sure that any GOP efforts to outlaw gay marriage through a constitutional amendment will be voted down in 2012.

Speaking of separation of Church and State, how can C-Street manage to carry out their own version of violent foreign policy in countries with which the US has diplomatic relations? Isn’t C-Street violating the Constitution? I mean, besides being fundamentally undemocratic and eerily anti-Christ-like in their behavior? Why do American people of faith allow so called Christians to behave in ways diametrically opposed to the teachings of Christ while claiming to represent Christianity? Just say no to the American Taliban.
Praise Jebus, God hates Jesus, Amen.

regarding c-street. People have used the name of religion to front their personal political agenda since the beginning of religion. People are afraid to stand up against groups with the tag of the name of their religion in fear of being on the “other side” what ever side that might be.
You can call yourself a duck, but if you don’t quck, and have feathers, your not a duck.

@Carl –
You are a God hater, an anti-Christ, because you do not believe in Jesus the Son of God. Therefore, why are you speaking for Christains?
Scripture clearly tells how to test this.
1 John 4:1 “Dear friends, do not believe every spirit, but test the spirits to see whether they are from God, because many false prophets have gone out into the world.”
1 John 4:2-3 2 “This is how you can recognize the Spirit of God: Every spirit that acknowledges that Jesus Christ has come in the flesh is from God, but every spirit that does not acknowledge Jesus is not from God. This is the spirit of the antichrist, which you have heard is coming and even now is already in the world.”
Jesus say that we either gather people to Him or away from Him. You are clearly not gathering people to Him, therefore you are part of the anti-Christ movement spoken about in Matthew 24 – “and many false prophets will appear and deceive many people.”

Well since the Rapture is coming May 21st we don’t have to worry about this. ;-)
Actually I won’t be surprised if they seriously try to get a constitutional amendment passed banning same-sex marriage, Sadly I’ll be even less surprised if they succeed, though like Prohibition I think it will be over turned eventually. DFL or GOP, a politician votes based on money and what they think will get them re-elected and not on what is best for state or country.

Tim,
Wow, cheap insults so early in the day.
You need to accept the fact that there are people that consider your “God” to be as fictional as Zeus, the Easter Bunny and Garfield the Cat.
Speaking towards the story, I’m not surprised that the GOP would try to get an amendment in while they have the majority. It’s too bad they feel the need to make our state Constitution discriminate against a minority.

Well, I hope that the Minnesota GOP does the right thing and puts this to a vote. It’s clearly a topical item that must be dealt with. I for one oppose same-sex marriage.

@Tim, to add to Scott’s ideas, not only is Your God “fictional” to some, but your brand of Christianity is not aligned with the majority of people that self brand themselves as Christians.

@Steve
Put it up to a vote? As a woman, I am glad that wasn’t the case when we finally got the vote!
As for anyone of color, should agree that putting it up to a vote is wrong. As anyone who is religious should also agree.
For its the right for you to not support a same sex couple or marriage, its not your right to not accept it.

Steve,
What other civil rights should we vote on? Which religion to make the “official” state religion? what groups people can form?
Civil rights should not be voted on at all! Majorities do not get to decide what rights a minority get.

From a conservative, financial side of it.
there isn’t any beef about same sex marriage, there is only one from a religious side, and that can not determine OUR LAWS!
Take Obama as an example, he does not support from a religious stand point of same sex marriage. But as a citizen of the USA is knows full heartily that he needs to accept it, therefore supporting the change that is at this point unconstitutional in how we are conducting ourselves.

I was expecting this. We all knew it would come.
At this point in time, I’m not sure how Minnesotans would vote on such an amendment, however I think an awful lot of folk are already experiencing GOP burnout, so this could work in favor of such an amendment being shot down.
Both nationally and in MN, the GOP came into power on a platform of jobs, jobs, jobs, economy, economy, economy and have delivered squat to date. This is not the time to take on yet one more major social issue. People are getting really tired of this crap.

Hi,
A gay friend of mine was married a couple years back to his partner. I just don’t see the big deal? It was just as boring as any other wedding party I have attended.
So everyone had to fight for Indians rights then we have a civil war to free people from slavery then its womans rights then its civil rights now we have to fight for gay rights.
So you look at the constitution All men/women are created equal…… Yet we have to keep on fighting against religeous zealots each and every time.
The fact that this election the GOP is really throwing out the gawd thing instead of patriots like they did the last two elections. If you don’t see it our way you are not a patriot, if you don’t see it our way your a satanist.
I really wish the majority would learn that politicians are just playing your emotional strings for votes so they can gain fame power and money. I am not the smartest person in the world and I can see this. Why can’t everyone else?
@Tim,
Bad Tim! Really bad, Doesn’t even make sense.

Last night the Goddess spoke to me in a dream, telling me that Tim would post on an article about same-sex marriage, and how right She was! Praise be the Goddess!

I suppose we could outlaw divorce in the same amendment and see how many people want to vote away people’s civil rights. This whole thing is a waste of time and a political ploy to gather votes from religious bigots for Republicans. No citizen should have any fewer or more rights under civil law than any other citizen… that is not up for a vote it is our very way of government.
Keep your religion out of our civil laws. You have no right to try and make others follow your religion. Even the Bible says don’t mix religion with government.

Didn’t we kind of establish Tim might not really be Tim, but another name that starts with “T” of that other infamous, MN group claiming to represent families? Just sayin……

I appreciate Ken Martin’s remarks, but I will be more impressed when he speaks out against DFL candidates who oppose the party platform. Martin says that the party believes in “ending discrimination based on sexual orientation (and also based on gender, race, religion, disability and any other perceived or actual characteristic),” yet it continues to support anti-abortion AND anti-same sex marriage Rep. Collin Peterson. This March 3 piece by Sarah Jaffe of RH Reality Check is very enlightening, and ought to make anyone who gave money to the Democrats furious: (http://www.rhrealitycheck.org/blog/2011/03/02/meet-collin-peterson)
Peterson voted against the Don’t Ask Don’t Tell repeal and supported the Federal Marriage Amendment. Does this sound like a Minnesota Democrat who supports LGBT rights? Didn’t think so.
The DFL wants to have it both ways–looking like an ally of social justice causes (especially to voters in the metro) while spending time and money on the re-election of a conservative. Until Martin denounces Peterson, he’ll get no money or votes from me.

American Christian Fundamentalism… Spreading the word of God through the force of human law. After all nothing says Jesus loves you like homophobic civil rights suppression.

If Tim is the other famous T, then Dennis is either a collective group (and I use that word with all pun intended) or the infamous C.D, of said same group.
Which would be funny, because they have censored their facebook page and are not allowing all people to post anymore.

What ever Tim and Dennis are, they are not real. No one is that ignorant, even West Virginians. I picture the sky a bright fuchsia in their world.

Tim,
If Jesus still exists, I’m sure he’d forgive you for your hateful attitude towards GLBT people. I can see it now…
Dressed in skin snake textured leather pants and a skin-tight black top, Jesus gets up from a couch. Next to him is a man in a white shirt, which is unbuttoned down the pants. Two empty wine bottles sit on the side table.
Jesus: Tim, my son, you are on the wrong path. Love is not to be horded like the rich man does money, but spread to all who need it.
Tim: Satan, leave my presence!
Jesus: Judge not, lest ye be judged! Yes, I lied with a man. And my Father blessed me. You have heard that lying with another man is a road to the pit. I tell you that lying with a man is the path to bliss and everlasting life.
Tim: Holy Jesus, protect me from…
Jesus: I’m right here Tim. Tim?….Tim?
