Bachmann: ‘I am an Iowan’
Tuesday, March 29, 2011 at 12:45 pm
Rep. Michele Bachmann took Iowa by storm last week, making a series of media appearances and fundraising events and hitting on a common theme: “I am an Iowan.” She talked about taking Iowa’s money back home from the feds, about bringing jobs to Iowa and protecting Iowa’s quality public schools from the Department of Education. The district she represents north of the Twin Cities or the state in which it is contained went largely unmentioned over the course of the week.
KTIA radio on Thursday, she said, “I just want to mention for your listeners sake that I’m actually an Iowan by birth. I was born in Waterloo, Iowa, and I lived here for the first 12 years of my life. I’m actually a 7th generation Iowan.”
In an interview with Fox’s Greta Van Susteran on Thursday, she shared her Iowa roots.
“When I grew up here in Iowa — I am an Iowan, as a matter of fact, I’m a 7th generation Iowan — when I grew up in Iowa our family was Democrat. We were reasonable people we had Democrats in our family, Republicans in our family.”
On WHO radio with Jan Mickelson, she said she wanted to make sure Iowa didn’t implement “Obamacare.”
“Congressman [Steve] King and I aren’t giving up [on defunding the Affordable Care Act]. We are tough Iowegians. We need to make sure here in Iowa that the Iowa Legislature doesn’t put into place these new exchanges.”
In a YouTube interview with blogger Shane Vander Hart on Thursday, Bachmann touted the great public education system in Iowa and vowed to protect it from the federal government.
“I am an Iowan. I was born here. I’m a 7 generation Iowan. I was born in Waterloo, but we need to make that decision [to run for president] I think sometime this summer,” she said.
“I attended great public schools in Iowa when I first started my education. I was here for kindergarten through 6th grade,” she said. “They were great public schools because they were locally controlled. I would prefer to see the federal education department abolished and instead see parents and states keep the money.”
At Rep. King’s Conservative Principles Conference on Saturday, Bachmann said that she hopes to start job growth in Iowa.
“I was born here in Iowa almost 55 years ago to the week, and I am a seventh-generation Iowan,” she said. “Iowa is the land of milk and honey.”
She added, “We want the United States to be the best place for job creation in the world, and we can be. We need to cut taxes so that we can have jobs here in the United States, beginning with Iowa. They’ve got Iowa’s money in Washington, DC. Let’s bring it home!”
Bachmann will be back in Iowa in two weeks when she will speak at the Family Leader in Iowa City on April 11.
In the latest edition of the Iowa Independent‘s presidential Power Rankings, Bachmann was seen by pundits and scholars to be gaining ground on Mike Huckabee in the Hawekeye State.

If we destroy the middle class, make sure the wealthy get even richer, slash wages, put corporate interests first and sell our souls to the devil. Then there will be lots of jobs – minimum wage jobs, but jobs. Let’s make sure this is the best 3rd world nation in the world!

To be fair, she does spend more time there than in Minnesota.

I came across this Iowegian joke elsewhere:
A Norwegian, a Swede and a Dane made a bet about who could stay the longest in a stinky pig barn near Waterloo, Iowa. They all went in at the same time. After only two minutes, the Swede came running out. Five minutes later, the Dane stumbled out the door. After ten minutes, all the pigs ran out.

Are the Democrats THAT WEAK in MN`s 6th district that they can`t find someone to beat that joy-rider and dim bulb?

ROTFL! I`ve heard variations of this joke, with a Frenchman substituted for the Norweigian. Which reminds me, Michelle Bachmann looks French to me. Wasn`t she going to show us her birth certificate?

Do not denigrate Iowa just because it is home to a few pigs.

Ray, it appears that Walking Eagle has finally been banned. Tack och lov!
As for Mel Dahl vs the US Navy, I came across the August 19, 1993 court decision and order for reinstatement at http://dont.stanford.edu/cases/dahl.pdf. I sense potential in this becoming a novel / movie based on a true story …

She thinks she’s the seventh son of a seventh son or something.
I hope she does not represent Iowa’s Waterloo.

I was born in Iowa but spent almost fifteen years in MN—a state that I love and visit often. I cringed when I found out that MB was born in Waterloo—my place of birth. I went to private schools so I can’t speak to the public education in Waterloo but I would love to know how MB grew to be so extreme in her political and religious beliefs. Yes, IA has some folks who are like MB but take a look at who boosted Obama’s presidential campaign—it was good ol’ Iowa.
Is anyone at the MN Independent writing a biography on MB?

Except that it wasn`t the oogedy-boogedy voters of Iowa who got Obama going. THEY don`t vote in the Democratic caucus, but they will almost certainly voter for MB if Palin and Huckabee stay home.

Hey Michelle–the public schools you went to were also “great” because taxpayers were willing to pay for them. If the Tea Party had been in charge when you were attending, I truly doubt the schools would have been “great”. Spartan perhaps, but not great. You should not forget that lesson.

Ish. That pretty much sums it up. I am not Iowan… but I know if i was I would be rather po’d to have that rattle trap running her mouth stating that she really is an Iowan. I don’t believe in passing the buck.. but that’s one buck i’d pass if they want her!

Hmmm– seems Michele Bachmann has carefully retouched her background. She is NOT a 7th generation Iowan, and her roots are in -Wisconsin-, not Iowa!
See http://www.huffingtonpost.com/chris-rodda/michele-bachmann-lies-abo_b_844215.html
And she now claims she grew up in Cedar Falls, IA. But when she ran for the 6th Dist in MN, she claimed she grew up in Anoka, MN. Wow, talk about a split-personality!

M.B. dont even know where she went to the bathroom last . How can we expect her to remember where shs was born . Personally I hope she does run for the White House , that would insure that President Oboma would get back in . She dont like our Constitution , and wants it to change . I say if you dont like the way we do things here , move to China , run for election there , they already pooped on Democracy there .

In fact, the USA needs you as much as a fish needs a bicycle!

@Lou Sarah: We tried very, very hard with Tarryl Clark. Unfortunately, Bachmann has far more financial support to throw into her campaign, because of her national reputation. If you want to see her gone, I’m sure Clark could use the support– she’s declared that she’ll take on Bachmann again in 2012.
