Kiffmeyer wants voter ID on the ballot in 2012
Friday, April 15, 2011 at 9:18 am
Rep. Mary Kiffmeyer, R-Big Lake, told Minnesota Public Radio on Thursday that if Gov. Mark Dayton vetoes a controversial voter ID bill, she will seek to put it on the ballot in 2012. The bill, which is currently winding its way through the Legislature, would require photo ID of all voters. Dayton hasn’t indicated whether he’ll veto such a measure, but election integrity advocates say the proposal could run into constitutional problems.
“We’re going to keep working with Gov. Dayton and continue to do that but if we have to at the end, that is probably a back-up option because this is something that the voters do want,” Kiffmeyer told MPR. “So if we need to, we’ll take it to the voters.”
Pro-voter ID groups had already threatened to advance a constitutional amendment last November following the defeat of Republican gubernatorial candidate Tom Emmer, a strong supporter of the measure.
But, Minnesota Common Cause noted that the current bill would not spend enough on voter education to ensure that all voters know they need an ID at the polls:
A revised estimate of the costs, savings, revenue gains, and losses projected for Minnesota’s voter ID bill, SF509, fails to adequately account for the costs of the legislation required by the courts. If the legislation is to be constitutional, the estimate–called a fiscal note–must include additional costs for public education and providing the free ID to individuals.
The courts have repeatedly required that states adopt expensive measures to mitigate the burdensome effects that voter ID mandates have on seniors, students and the poor. If legislators fail to account for these costs, this legislation will be held unconstitutional by the courts.
Common Cause estimates that voter education will cost $19.48 million, while Kiffmeyer estimates $2.7 million.

one of the few things that i support from my Representative
if you don’t have some form of id then don’t vote
i always thought that you needed to anyways
i am sure most voters agree
if your importance of voting and you take it serious
then you can abide with a form of proof of resident
it is a non issue
lets spend some more money on barry bonds and steroids now there is a issue
shame shame
no one wants to put their faces in front of big issues

I disagree. There are many people who do not have nor use id’s.

What about college students? They can legally vote in their college town, so will they accept college ID’s? Their hometown drivers license won’t allow them to vote in their college town.
What are the acceptable forms of id?
Comment posted April 15, 2011 @ 11:51 am
for instance a college person who has a college id who can vote in the district
then go home and vote again
and then vote in their residence
THATS WRONG
ONE VOTE ONE ORSON
and if you don’t have a valid tax statement , drivers license, state id and many others
one person one vote
i hold voting as one of our most sacred privileges, and if you cant prove residency
then no vote for you
sorry but that’s how i see it
there are many ways to prove you are from a district
and there is so much voter fraud
in fact i believe if you don’t know the issues you cant vote ]
we the little people then have no vote at all
i believe voting is a privilege,,,,,, not a right ,,,,,,,, but that’s just me , just me
Comment posted April 15, 2011 @ 12:20 pm
It is a right. With voter ID it becomes a privilege and those that cannot vote will not be represented.
Also voting is not always about the issues. Any dumbass can tell when someone is not telling the truth.
At one time they did have tests before voting. It was a subtle way to keep blacks from voting. That was finally abolished.
Voter fraud is a another story made up by wingnuts because they have no idea how to create jobs and or improve the economy.

THIS IS REALLY A BAD IDEA
BUT IF YOU VOTE YOU GET A 50 DOLLAR VOUCHER
AS YOU SPEND AS YOU PLEASE FOR VOTING
IT WOULD HELP THE ECONMY
IT WOULD GIVE HUGE VOTER TURN OUT
AND I BELIEVE IT WOULD HELP PEOPLE WHO DONT VOTE
TURN OUT AND VOTE FOR THEIR CANDIDATE
IT WOULD SURLY TURN VOTERS HEADS ,AND CREATE MINORITY VOTING
NOT ETHNIC BUT MINORITY VOTING [ PEOPLE WHO JUST DON'T VOTE WHO HAVE A CANDIDATE BUT JUST DON'T VOTE ]
INSTEAD OF BILLIONS OF DOLLARS IN VOTER SURVEYS AND JUNK MAIL
WHICH JUST GO TO THE CIRCLE FILE, GARBAGE

Other than not being persuaded that voter ID will solve any problems (on the contrary, I think it will cause more problems including disenfranchising groups of voters; what about those who vote absentee?), I predict many, many, many constitutional amendments on the 2012 ballot on account of Governor Dayton having to veto many, many, many bad pieces of legislation that the Republicans are ramming through before they lose power next year on account of their very destructive agendas. And I refuse to dignify this disgrace with an UFF DA!

MM, voter id is not what it is cracked up to be. First what are folks going to do when they get turned away for not looking like their photo? Also if people think it’s going to prevent fraud have forgotten what happens in bars. Lots of kids have fake photo id’s and they still get in. Now try to get some 75 year old election judge trained to know the difference between good and fake id’s. Good luck when the liquor industry have been fighting this problem for years.

Allocate at least 10% of any money given “Voter ID” to detection and prosecution of snowbirds voting in more than one state – and you’ll get more than ten times the results.
Almost all of these people will be Republicans, of course. And they will howl and
scream at how their own petard has hoisted them so high.
Admit Puerto Rico as a State, and gain two Dem Senators and at least 20 Dem Representatives. Not that this will ever happen, since “Not only are they liberal -
they’re brown!”

This all amounts to Voter supression.
When as Sec. of State, Mary Kiffmeyer tried to get Same Day Registration abolished. She felt that those who registered the same day as Election Day, were not true Minnesota residents under the law and tended to vote for Democrats.
As an Election Judge since 2006, I have registered many same day voters and followed State laws. Voters presented an ID showing that they were who they said they were. They had Cable, Utility, and other bills establishing residency in the correct precient. They knew before signing the Votr registration card that all information was CORRECT or face penalties under Federal Law.
Voters in Minnesota are honest. There are a few bad apples. But those bad apples should not spoil it for the entire bushel. Which is what the MNGOP is trying to do in their demand that Voters present ID in order to get a ballot. Presenting an ID should be VOLUNTARY!

OH NO I AM WRONG ,,WRONG WRONG
I MISSED THE PICTURE ID PART
JUST SOME PROOF OF WHERE YOU LIVE
ALSO
MY POINT IS ALL THESE SMALL PRECINCTS COULD TAKE A STACK OF VOTER
APPLICATIONS ,,SIGN ANOTHER PERSONS NAME ,VOTE OVER AND OVER AGAIN
BY FORGING NAMES OF PEOPLE WHO NEVER INTEND TO VOTE IN THE FIRST PLACE ,
JUST CHECKING IF YOU ARE IN THE DISTRICT ,SIGN YOUR NAME, ON THE SPREAD SHEET
YOU ARE HANDED A BALLOT ,YOU THEN CAN VOTE
WHAT IS STOPPING A PERSON [ELECTION VOLUNTEER] FROM TAKING A STACK
AND SIGNING NAMES AND THEN VOTING SEVERAL TIMES OVER
OR
WHAT I THINK I SAW ONE TIME
IS A PERSON SAID THIS IS FOR ME AND THIS IS FOR MY ELDERLY MOM SHE THEN SINGED TWICE ,AND WAS HANDED TWO BALLOTS
WE LIVE IN A VERY SMALL PRECINCT
THAT’S PART OF WHAT I AM TALKING ABOUT ,
I WOULD LOVE TO SEE,, A DO NOT CALL OR SEND ME POLITICAL JUNK IN THE MAIL
OR A GENERIC 25 QUESTION SURVEY OF THE CANDIDATE VIEWS AND THEY MUST STICK TO THAT OR COULD BE FIRED
YES ,,I KNOW ITS IMPOSSIBLE, BUT WHEN YOU VOTE BECAUSE THEY SAY THEY ARE GOING TO SUPPORT SOMETHING, AND THEN DO THE OPPOSITE
LANE WHY ARE YOU NOT IN THE ARENA ,YOU WOULD GET MY VOTE

Hey Ray – all caps doesn’t help your argument get across. It’s like yelling, thinking that people will listen harder if you yell real loud. What actually happens, is people avert their eyes and look for someone more reasonable.
Of course Homer – this philosopher guy from more than two thousand years ago – was against written language. He thought it would make foolish statements seem more plausible, and make the writer look like he knew what he was talking about even when he didn’t. Maybe Homer was right. I don’t know. But I do know “ALL CAPS” doesn’t work very well.

TRY TO PUT UP WITH IT
I AM NOT TRYING TO BE THE NEXT POLITICAL SCHOLAR OR TRYING TO IMPRESS ANYONE
ITS VERY HARD FOR ME TO WRITE ,BECAUSE OF A NERVE DISORDER
BUT I WOULD LIKE TO JOIN IN CERTAIN DEBATES
I THINK I KNOW WHAT I AM TALKING ABOUT BUT BECAUSE OF A MILITARY SITUATION
IT IS HARD TO GET MY MIND TO SPEAK WHAT I AM TRYING TO SAY
I AM SORRY
THE SAD THING I THINK IS ,I ADMITTED I WAS WRONG IN THE UNDERSTANDING

Ray, thanks for letting Dave know. As a man who is Deaf, I sometimes am accused of ignoring the person when in fact, I didn’t know the person was talking to me probably starting to yell out of growing exasperation … Just carry on. We’ll know from the tone of your comment if you cross the line …
BTW, thank you for your vote of confidence, Ray. I express myself best in writing as it gives me time to reflect on what I want to say – unlike some people who can think on their feet. Besides, I don’t have the right temperament to live and breath politics given the field nowadays is so rife with connivers and assholes.

Ray, I come from a small precinct and have been an election judge, not 70′s but in my 50′s. Your comments regarding voter fraud by election volunteers is very, very insulting. We are trained and take oaths of office and work from 6 am until all the votes are counted. We take pride in serving our communities and state. If you think your election judges or anyone else is committing fraud, you should tell someone, especially if you are an eye witness. Not to do so condones the fraud. But please do not spread rumors and lies based on “what I think I saw”. That is just wrong.

Wow ray, your arguments are all over the place. Try to stick to the point if you can.
The veil that you and Kiffmeyer are throwing over the real issue is that the citizens are corrupt and we can not trust them to vote honestly. That is what voter fraud people are claiming. Your claim that the government is corrupt has NOTHING to do with voter id’s.
The real issue here though, is that people that advocate for voter restrictions want to eliminate a group of US CITIZENS from voting. The republicans know that they are a political party in the throes of death. They either need a complete transfusion of ideology or they need to eliminate groups of citizens that historically vote against them.
Voter id’s are equal to either class warfare or racism.

BUT LETS STICK TO VOTING AS IN KIPMEYERS DISTRICT

Well ray, if you truly had evidence, I am sure the Attorney Generals office would love to see it so they can investigate and prosecute as needed. You sitting here in your pj’s claiming corruption at all levels of our society and doing nothing about it is paramount to condoning the corruption. If you do not have actual evidence to provide then hush up on the claims.
On a similar note, I am sure that corruption does purvey our governmental system. The issues I have, though, is not with voter id fraud. The sheer number of US citizens voting legaly will cancel out the illegal votes.
The corruption that needs to be done away with is the legal type…We need to do away with cloaked campaign contributions. The Koch brothers should not be allowed to give more money than what I can give.
Have a nice day and enjoy the snow. I got better things to do.

What scares me the most is what’s to stop a political party or politian from just making and selling fake IDs and then paying people to vote over and over again.
Lets see, 100 people voting 10 times each is 1000 votes. Say you pay them $100 a vote, so that’s a mere $10,000 for 1000 votes. Sounds incrediblly cheap compared to the millions that are already paid for advertising and marketing.
I hope you all know that there are hundreds of illegal imigrants, who have perfectly valid drivers licenses as well as fake licenses. Talk to a cop about how good some of the fake ID’s are, you would be suprised how good they are and just how hard it is to tell a fake from real.

Mere mention of how horrid we look in the picture on our driver’s licenses should bring perspective into how ridiculous this voter-ID hoopla is! Horrid pictures will not eliminate deliberate voter fraud. Plain and simple. Sheesh.

I believe Minnesotans should have every confidence in the integrity of the election system here. I have been an election judge and I can say that the process is clean, open and robustly fair. There has been a great deal of consideration given to making certain that you are the person you claim to be when you get your ballot. I encourage everyone who is interested–or dubious–to be an election judge and better understand the mechanisms by which we vote.
In doing so you will find out that practically all talk of voter fraud is fabrication and fantasy–it doesn’t or can’t occur. About 1 in 50000 votes in Minnesota in 2008 were found to be by ineligible voters. That is a very small number. Nearly all of of these were people recently out of prison who didn’t know their civil rights. One way to fix this would be to change the law so that those no longer incarcerated but on parole or probation can vote. Problem solved.
People who cast doubt on the integrity of our elections are simply wrong, or they are playing with fire. Or fear. The irony is that the net effect of voter ID laws is disenfranchisement of legal voters. To me, that is scary.

So the GOP elected as House Speaker someone that didn’t know voting is a right. Is Speaker Zellers a graduate of Michele Bachmann’s Constitution classes? If not the Peter Principle is alive and well.
Praise Jebus, God hates competent leadership, Amen.
